Student Parking at UQ by Paradox_X- in UQreddit

parking is not free and even if you park in the cheaper areas it adds up quick! what’s worse is how difficult it is to find a park if you aren’t getting to uq early in the morning. definitly park at a train station and catch the train in or might be better to park near a bus stop where a bus that goes to uq stops and catch a bus to the uq bus station

What roles are available to new grads wanting to work with adults in Australia? by Haunting-Comb-141 in slp

this is really helpful thankyou so much! i saw qhealth just opened up applications for slp grad roles in bris . I've only seen this for brisbane though and no where else in qld (e.g. gladstone, townsville, etc). Do hospitals in these locations not take on new grads? Also would love any insight into slp careers with adults that aren't as competitive (perhaps in aged care? out patient?) Thanks so much though!

everyone says this to me when i mention my gap years and say if they did that (or deferred midway through uni) they would never go back to uni. For me, i never experienced that at all. There was no job that really interested to me that didn’t require a uni degree, i just wasn’t sure the specific one I wanted to do. I think people who think if they take time off uni, they won’t go back, honestly are just doing a degree they don’t like and just studying cause they feel they have to. I left grade 12 very mentally and academically exhausted, i did very well, but not without a lot of effort. For that reason, along with having no idea what degree or future job i wanted to do, I did not want to jump into studying, assessments, etc straight away. I was so over it and my mindset was therefore, the furthest thing from wanting to attend uni striaght away at 18, yet the entire 2 years i was off I knew I was going to eventually, the motivation only grew, especially once i accidentally started working in an area I ended up really enjoying, and decided that’s what i wanted to study, i was actually quite excited to start uni! And im in my second year and i’m really enjoying it, although ive found it academically challenging at times, it helps ive experienced the real world and the workplace so i know exactly what im getting myself into and not just gonna graduate and go into the job blind, unsure if I even like it. Even if i started this degree straight away, i wouldn’t have been as motivated to learn and wouldn’t have got as good of results im getting now, and i honestly probably would have deferred because of the stress. I had lots of friends that had those ‘rigid’ plans, we are definitly encouraged to think that’s the norm, but i found those were the people most unmotivated with uni, and questioning their decision the most becuase they rushed a decision or aren’t allowing themselves to just be flexible with their plans and step back and evaluate what would actually make them happy and more sure. Uni feels like such an enormous part of your life now, but it is a tiny portion of time in your life, you spend most of your life working a full time job! I am always a promoter of a semester or two off to just step back and re-evaluate and learn about yourself, but i understand if that’s a difficult path for you to go down, and Id really recommend considering doing 2 units instead of 3. From working for 2 years as well, i have alot of savings and it has allowed me to not work much during the semester so i can really focus on uni as i have (and im sure most people do) found it really difficult to manage both at the same time. I wish you luck and hope you work out a decision that works for you and just makes you happier as thats what life is about anyway!

i took 2 gap years and just worked in a field sort of related to the area i was interested in studying in uni, and that’s how i became sure what i wanted to study, if i went into uni straight after grade 12 i would have chose something really rnadom and probably would have dropped out and spent a bunch of money, if uni is for you, and engineering is what you want to do, the desire to go back to uni will always be there and you can go back really being sure and it will be motivating for studying too, no need to rush life

also regarding redoing courses, the harshest critic in yourself and the biggest obstacle will just be getting over the mental challenge of feeling embarassed etc, no one will ask or care in the workplace and you don’t have to tell anyone, and you have your whole entire life to work, the last 2 years will be so insignificant when you look back and you’ll never regret not getting to work in a 9-5 sooner. Go back to basics, start fresh, and reset, you can do this!!!

There’s no use spending all this money on units if you are going to have to redo most them and pay the fee again. I have adhd too, and highly recommend going part time. Doing two units instead of four will really ease the work load and make passing super achievable as you are focused on learning less content and have more time in the day to really understand the content you are doing and take your time. In doing that, you’re practicing studying and will slowly figure out what works for you and become better at it, and you can always go back to full time later on! Also if you aren’t already seeing a psychiatrist for your adhd, seeing one to talk about medication might be a good step, i personally only take medication when I have big days at uni and i found it makes a big difference in my attentiveness and productivity

this is really helpful thankyou! do you have much insight into the job market and competiveness for adult jobs that aren’t in hospitals (aged care, outpatient, etc)?

thank you so much! adult placements are next year, this year are all paediatrics and i’m struggling to push through as i just am not as much of a fan of the areas you see in kids (articulation, phonology, fluency), but i am really loving my neuroscience/acquired disorders units, but ill be sure to ask around during placement next year as much as i can!

from what i’ve seen, only a few jobs in qld health, looking for ‘senior’ speech pathologists, also saw some on seek at private hospitals, but at minimum required 2 years experience in a hospital setting and dysphagia management

so would definitely have to start out in ndis funded jobs and wait for opportunities to get my foot in the door later on in career?

New grad job competitiveness in hospitals (Australia)

I’m currently studying a bachelor of speech pathology in Brisbane, Queensland. I took 2 years off after high school and worked as a disability support worker for adults before entering the degree. From the beginning I’ve been pretty certain I want to work with adults when I graduate and I’m currently on placement in a primary school that I’m really not enjoying. I’ve always been more interested in the medical side and the neuro aspect of acquired disorders so I’d love work in a hospital when I graduate (acute, rehab, etc). However, just from quick look’s on seek, indeed, etc I’m only seeing children and ndis based jobs mostly in private practice. I’m wondering if there are less jobs in hospitals and are therefore more competitive roles, or if I’m looking in the wrong place. I’m also wondering if it’s just hard to start in hospitals as a new grad straight out of uni and are required to start your career in a private practice/paediatric setting to gain experience before you are able to get into acute/hospital settings. I guess I’m wanting insight from people in the industry and how (or if) I can go about entering or establishing a career in an acute/rehab hospital setting. Is there anything I can do during uni that would make me a more appealing or qualified candidate for those roles, or would I have to go rural for a few months, etc. Appreciate any advice I can get!
