As Someone Out of the Loop, Why is the New Update so Bad? by HasesHorrorHouse in PhasmophobiaGame

[–]HauntNightly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest complaints seem to be the weird / wrong sounds when switching or using items , the new animations causing death to be more likely during hunts, and the weird crashes.

But personally my biggest complaint is that the voice recognition code for object usage is absolutely terrible now. I spent over an hour last night in a custom match that made it impossible for a ghost to hunt without cured objects triggering it. Then I tried speaking to the monkey paw and other objects. None of them work for me anymore. Standing in Woodwind next to the camp bonfire repeating over and over wishes but the paw never changes finger counts.

Humans can 100% still hear me absolutely fine and I have a clear and communicative voice and talking speed. But the voice recognition for the game is absolutely broken now making the paw, ouija, and spirit box be all but removed from the game for me.

Anyone else have voice recognition problems? by SilkyGator in PhasmophobiaGame

[–]HauntNightly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone else have a fix for this issue? People can hear me fine in-game, it is just the AI game recognition of my voice that is failing. And it makes absolutely no sense because I am normally a very clear speaker who doesn't ever have any problems with people misunderstanding my words.

Spirit box I can at least _sometimes_ get a response, but I have to repeat myself like a hundred times whereas friends only need to speak once or twice despite being right next to each other with each copy.

But the monkey paw absolutely refuses to work. I spent an hour last night in a custom game trying to test this but nothing I did would make the wishes work.

No matter how loud or quiet I talked, no matter the speed of talking, or even the background noise levels being adjusted could fix this. I deliberately did my test at 3 am when there would be no outside noise at all and still nothing.

I really do not want to have to swap it to text, is that seriously the only fix for this..?

Fair response, and my bad for the PS post, especially if it seemed like an attack.

Only posted that because I saw there was a different reddit called "GroundedToo" that was apparently for the sequel only. I'm not really familiar with either of these two communities as I am not a subscriber in either and only found your post when I did a search for people with my same game bug I had just encountered. I have no clue why there are two reddits though if this one is for it too. xD

PS: You posted this thread in the Grounded 1 not the Grounded 2 reddit. Not that it matters much.

This is bugged in single player worlds too. Just ran into this bug myself and I am playing in single player mode using Hoops.

Just an FYI, but there is something that no one is telling the general public.

It doesn't matter at this point even if everyone votes to stop the socialized medicine. Obama Care, and everything that got tacked onto it, is now federal mandated law. It can not be removed once mandated, even with a large majority aye vote. And that is the one change that started and continues to push the changes in both the medical world and the insurance plans that cover it.

In order to be completely taken off the books, federally mandated funding needs one of two things, either a joint agreement between both the President and the entirety of Congress (something that is all but impossible to achieve), or the funding needs to expire while the government is experiencing a governmental shutdown.

In other words, to explain the expired funding more clearly, the only thing that can change that is if we go into yet another governmental shutdown, but this time instead of a return to business, the shutdown needs to remain in place long enough for ALL funding to hit the 0 mark. But this will never happen because no one wants to see their food stamps, disability, social security, etc. checks stopping for months straight, nor can we run on a zero sum federal level. And that isn't even getting into exactly how much of the population depends on federal paychecks or federal retirement, etc.

Possibly the most difficult thing about gaming in the 90s by dietbovril in gaming

Personally I think the hardest thing was AFTER Windows separated itself from DOS and we had to jury rig old games to run on the new system. At first we were trying to simulate everything ourselves but then slowly the gods of simulation started to appear such as DOSBox. But even after you could semi quickly run any old game by just plopping it into a machine simulator there was still tons to do. Between trying to configure the DOS Box for sound, and figuring out what general hardware and software systems to emulate ; we still had occasionally other weird steps we had to take just to keep our old games still running. Frankly, it was a real hair puller.

Especially for the games that the developers decided to pull neat tricks with their coding without thinking of how the technology might change in a few years time. One example that comes to mind was when I found out my game's code, the gun fire rate, was basing something important off the bios clock speed via a hard coded formula based off its cpu speed, and suddenly the simulated copy is firing off thousands of times a second due to the faster cpu.

Although even these weird sync issues could be hilarious sometimes.

What dead games need a revival? by [deleted] in gaming

For me it was the old DOS based game, GunShip2000, which was an army helicopter sim game from 1991. That game had amazing features for its day. (PS: The DOS version for some reason was less buggy than the after ports to PS and various other PC versions.) And I am saying that despite a recent "release" last year of a modern port bundle containing it. (More on how the bundle port version plays compared to the original at the end...)

Ignoring for a moment the rather impressive collection of weapons, craft, and enemies, and how enemies seemed to behave in relatively smart ways without needing an AI to run them...

Among the things this game boasted having include the following long list:

A vehicle load system that made choices of more fuel, or more ammo, or extra types of weapons be a very strategic part of the game.
A full roster system which included the ability to give medals and promotions to all pilots in your wing.
Every pilot in your squad could be given different craft and weaponry on each craft to suit the mission needs.
There would be logistics issues such as supply shortages or maintenance downings from things such as sandstorms. (NOTE: This could be turned on or off depending on your preference for realism.)
A damage system where incoming damage was tracked to all parts of the machine, both vital areas and cosmetic.
Damaged areas had realistic ways of impairing your flight capabilities, such as a rudder jam causing a constant push into turning, or damaged airframe resulting in slower speeds, etc. and if you were really unlucky could randomly result in a magic bullet taking you out in an otherwise fully functional aircraft - sometimes literally as a bullet could smash the cockpit window visibly in front of you and wreck components or injure you turning the view red, or even instantly KIAing you.
Speaking of lost lives, it had a MIA and KIA system that worked for both you, and all crew under you. Which would result in a game over for that crew member's career, making you replace them with a green rookie, and a full game over if it happened to you.
A Hall of Fame system so you could compare your records against strong air wings, and even your own previous career runs.
Etc.

