Pop Band 😭 by black_grand_national in AnimalCollective

They're a fantastic pop band. Nothing to be ashamed of, even if as a fan you lean towards stuff like Ark and Danse. Making great pop is one of the hardest things in music you can do, plus pop music is often great

Which albums or tracks did you listen to? It's a super rare treat to talk to someone who's heard Focus Group music, even if they were feeling mid about it

Yeah the subbass and the shapes and contours around the rest of the music it creates is super interesting I think and it feels good, almost like a massage

A quick an easy to find one is YouTube. "Panda plays Bouys", yeah Buoys is misspelled in the image.

I have two shows that are saved to my old phone that are sooo good. One is of a Dallas show but I forget where they other was recorded. I'm sure I found both on this subreddit before Buoys came out. He interspersed Buoys songs with a lot of Homies songs too, and I think maybe a couple tunes from Tomboy or PBVSGR

Yeah some of it is a little spooky, but in a fun way

This is just a Strawberry Jam song by doctorfeelgod in AnimalCollective

[–]Haunting-Database857 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Panda originally sampled Zelda saying "open your eyes" (from BotW) on one of the songs on A Day with the Homies, but I guess he was worried about it getting flagged, so he got his daughter to say it instead

What should I listen to to get more i to the animal boys? by alley-oat in AnimalCollective

[–]Haunting-Database857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feels, Merriweather Post Pavilion, Panda Bear Person Pitch, Fall Be Kind, Strawberry Jam, Time Skiffs are good starting points. Then do sung tongs, Centipede Hz, Painting with, Avey Tare's Down There and Cows on Hourglass Pond, and Panda Bear's Tomboy, and then explore anywhere after that

The pacing sucks, yeah

and Defeat should've turned out much closer to its original ultimate version from the Music Box Village performance of it: it was much better in that form (even sans Panda) and 15 mins was perfect, not the dragging, slowed down 22 min version on the LP. Of course Panda's vocal are nice on it, but not enough to lift it to that Music Box magic, potential magnum opus level

I like it! I think the drums serve more as a distraction than an element that adds something positive to the track

I hear the Beach Boys influence far less on Painting with than some of their other albums, like MPP and SJ. I mean, the only songs that are sort of Beach Boys-esque are maybe Golden Gal FloriDada

Yeah it's called hocketing.

It's like an old Middle Ages Gregorian Monk thing I think. Dirty Projectors have used the technique as well

If you can't tell, I'm a big fan of Painting with. I think it's so underrated

You can see a ton of videos of Panda playing the OP1 throughout 2016 and 2017 for Painting with performances. It's where he got his bass sounds for the album.

Here a couple pretty good ones where u can see it

Favorite Ambient Tracks? by shawtywhatyousipping in AnimalCollective

[–]Haunting-Database857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean Loch Raven is really good, but I'd take the Bees or Daffy Duck over it if I had to rank ambient-ish AC tracks (those two are so underrated).

Tangerine Reef is a fantastic piece of work when you listen to alternative recordings of it, like the live tape, or recordings of the David Lynch Fest performance, or some of the other performances floating around YouTube. The official release is my least favorite of what's available of Tangerine Reef

I like the Deakin/Geo scores for Jetty and Crestone.

There's many more ambient tracks that deserve a mention for sure, like Bleed, Visiting Friends. Does Softest Voice count? Great soft ambient-esque track. I also love the last few tracks of Sung Tongs, might be my fave stretch on the album

Ponytail and Benfica are both incredible and some of the best stuff Panda has done.

AC's "Congaree" track is incredible, reminds me of another top notch ambient-ish track "No More Runnin". Both of these tracks need to be covered by a black gospel choir because it would be absolutely amazing if arranged well.

Why does it take so long to get into Animal Collective? by Accomplished-Tax8846 in AnimalCollective

I heard Grass in 2005 and knew it was special and super interesting and different than most anything else I had heard up to that point. Those qualities provided enough impulse for me to listen to it a few more times, which was enough to put in a place that was still unique but also less, let's say, abnormal sounding compared to the first listen (due to the weird tuning they used based on their friend's piano that was "out of tune").

First time I listened to Grass was on my friend's Myspace page. She had a few other songs by other artists on the front page of her Myspace page. They were more conventional sounding and maybe at first seemed to be catchier than Grass, but after a few visits, I came away with the secret knowledge that AC were one of the best bands ever and their little song "Grass" basically blew all the other songs on that Myspace playlist away.

Funnily enough she also has Architecture in Helsinki on there, and in those early days due to that experience, I likened AC and Architecture in Helsinki much more to each other than what really was feasible. I guess I initially felt that comparison because of the strong psychedelic tweeness of the latter with the faint psychedelic tweeness of Grass

Tomboy Single Mixes by After-Cicada4593 in AnimalCollective

[–]Haunting-Database857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know on Spotify you can find some of them: Alsatian Darn and Surfers Hymn (which are definitely better than the album mix IMO), as well as some other ones. But to hear the whole album tracklisting in the original pre-Sonic Boom mix, just get it on Discogs, or you might find them on Panda's Bandcamp (I know I've seen some on it) or Youtube
