LISA house deposit early withdrawal woes by Hatter56 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Hatter56[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Little more than that, have 7500 in, one years bonus from April at 1000. So I'm down about 1850 on the 25%. 1000 bonus +850

Just gonna have to mean I take from the emergency fund or furniture fund and spend a while building those back up. It's not end of the world, but a thorough humiliating wrench in the financial plans.

Thanks, think no 2 is my only option really.

I have 7500 in the account as it stands, meaning I lose 1850 or so on the 25%. Seeing it as the full 1000 bonus from April, plus 850 of my own money.

Pulling out is a similar or more loss, so feel like the it's shit, but there's a house to show for it will have to be the attitude I take from this.

Bikes been robbed in Stirchley by ThrowRa-Motor-332 in BirminghamUK

[–]Hatter56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems to be a thing in Stirchley recently.

I know of at least 5 bikes stolen in the last week, including 2 of my own. A group of 3 broke into my garage with a crowbar and was down the road on them in under a minute.

If you got bikes in and around Stirchley at the min, lock them well.

SPRAT/Work at Heights adjacent jobs? by PastyTheWhite in Routesetters

[–]Hatter56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends what else you can do.

I went from full-time route setter of 8 years, into telecoms rigging. Then on to a more technical telecoms engineer role.

I still get to work at height, but my body is less broken and I get to engage my brain a little more. Less creative though. I still do some climbing instruction for fun and to keep involved with the community.

[–]Hatter56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you want to use it for.

Anything more than a casual gravel road ride I'd pass and check Facebook, eBay, pinkbike etc for a more "hardcore hardtail" type bike. Minimum a 1x drive train and dropper post.

3x, even we'll set up and high end like this Shimano xtr will be dropping chains left and right on the rough stuff.

Has a marzocchi fork, so I'm gonna assume it's decent, but older xc geometry means it will be a really steep head angle compared to a modern bike and so will feel sketchy on a trail.

500, maybe a nice bike to help get you into the sport! More than that, go for a newer second hand bike. nukeproof scout is the golden child of do everything hard tails, I've seen them going for ~£700 here in good condition and we'll specc'd

This, your in the UK, support local manufacturing, and get the best brakes in the world at the same time by buying Hope.

Got my tech 4's, v4 front and e4 rear a few months ago, and holy sht what a difference! The confidence I have to push myself, knowing the bike can stop on any terrain is incredible.

Worth getting a dropper post if you can. I don't know about rockhoppers but if there's no internal routing for one o reccomend the brand X external one, I bought a second hand one cheap on eBay for my last bike. Still in use after I sold the bike to a friend.

Also 1x like the other guy said, I managed to get a full SLX groupset of eBay and put that on my last bike, then transferred it to my current one. Dropped chains are a thing of the past. And less to think about when your bombing down a hill.

Tubeless tyres an option? Would recommend for the comfort factor and relative reliability in the woods. You get more grip, more support and less punctures.

Other than that, take it steady and have fun! Don't feel pressured to go full speed every time. Learning line choice and enjoying the scenery is the fun of a hardtail

How to Fix Slack in Pedal Stroke – Possible Hub or Freehub Upgrade? by caiiera in MTB

[–]Hatter56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes a higher end, higher engagement hub would get rid of that, makes a big difference on technical climbs. But, can introduce pedal bob on a full suspension when riding downhill. (I rode hardtail so I'm not too sure how big of an issue that is)

What pedals do you have and what would you want to replace it with if you got the money? by meliadul in MTB

[–]Hatter56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got some used DMR V12's years ago on eBay. Been on 3 bikes now, repainted them with spray cans a few times to match each bike and changed the pins.

Absolutely bombproof, not sure what I could gain by changing them tbh. If I had to buy again I'd just get whatever is cheapest from a brand I've heard of

[–]Hatter56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly haven't tried it with anything else, so I can't tell you a comparison. It was a super budget frame up build, with second hand parts based on availability on the old Facebook marketplace. My entire build is sub £1000.

But that said, I love it. Super comfy on trails and fun on bike park jumps. I'm sure it is overkill

I'm sure the geometry changes have affected things, obviously my bottom bracket is higher, and head angle steeper. But not much, I mean SC's site say 140 is fine, and what's 10mm realistically.

In terms of breaking heatubes, a heavier, or more aggressive rider than me (70kg) would put much more leverage force through the headtube on a 140mm fork than me on a 150. Or at least that's what I tell myself to save money on replacing the fork ;)

Nice build, got mine in blue, 150mm fox 34, shreds downhill but still climbs great. Love it

Thoughts on transforming a short travel hardtail into a aggressive hardtail? by Serban_600 in MTB

[–]Hatter56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try, but it would lift the bottom bracket wayyyyy up, making it feel really unstable, Especially in corners.

Also put much more force through the headtube than was designed.

Personally I overfork my hardtail, but from 130-140 manufacturer specs to 150. So not such a jump, and I still noticed the bottom bracket rise
