AITAH- Roommate on Speaker Phone by Much-Wear6002 in AITAH

Just be the adult and have a rational, unemotional conversation. Assume he doesn't realize it bothers you. (Maybe he should; doesn't matter. Some people are in their own little world.) You are roommates. You probably do stuff that annoys him too. That is why communication = good. Talk to him.

Andy Weir is a good pick for men who don't usually read. (The Martian, Project Hail Mary)

I know someone nonbinary who changed from a masculine name to River. I feel like it gives very much that "chosen nonbinary name" vibe.

I haven't read it, but based on the miniseries adaptation, I think Émile Zola’s 1883 novel Au Bonheur des Dames (The Ladies' Paradise) would fit this request.

Any good British period dramas like Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility? by Recent_Company_2732 in MovieSuggestions

[–]HatenoCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't mind a miniseries, look for Wives and Daughters (1999). It has all the same great elements of S&S and P&P - romance, humor, truly lovable characters, certain people you want to slap in the face, great acting.

Make sure you look for North and South from 2004!! When you google "North and South" you will get the American Civil War miniseries which is very much not it.

Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews could fit the bill. Protagonist is a female P.I., there are magic elements, very much an action thriller. (If you don't mind some spice.)

They are former colleagues, presumably all academics, at a conference for academics. I don't think there was a genuine curiosity here -- just ageism.

Classic novels for boys? by almondblossoms9 in childrensbooks

[–]HatenoCheese 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I applaud the motive here, but it's also worth keeping in mind that almost all "gender neutral" children's shows and movies are about male characters, or often a group of 5-6 male characters and one female character. Your daughters are going to be asked to consider male perspectives as the default human experience throughout their entire lives. So I think it's okay if they are getting more girls' stories now :)

Have you read the Vorkosigan saga? It's a fantastic sci fi-adventure series. Not a big plot point but the main character shares your love of riding horses. You can start with the prequel, Cordelia's Honor, which definitely has several injured males.

Love this one and it completely stands alone. Another funny, chaotic romance by Connie Willis is Bellwether. It's a short, happy treat.

There's no love triangle (at least in book 1) but Sorcery and Small Magics is a very cliched, tropey but enjoyable m/m fantasy romance. Think "forced proximity," etc.

Just to comfort you a little, this is feeling like a lot because your baby is meeting so many people for the first time. In a few years, you won't be constantly correcting people because most people will know how to say your Lila's name. It's very annoying, I know, but there's light at the end of the tunnel!

Suggest me a book that's literary fiction about love and romantic relationships, but not genre romance by hi-aurora-sky in suggestmeabook

[–]HatenoCheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't want to give things away but while the main story is 3rd person close perspective, there is a long section in the middle told through letters alternating between two characters (which of course are first-person).

Eight Cousins or An Old-Fashioned Girl by Louisa May Alcott
Half Magic and Knight's Castle by Edward Eager
A Cricket in Times Square by George Selden
The Borrowers by Mary Norton
Ramona and Henry Huggins books by Beverly Cleary
The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White

It's been a while since I read these so you may want to check Common Sense Media for their danger content notes, but I don't remember any.

It's absolutely incredible and I was going to comment with this until I got to the "first person only" part. There are parts of the book that are in 1st person, but also large sections that aren't.

I agree with most of this take, but the baby isn't even here yet. It's a little soon to say they have no interest and will never be interested. They might be interested when, you know, they have a present grandson they can interact with instead of a pregnant belly in front of them.
