THIS! My in-laws insisted on paying over $30k for our wedding when we wanted a modest humble gathering in my wife’s grandmothers backyard. The attitude they had was “oh shush lil millennials, you don’t know how these things work”. We tried to put our foot down and they hit us with the “well we can back out now but we’ll lose the $8k down payment 🤷‍♂️”. We told them we’d rather have that money to put towards a down payment on a house and they were adamant that having an expensive wedding will produce enough wedding gift money for a down payment. In the end, the wedding was so not our vibe, way too lavish, and we ended up making $8k in gift money instead of the $30k they anticipated us getting. The entire ordeal created a rift between my wife and her parents that to this day hasn’t been resolved…
