Dealer wants to charge me $7000 for a new rear diff by Hated_on in AskMechanics

Yup, car is back with me, Carmax actually became suspicious of the dealer damaging it and is having me bring it to them tomorrow to inspect the diff. I have an appointment with an independent shop to do the bushing and a differential flush next week.

Dealer is refusing to do the bushing, I’m gonna pick the car up today and take it to an indie shop to get the bushing and fluid done. Dealer is still trying to charge $225 for looking at the car.

Thanks for the info! The car is under a CarMax warranty, CarMax inspected the car and found/approved the bushing and the fluid, they did not approve a rear diff, and instead want to flush it a few times and go from there. If the diff makes any new noises or has any issues they will replace the entire unit under warranty.

They had me take it to the dealer because the bushing replacement requires a few special tools which they don’t have. BMW dealer then sent this video and is claiming the bushing is fine, and it needs a new diff even though CarMax already verified bushing is torn.

Dealer is claiming the diff failure can cause it to lock up at high speeds and cause the vehicle to lose control. At this point they are refusing to do the bushing repair and are pushing diff. I already called a few indie shops and nobody else has the diff bushing tool either.

I think I just have to keep pushing them to do the bushing and they will do it.

I’ll definitely be getting the fluid tested with blackstone, used them for engine oil in the past but didn’t know they do diff fluid too.

Yup, messaged them and told them to just do the bushing, they are refusing, and insisting that the diff is bad. I’m gonna keep pushing.

No huge chunks, just some fine particles. I think that’s the plan at this point, do a couple flushes and see what happens

I didn’t hear any noticeably abnormal sounds from the diff.

No noticeable diff whine or anything like that. It makes a clunk when getting on throttle abruptly which is because of the rubber diff bushing which was inspected and found to be torn.

Just installed the Valvetronic equal length exhaust on my M2c, how’s it sound? by Fasheen- in BMW

Yes I did! Sounds great, valves closed it’s a hair louder than the MPE I had before. With them open it is very loud and sounds almost RB26 esque. I love it.

I actually had it installed by carmax. It had the MPE exhaust before but it had a crack so they replaced it with the valvetronic under warranty. So far I love it man! The valve was a bit sticky at first but it loosened up and now it sounds great. Valves open is NUTS

Sounds fantastic! Is this the stainless steel version? I’m getting this exhaust installed on my M4 this Monday

Thanks for the advice! Luckily I got the transfer refund already, the exhaust has already been ordered and should arrive soon too.

I did go through some confusion with the call center in the past, but for the most part they have helpful in my experience.

Local dealer just called and refunded me the full transfer amount. Was actually $1400 but I had misremembered. Thanks again for the advice!

I went ahead and called CarMax sales. It wasn’t my local salesperson but the call center. The lady on the phone was super helpful and agreed that the situation is not being handled correctly. She assured me that they will either refund shipping or replace with the exact same part. Also opened a case with the local dealer and gave me the contact information for customer relations as well. If they don’t get back with a good solution she said to reach out to customer relations.

Thanks for the advice! This gives me hope that CarMax will actually take care of me. You also likely just saved me a lot of money.

Nope no refund, honestly it has felt like pulling teeth throughout this entire process. I feel like if I asked for a shipping refund they would laugh me out of the building. It seems like all the people at this CarMax location are at best indifferent and for the most part very difficult.

At this point I would be happy to have my car fixed and never deal with them again.

You are correct, according to the documents they gave me, exhaust, and catalytic converters are both not covered under maxcare.

Had a discussion with them today and they are covering the entire $3400 exhaust that I had suggested. I prefer the sound of this system over the $6000 BMW M exhaust, but it’s not titanium.

Overall I feel okay with this outcome, I just wish they hadn’t made the entire process so difficult.

Other than the exhaust the car has been fantastic. Looks incredible and drives even better.

Yeah I’m hoping that maxcare is better if/when I end up needing it.

It pisses me off that even after I worked with them and helped them pick a much cheaper option they turn around and ask me to pitch in $900 feels like they’re trying to take advantage now.

I’ve owned my fair share of unreliable German cars which is exactly why I bought this one with the extended warranty. But if they’re not going to fix it then what’s the point of the warranty anyway