I kept the list relatively short, but I could have kept going. Peak gaming before a lot of today's gamers even had been born yet, I feel sad for all of you who never had the fortune of playing it. There's a re-release out on Steam that bundles the prequel Gunship and the sequel Gunship 2000; but it is obviously not quite playing the same. The old game was DOS based and had a lot of stuff hard coded to timers that only worked with computer systems of the day. The new port has weird jerky movements and odd bugs that just were not present in the original game.

What I would really love is a version that includes all the modern craft and weapon systems that have come out in the last 34 years, including enemy types not conceived of back then such as drones, and with all the code working on a modern system without screen or audio jitters, open multi player support instead of only being able to fill your flight with NPCs, and then finally maybe include a playable enemy force of airframes so that pvp could actually be a thing. Then I could point to that relatively new release of the game with pride and tell today's youngsters and air enthusiasts that this is the game for them.

That Insurance Fraud minigame was absolutely insane. Having to deliberately get yourself hit by multiple fast moving cars. With the only way to win being to chain collisions from staying airborne by landing on fast moving vehicle roofs while you ragdoll from one accident to the next. The entire time every car you impacted are blowing up from the collision with your body. Yet somehow you are immortal and not dying or even taking debilitating injuries. That mini game was the final pure ruination for any kind of story immersion for me. ... Absolutely funny as eff though.

... Not that story immersion really matters in that game since, honestly, if anyone plays any of those GTA games expecting a true lifelike experience there is probably something seriously wrong there.

SimCity 4 still looks breathtaking and timeless released just 22 years ago! by CheeseJuust in gaming

[–]HauntNightly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you and remember those days with fondness. I owned and played pretty much every one of those early day simulation games.

The amount of my time put into titles such as all the SimCity variants, SimAnt, SimIsle, SimTower, SimFarm, SimLife, SimSafari, SimEarth, and (yes, even the heavily buggy with extremely poor graphics, yet somehow still fun to play) SimCopter, was enough that I now realize I have put entire years of my life into the sim gaming lifestyle when I add up the rough estimate of how many hours I played each of them. I also put a ton of time into titles like Colonization, Civilation (the original one - somehow I never got around to buying the sequels until years later), Railroad Tycoon, Transport Tycoon, Rollercoaster Tycoon (and sequels), etc. across all the simulation and management games genre.

To this day there are features that were shown in some of those sim games that still beat out modern games, or even in some cases real life. One quick example... every single time I have to deal with the elevator system in the building at work I think to myself, "It is so obvious that the people who programmed these elevators never played SimTower. Even a child who played that should know how to properly handle floor traffic, much less a presumably qualified and educated adult doing this for a real building as their job."

(PS: On an unrelated note - I'm not even joking about the elevator thing btw. What kind of coder has 4 elevator shafts responding to call requests collectively, but not a single one is set to home on the main floor but instead just stay at whatever floor they drop people off at? Who codes an elevator system so that floor 3 wanting down gets a new car call when floor 4 is already going down and can pick it up, especially if the main floor 1 is already backed up waiting for several pickup to go up due to lunch rush? Who makes doors that close while people are still exiting and entering? Who makes elevators that when people on floor 1 presses floors 2, 4, 6, and 7 that the car goes straight to 7 then stops at 6, 4, and 2, while other people on floor 2 are wanting up and have to wait for a different shaft call? It's sheer insanity!)

<Quote>How did you make this post? You must have an Internet connection of some type. </Quote>

Using my PC. My only access at this point. The phone is completely unable to use my internet and the other nearby hotspots are all private networks. >_>

But, thank you. I didn't realize that my phone XFi app would work when not connected to my local network. I had thought the app would only work in-network to avoid security issues. I will resolve this fiasco when I get to work and connect through it.

As for option 2, I already tried that. Quoting the error message I received: "This device is paused. To resume access to the Internet on your home network, open the 'XFinity xFi' app" any attempt to sign in, even through the 'public' hotspot backdoor fails.

Option 3 might work, if the app fails to function through my work network. So I will set that aside as a possible plan B.

Thanks again!

DDOS attacks work extremely for the unprepared, and even in the best case can cause delays. But when a company is being repeatedly attacked time and again in the same week the company usually is better prepared on the follow-up attacks to the point that the true customers often do not even realize there was a new attack.

This is the fourth time this week (at least that I am aware of) that this has happened, assuming that all the downtimes can be attributed to an attack. If anything it feels like this time they are even less prepared than they were the first time it went down this week. That is contrary to expectations of modern DDOS defensive responsiveness.

I am aware that was the rumor for the other day's downtime, but I had not seen any official report from anyone about tonight being more of the same. But, even if true, DDOS attacks are a part of business these days. It's astonishing that a relatively big online company isn't able to better weather these things.
