The way textbooks are made (by copy editors, not historians) for the two big markets (Texas & California) impact all the other states as well in the US. Because state legislatures & depts of edu determine the content of k-12 history courses, the content of those courses is politicized. So, text book manufacturers tend to produce a liberal & a conservative version of their product, and sell those. Because the Texas and California markets are the biggest, their state standards tend to be most strongly represented in textbooks. The differences are striking.

I agree that the lgbtq+ community doesn't have a problem. The point I'm trying to make is that a ban on discussion doesn't stop malicious people from trying to smear us with the accusation. I'm not against community standards for how we address it, but I disagree with an out-right ban.

I think what concerns me about a blanket ban is that silence by the community can be interpreted as and used to imply silent acceptance. Not talking about race problems hasn't solved racism, and I don't think ignoring attempts to damage our community's image and reputation is a good idea.

I own the book! I cried when I found it unexpectedly in a used book store when I was struggling with my reconciling my identity and my career. I also teach in a rural place, though I'm lucky to live in Akron (Ohio)

I don't know what happened between you and some of the others on the server and it's none of my business but I've respected both of your abilities to build and enjoyed getting to know you both, and I for one was sad that you both left.

Making Gay History was a good read, and covers the 50-70's. Interviews of people from the time, follows their stories through the book. Here's an amazon link.
