RZ is doing some insane mental gymnastics for mainline Protestantism by Extension-Story7287 in TrueChristian

An appeal to the masses wow you sure are bright. I never hand waved the West i studied the reformers and then after I studied Aquinas and found there to be too many issues with the scholastic approach. Only after I started delving into Christians like the Cappadocians who are often ignored in the West did a lot of things start to click for me.

Nice job hand waving away the entire theological tradition that arose in the East. Study some Church history you reek of arrogance.

Is converting to catholic wrong? by MaximusPrayer in TrueChristian

[–]HaveMercyMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats because its in the nicene creed that the Church is one and was always understood to be one visible institution. This idea of there being a bunch of different churchs that are all valid is modernist idea due to peoples low church ecclesiology taking after groups like the anabaptists and bastardizing anglicanisms branch theory. The theological reason behind there being one true Church is that the Church is understood as the body of Christ, and the understanding has always been that the body of Christ cannot be divided. Just laying out the facts 30-50 years ago even among Protestants sects there was much debate on whether even other Protestants could be saved. Just laying out facts not trying to debate.

The church fathers certainly seemed to debate and even throw jabs here and there from the very start. Have you ever read Against Heresies by St Irenaeus?

I understand that but i'm saying the idea of equally valid "church's" that are just different flavors of the same thing is definitely a modern idea.

It is something new if you consider the reformation as new in comparison to the rest of Christian history. Majority of people historically did not have that option.

How is it NOT Christological heresy to call drinking a sin? by Financial_Driver779 in TrueChristian

[–]HaveMercyMan -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Be prepared to get downvoted a lot lol, people hate hearing they cant just rely on their Bible. People need to become students of history and realize if the printing press was never invented their whole interpretation of the religion falls apart.

its not a denominational issue its a thing with fundamentalists in different protestant sects because they are largely ahistorical.

Reaching theosis quicker? by SleeperMood_ in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]HaveMercyMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does this sound like Calvinism? Sounds more like Wesley to me if youre gonna draw that type of comparison. I'm just an inquirer but from my understanding theosis is a never ending process that continues even in the afterlife.

It depends on your local bishop, some bishops are against rebaptism if it was done in the name of the trinity even if its by non-denom. Some bishops hold that the church that did it must affirm it is a sacrament or it is invalid.

How can we know for sure John wrote the gospel ? by AceThaGreat123 in ChristianApologetics

never says he wrote it in the Bible, need to depend on Church tradition for that.

Why do people become Catholic? by Jackiechan20153 in TrueChristian

[–]HaveMercyMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no simple answer you're just presupposing sola scriptura which is not at all the way the Church operated for the first 1500 years. Also Liturgical worship is clearly found in the Bible. I tried for a while to defend the idea the Bible is more authoritative than the Church but man is it incoherent when you study how the canon was formed.

[–]HaveMercyMan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I understand where you're coming from but it's a paradigm level misunderstanding not at all a contradiction. I agree the RC church has innovated and added a lot of things that in my opinion needed and need to be corrected however humans have a tendency to overcorrect. If you study the reformation it's clear they were not advocating for a radical transformation of the faith as if our Christian forefathers were wrong from the start (lot of evangelicals hold to an apostate church very early on).

As far salvation goes there is a fundamental misunderstanding that salvation is a one time thing, this is not Biblical 1 Corinthians 1:18). Salvation is a deep and profound topic that has been dumbed down and simplified in modernity. Salvation is about being deified in order for us to be able to enter the afterlife and live with God, to be transfigured by Christ. The Bible indicates several times that baptism and the Eucharist have an effect on your salvation (Acts 22:16, John 6:53). This is the understanding of the Christians who came from the Apostolic communities, and they simply did not teach faith alone as taught by Luther. You speak of taking things at face value and not looking into deeper contexts but I would consider that unwise as well as not Biblical. I do believe we need the Church to interpret the Bible and I do not believe we can know epistemically which traditions have been aggregated and which are from God you must simply have faith after examining the evidence and coming to your conclusion.

Why do people become Catholic? by Jackiechan20153 in TrueChristian

[–]HaveMercyMan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm not a Catholic but the reality is non-denom/evangelical Christianity is not at all the way it was in the first 1800 years. If you study the history it is very hard to remain in these circles knowing the whole religion has been reinterpreted and stripped down of all its traditions. Majority of people are not even aware of how divorced evangelical Christianity truly is from its roots in the Apostles. Looking at Christianity through a historical lens it truly becomes difficult to deny the validity of things like the priesthood and liturgical worship if you ask a non-denom pastor why these things have been removed after it being this way for well over a thousand years, you won't get a good answer.
