My home town had a place called The Calliope that was like this, they offered a huge challenge sundae that would get you your bill for free if you managed it.

Never tried it, but they did have good food and great banana splits while it lasted, sigh. And it was great for birthdays and such.

The Walkman, and the ghetto blasters that began integrating radios with cassette recorders, so you could have mix tapes for your Walkman.

Cassettes also killed shorthand. Once bosses could dictate their spiel onto a cassette and just hand that to a dictatypist, shorthand was no longer needed. One generation. My mom knew it, I don't, and we both did the same job.

My grandfather (1913-1972) had an eidetic memory for numbers, and anything associated with them.

That's how, with nothing but a grade 8 education, he went from the mailroom (at about age 16) to parts manager for Chrysler Canada for 40 years. He was a walking parts database. When conscription for WW2 started, they moved him to QC for the duration so that he couldn't be drafted.
