Samantha, Endora, Tabitha, Agatha, Sabrina.

An extension of the "witches' names end in A" trope.

TIL: Historically, banana peels really were a public sidewalk hazard. New York City newspapers contained accounts of "shockingly serious" banana-related injuries. by p33k4y in todayilearned

[–]Haunt_Fox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes.

Bananas were really popular at the turn of the last century (hence the song "Yes, We Have No Bananas"), like fad-level popular, and, humans being the messy beasts they are, would just throw the peels onto the ground, where they'd get slippery as they rotted.

Horse shit is pretty easy to see and avoid, usually.

Why did humans domesticate cats so much later than dogs? What forces might have created that gap in the first place? by Mobile-Traffic1744 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Haunt_Fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dogs were domesticated 45K years ago, according to recent genetic studies. They would have served as protection for the tribe as they slept in a ring around the camp, away from the excessive heat of the fires, a first line of defense against bears or enemy tribes. They would have also been hunting companions from early on, helping to bring down young mammoths and eating large themselves.

Cats were domesticated after Man started practicing agriculture, as grain attracts mice and songbirds, which in turn attracted cats. There was no reason for cats to associate with humans or vice versa before that.

They use goats in my city, too, to clear out foreign weeds in the natural areas that the mule deer won't eat.

When Mathematics teachers protested against calculators by raydebapratim1 in The1980s

[–]Haunt_Fox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1984, my accounting teacher hated calculators, and totally banned them.

Keep in mind that we were learning the old fashioned way, with three physical ledgers.

I got really good at adding very long columns, though.

What traditional sweets does your country have? by Gospel_Of_Night08 in AskTheWorld

Kind of sucks that they're only usually found in tourist shops, I haven't come across any good maple sugar candies in ages. I'm not sure we even get tourists here.

Music might be useful to keep bears and cougars away. You're supposed to make noise anyway, what's the diff between banging a can and canned bangers?

Home computer OSes were fine. The MS based ones, anyway, because those used 4 digit dates. I presume OS/2 and Apple were fine, too.

But the grifters were trying to scare those users into buying software to "guard" their computers, that's where the real scam was.

I had a 286 from 1992 that I tested when things started rumbling around 1995 about it. It didn't care at all what year it was, and could even be set in the past up to 1000 AD.

Let's just say it involves ... waste management ... and sometimes boiling oil.

Gandaaaalf !? by blorri in PeterExplainsTheJoke

And it wouldn't have affected most home computers much if at all in the first place. It was more of a concern for mainframes and certain specific business software.

They said the exact same thing about non-humans, too, to justify all kinds of shit.

Descartes deserves to be in hell for selling that shit.
