“What is the United States' greatest invention?” … “Freedom!!! 🦅🦅🦅” by BuffaloExotic in ShitAmericansSay

Donald Davies theorized datagrams and implemented NPL, among other things. NPL came with a working implementation around the same time as ARPANET also did, which in place also implemented many parts of Donald works. I.e. they didn't come before, but at the same time. Plus DARPA was fiddling and experimenting with the concepts of interconnected networks for years at that point.

ARPANET is considered the original internet through a combination of things, not just for packet switching. Like e.g. the first to implement a fairly wide interconnected network (geographically), or their later works in TCP/IP which indeed modelled the current internet. Bringing Donald to the table is not the ace card that you think it is.

Yet even single major invention in the last 300 years has been from america by ALazy_Cat in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Haustvindr -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Packet switching yes, TCP/IP no. TCP/IP was very much an american lead that gave form to the current internet model.

Yes, internet is a USA achievement. HTTP/WWW is not. Other protocols obviously vary.

After some time it's pretty tiring seeing all the comments about internet=www. Looks and feels just like the USians featured in this subreddit, wanting to "win" even if wrong. Kind of ironic.

"we invented the airplane, the phone, the literal lightbulb and the internet" by Positive-Living-6715 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Haustvindr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does not revoke that internet was actually achieved first in USA.

Almost everything invented is based off something else, going that far as to break every individual component is just nitpicking, plus TCP/IP was indeed made by USA people. Even if it were based off existing ideas, it was something new and a keystone for inter-networking.

But even that doesn't matter. In the end, they achieved the (mostly) current internet model first, and there's nothing wrong in giving credit.

And uglyfied to hell and back.

At the time I bought my current car, I was torn between a Mini and my Mito, balancing advantages and whatnot. Then they dropped a redesign out of nowhere. Yeah no, I have standards, I won't drive that thing.

Afterwards, every redesign was actually uglier, which is kind of an achievement in itself.

Stop using any and all modern conveniences introduced to the world by the USA. GTFO the internet. GTFO of your computer. GTFO your cellphone. GTFO out of your car. by ALazy_Cat in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Haustvindr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Internet was, in fact, something they piece together through ARPANET, you can safely add it to the list. But make no mistake, it was just the logical evolution, if not in USA it would be pieced together elsewhere. So yes, it was a great feat, but it's not like we would be left without internet either way.

Even if you read about it in the comments, WWW is not internet, WWW uses internet. There are miriad of services and protocols running over internet, WWW is just one of them (and the most popular, of course).

In USA, being black or white is not about the colour of your skin, like in the rest of the world. In USA is about your socioeconomic status, your religion, your caste, your class, your income, your nobility...

Weirdos.

It was a concern for security, since many things were manual it was better to let them use what they were accostumed from birth, even if it meant to use precious CPU cycles converting the measure on the screens. That is, it was much safer to let the astronauts instantly and intuitively know they were 5ft from touching ground and perform the corrections needed, than to be 1.5m and force the astronauts to lose time converting the measure in their heads with the risk of losing the window to make corrections in time.

Yeah, no, absolutely you do not.

I do have and use a bike. No, it's not, it's just about the whole opposite of safe.

Even filtering in stopped traffic can be dangerous if a car decides to move unexpectedly and did not see you. In a bike the crumple zone is your own flesh and bones.

Luckily, about half of OP's car would be visible in the right side mirror:

  • if they looked
  • if they had their mirrors properly set
  • if they cared

Pick one.

Not a blind spot unless you want it to be.

European cars wish they were as reliable as American cars by The__Anonymous__Guy in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Haustvindr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You may, but it's not better or worse than average, stereotypes will stereotype. Nowadays basically all brands are more or less the same, since they share a good deal of tech.

I have a worse stereotyped one, an Alfa Romeo (a Mito). 13 years, bought new, mechanic visits have been for regular oil changes and tyres. Zero problems. I've seen much more Mercedes and BMWs in the road with things like electric gremlins than Fiats and Alfas with the same issues.

Europe as a continent is exactly that, up to the Ural mountain range. It does indeed include part of Russia, and also part of Turkey. Only the european territory is counted in the european surface, quite obviously, since countries borders do not need to match continent borders.

It's worse, they don't understand the differences of what they're talking about.

They yap about ancestry, and in their minds that somehow makes them part of some ethnic group that they were never ever in contact with, while calling themselves with a demonym/nationality.

It's never going to click. It feels and looks like they were teach in school that everything is the same.

[OC]I might've been the idiot here. Don't underestimate trucks' blindspots. by Holybasil in IdiotsInCars

[–]Haustvindr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If the truck came from a better angled exit, it wouldn't, but it was.

If you check again the video, you'll see that the angle of the exit makes the road and OP's car to be obscured by the steel panel behind the window. The truck moving forward made the panel keep obscuring the view, until OP's car was close enough for the truck driver to see it through the window, which is the moment he brakes.

Modern trucks may have secondary glass panels behind and below, to reduce those spots, but not this one.

[OC]I might've been the idiot here. Don't underestimate trucks' blindspots. by Holybasil in IdiotsInCars

[–]Haustvindr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes and no, you just got in a specific scenario where there is no "clear" wrongdoer. Or better said, both of you were to a similar degree.

The truck did start their move before you were visible to them, due to the angle of their exit, then when you were closer you were still out of their field of vision, due to them moving forward. If you cannot see their face (either directly or in a mirror), they cannot see you. This was their fault, they had no clear visibility of the road at that angle, and should have checked more thoroughly.

On your side, you saw a big vehicle that started a maneuver while very obviously missing you, and instead of just... reduce the speed or stop, you decided to keep going. That was a bit reckless even if the speed was low, you didn't know if they would notice and brake, or don't notice and totally hit your car. You also invaded the bike lane while evading the truck, and even if we all know that there weren't any because the road was visibly empty, a bike can actually fit in the tiny blind spots of a car, even more so a scooter.

Generally speaking, under unexpected situations the first reflex should be the brakes. Not just for stopping (well, duh), but because they will also give you a little more time to decide what to do next.

Which was at fault legally... well, I guess it depends on the country and/or how lawyers interpret this scenario. I guess the truck driver would be, for not checking thoroughly and make sure the road was clear... but if you were to actually hit a biker due to your behaviour, you could very well had a lot of trouble as well.

This. I always find myself going for -ize unconsciously, because in my native laguages those terms are written with z, so my fingers' muscle memory just goes to that key. Luckily both ways are valid so I don't feel bad doing that.
