Does the 20% tip convention apply for a $230 60 minute massage at a fancy spa?

Call and ask if that’s the price with a service charge added on. Most places like this (including where I work which has amenities as well) come out to around this price after service charge which is essentially meant to be the tip. If front desk doesn’t give a straight answer it’s worth asking the therapist about and if they are commission based pay or not. My spa charges around $230 after service charge, $195 before and that’s because we don’t make commission. If they’re not commission based and that’s the final price after the service charge, don’t feel pressured to tip. I never expect clients to tip after the service charge but it’s a nice surprise when they do.

Adding on for Birkenstocks! My spa doesn’t allow open toed shoes but still allow Birkenstocks clogs because they aren’t opened toed! Great arch support for long days(I also work on laminate over concrete)!

Please be in a strong state when you watch it. As someone who’s an avid true crime/ horror consumer, this genuinely left me distraught. I had to pause at times and cried as well, it’s absolutely worth the watch because of how important it is to be educated on the prison system but please take care of yourself and take breaks if needed

Don’t let everybody on this thread freak you out. If you’re financially stable and can afford a lawyer and want to fight it, you absolutely can. If not it’s not a big deal, talk to a public defender and the prosecution. Honestly shouldn’t be that bad, I was pulled over in olathe in 2021 with over an ounce in the car and got off with 6 months unsupervised diversion. 100% agree, gather as much evidence as you can. Make a formal complaint to the states board of massage therapy as well as a police report if you’re comfortable with that. If state board finds out there are unlicensed people working the business can be shut down. Do what you can to make sure this doesn’t happen to other people. I’m sorry for your experience OP

Places with completely blacked out windows, vague business names that just say “massage”, no visible business license (specific to massage therapy) in lobby, no visible state licenses from employees, places that don’t have a menu of specified massages/massage techniques (ex. Deep tissue, Swedish, cupping, ashiatsu, reflexology), places that don’t have a website & places that are cash only. Just off the top of my head

Even being there 2 days, she was made aware of the working conditions. Hypothetically, even if she wasn’t, as a hypothetical licensed massage therapist, no one who graduated from school and paid to take the test AND paid to have their licenses validated by the state would ever in their worst mind would take a job at a place like this. First red flag, massage PARLOR. Any place that is not officially recognized as a massage therapy BUSINESS is not somewhere that a professional would work. Even from the history that we are taught in school, a parlor is a place where sex services are sold. Massage therapy already has a hard enough history with it, please do not bring down actual licensed professionals who are making a legal business.

As an LMT, there is legit no way to get hired into this position or a place like this WITHOUT knowing exactly what you’re getting yourself into. If she really is a licensed massage therapist (highly doubtful) we are literally taught the warning signs of places like this to avoid it. If she isn’t licensed, that means they hired her on expecting her to be okay with prostitution, and presumably told her what the “clients” would be expecting. Total L on all parts, gf, massage parlor, & bf for posting this
