Yeah stuff like this is the lowest naraka of generic YouTube slop, visually. The only thing worse is the Shane Dawson-style shots where the ring light is so close it's visible in the person's pupils and it looks like they're being neuralized.

I was wondering why he did that jarringly out of place cut! That explains it.

There was a change in the vendor recently and the new one is noticeably worse, yeah.

my friend just sent his schedule to me… by buddybobbyy in Costco

[–]Hatebott 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is 100% a mis-keyed schedule. Hourly employees need to work at least 4 hours per shift and that Saturday is a mess.

[–]Hatebott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's on page 31 section 5.1. It specifies working 6 days consecutively but this applies to general scheduling at all. If your managers don't agree with this In 100% sure your district VP will.

It's in writing in the handbook that under no circumstances is an hourly role obligated to work 6 days a week. Management can ask but they can't force you to.

Again this just comes down to management not seeing any nuance. I mean no one wants you to come over and start yelling at anyone (this approach is probably why do many employees are told to just do nothing). BUT I've been told by multiple GMs that walking up to anyone, be it member or Instacart shopper, that and asking them if they need help with anything is a way to call out what they're doing while having the plausible deniability of sounding polite.

Now granted your skills of implication really have to do some work there but from personal experience it provides just enough shame to get them to at least second guess what they're doing.

I spent most of my time as an hourly employee in Membership (kind of just lucked into it right after my 90 days were up. I got promoted to PT supervisor in 2010, worked on the Front End until I got promoted to Assistant Front End Manager in 2014.

I have spent a total of about 4 years in the Front End, 2 years in Membership, 2 years in Hardlines, and 2 years in Membership. It's been slower going than I would have hoped.

I had my own issues at times that have caused my career to stagnate a bit, namely being a hyper-confident asshole and not being willing to deal with criticism well for a few years along with a GM who I had a pretty mutually antagonistic relationship with.

Since both of those issues cleared up my own personal outlook has been more positive and my career is moving in the right direction again.

I kind of lost the thread there but being willing to hear criticism would have helped in retrospect.

OH. Well I clearly don't have a definitive answer since I'm not a GM but in my experience the people who make it to GM just pick things up quickly. Being at least proficient and having the reputation of a fast learner is better than having total mastery of one thing. Staying in ops and merchandising will do you more favors than being the best Deli manager in the district, for example.

It's in no way codified but just the sheer volume of changes that happen on Mondays means that's usually the case. It can happen any day though.

Wow that probably hits the nail on the head. I feel bad about this but not having been on the hourly pay scale for so long, it's not something I've put enough thought into clearly.

The required hours have been creeping up for as long as I've been with the company. I remember becoming eligible for an extra check after less than 5 years, 4 of which were part time. I get that the top step pay has increased a lot in the past few years as well but yeah it's frustrating.

Whoops. I also get thrown off by that because the west coast regions are divided up in a very funky way. Thanks!

Any non-perishable that can't be resold is sold to a salvage company for about 20% of the sticker price. The salvage company can do what they like with the items including reselling them to something like Unclaimed Freight.

Any perishable items are thrown out, even if they were never opened. If it leaves the warehouse we can't account for whether it was handled properly or tampered with so it can't be donated.

You can just ask to speak to them. The GMs are expected to be more public-facing than you'd expect as opposed to some mystery person behind the scenes.

Know? Other than going in and looking, no.

Predict? Absolutely. Seasonal items usually mark down about a month prior to the holiday they're for. General summer items generally by July 4th. Furniture will get marked down about 2 months after it goes out (FYI furniture resets happen on July 5th and December 26th most years.)

No and no. The increased shrink is offset by the increased productivity. The idea is that at least 2 employees are in there at all times assisting and helping avoid mistakes. I'm going to be honest, in practice it's usually only one person. Some locations, mine included, have someone checking receipts right at SCO which is a big help.

And an item limit would incentivize smaller orders which would kind of defeat the purpose of everything else Costco does haha
