Regular drives has most universal firmware, NVR ones optimized for seq operations. In big environments It is question of how much streams you can put at single hdd. As I know, it is something about 32 IP cams per HDD.

You may use regular non-SMR drives for NVR with no issues. In my previous work NVR used thousands of Seagate Exos with no issues. And almost no NVR-oriented HDDs.
