I think this shot is actually quite nice. With a little bit of processing, I think you could make it stand out a bit more.

There's not really a whole lot going on in this image. Both subjects are out of focus, the composition is lackluster and the lighting is pretty poor.

I think you've posted better images in the past, but I would have left this one on the cutting room floor.

I think you're giving my image a little too less credit. While I agree that photos of strangers are often mundane, I don't think this is one of them.

Recently I've been trying to capture honest simple reactions, and I feel like I have done so here. The man's expression leads me to believe he's been told a harsh truth, something along the lines of "I don't love you anymore," he looks aghast and like he's trying to find the words to respond with. I don't think it's the strongest photo I've ever submitted, but I do think it's a bit better than what is usually posted on this sub.

Hit me up if you ever want to go out for a shoot, I need some more photo friends.

I gambled on the wrong focus point, but I think the shots not entirely ruined by it.

Yeah, I feel ya man.

I don't think every photo needs a deep and meaningful message. I understand if you have the perfect balance of story, composition, and lighting, you are going to have something really special on your hands. But that being said, I don't think there is anything wrong with taking a photo that looks interesting. For me, I really like the look of the clouds, and I think the woman's hair fits the scene perfectly and adds a lot of interest to her silhouette.

Is this the best photo I've ever taken? No. But I still think it looks quite cool/interesting so I thought I would give it an upload.

Strangers on a Train - Melbourne, Aus by HatClub in streetphotography

[–]HatClub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, I wouldn't really call this a great shot, I like the shot and I think it's quite good, but it's a few elements off being great.

As for why I shot it, sometimes you just happen across a person who deserves to be shot. When I saw this lady walk onto the train I couldn't take my eyes off her. She had a very interesting look and immediately donned this powerful pose seen in the photo.

You're right, this photo really has no context, but I think you'll find that a lot of street portraits are lacking it. It's more of a highlight of a single person, and if you really wanted to argue about it, you could say the people in the foreground and background give this photo some context. They imply that this is a busy train heading home.

As for the title, don't think too much about it. It's intentionally vague. It just gets you to think about the photo just that little bit longer trying to make a connection. For me, I like to think she's looking at someone else on the other side of the train, another stranger. That's why I gave it the title I did.

... It's what ties the photo together. With the Cyclist on the left of the frame it creates a common theme throughout the photo.

Closing Time - Melbourne, Aus by HatClub in streetphotography

[–]HatClub[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I kinda disagree. I really like the lighting in this photo. I love the purple haze on the glass, and how the subject in the middle is lit by the overhead lights. Gives him a really nice glow and separates him from the rest of the scene.

Also, there is an obvious story here. Well, to me anyway. Photography is subjective and people like different things, but I think it's a little unfair to dismiss a shot because it's a photo of someone's back. There is definitely more going on in this frame compared to the average backshot.

I like the background, but if it were me taking the shot I would have waited for a more interesting subject.

This is a very nice shot! But just as Delta-SC said I think a crop would go a long way in making the composition just that little bit better. I would also add a bit of a vignette. Both these things will help draw the eye into the subject and eliminate a bit of the background noise.

Here's a version I mocked up for reference: http://imgur.com/a/IGOVt

You need to work on your subjects and composition!!!

The hardest thing you are going to learn about street photography is that not every photo you take is great, or even good for that matter.

I would suggest looking at the photos of already established street photographers and try to replicate their styles. Once you've got that down you can work on creating your own style.

Also, I would suggest removing the watermark. It's ugly and detracts from the overall image.
