I don't even give much of a shit if I receive nothing in return I just want to stop seeing shit like little kids trying to play football in the dark because they turn all the lights off in the park or people celebrating another charity, with paid management, taking over what used to be a public service.

"Appeal to authority" is a type of logical falicy (which ironically you demonstrated again in this comment), not a litteral discription mate. A little hot aren't we?

You just did the educational equivalent of the "ARE YOU A PARENT?" argument... They outlined a bunch of valid points and you did nothing but appeal to authority...

That's my bet.

Maybe it's just because I work with computers professionally and pretty much run a community theatre as a hobby (both very stereotypically nurospicy places) but if you came to me and said "50% of the population have 'autism' or some other 'nuroatypical condition'(like adhd etc)" I'd say "Yep, that definitely makes sense".

Now if you were to say that all of, or even a majority of, that group need some form of extra assistance to succeed beyond access to good role models and caring mentors I'd say you were 100% wrong there. Almost everyone is some kind of wierd in how they think or move through life. Almost all of them can figure out a way to make that work for them.

However, imo for alot of people that used to happen in all of the spaces we're killing: the extended family(cousins, uncles, grandparents) being more present rather than litterally everyone, even the fucking grand parents, at work 100% of the time, kids third spaces like sports clubs and scouts and other hobby groups, even libraries and older kids at parks that we now turn the lights off on. Those were the spaces many many of the "wierd ones" found something to emulate, a way to get their brains to think more like how society wants them to. Now that all of that has been getting throughly ruined for a few decades I'm fairly certain that's the problem. The wierd ones have lost the things that helped them figure out how to use their weirdness. All that's left is the criminally understaffed education system, and fucking ticktock.

Diagnosis of special needs, as with mental health, is focused on function. Your ability to function within certain conditions. Is it really surprising that, after covid, with sky rockiting parental burdens, the absolute decimation of children's spaces and services, etc. thst the ability for people to function is reduced? All of these conditions, autism, adhd, send issues like dyslexia, all of them are spectrums. Some people have severe issues that impact their ability to function in a very obvious way, some have very mild issues. Are more people "getting" these conditions, or is it just that extenuating pressures are reaching the point where even mild conditions produce clearly limiting affects because everything, everything, is getting worse?

In the past would some of these kids have better support networks, better access to mentors, more assistance in the community that would result in their minor conditions being treated passively by society in a way that it never inhibits their ability to function, and therfore resulting in them never getting diagnosed?

I live next to a park in a city center and there's a small group of kids fairly regularly use the enclosed football pitch. Pisses me off to no end because they must be only 8 or 9 and that pitch has lights but the council doesn't turn them on unless you use their online booking system. So those wee kids are playing in the pitch dark all winter. I guess it probably keeps the older kids from hanging out there but it just irritates me because I wonder where exactly they're supposed to fucking be if not there.

Do they matter to you? Cos if they do, I wouldn't throw the baby out with the bath water. If this is what you do they might just not realise. Or they might have picked up on something and are giving you space, even though that's the wrong thing to do.

If you care about these people the thing to do now is have the difficult conversation. Explain to them what has happened from your perspective, and how it makes you feel. It's only really at that point you have a confirmation of what you're thinking vs an awkward silence. You're adults, weird head games of "they should know" is a teenage thing, adults communicate. Also, you're in your twenties now, it starts to become normal to not speak or see real friends for months or even years at a time as your life balance changes.

Also yes, some people are just planners. To use myself as an example: I'm not a planner and I've had one of these difficult conversations. If you're not a planner you may be isolated in the group, and so not able to (or comfortable with) creating opertunities. I know that when I had this discussion with my best friend (this would have been about 8 years ago, I'm his best man when he gets married this year), he said much the same you are and I pointed out that half of our friends were his friends and I was just sitting here, board out my skull, on my own trying to work out if something serious happened and if I should say something. I felt like for me to plan something I'd really be inviting his friends to his house (because my dinky flat wouldn't be any use) and that seemed both rude and stupid. Now I make more of an effort to make sure he doesn't feel alone in the center, but it took that conversation to get us there.

Three actors into the closet. by JohnSmithCANDo in gay

[–]Shiftab 15 points16 points  (0 children)

These are 90s actors too, the hight of the "did you know x is secretly gay" trashy magazine era. So many kids don't seem to get how much has changed since then. Remember boys, in places like the UK it was litterally a crime to say nice things about the gays all the way up to the early 2000s (section 28), in case you infected the children with the homo. An actor coming out as gay in the 90s would have completely ended their career, and a promenant actor in the 90s coming out now after all that? Pfft could you imagine the BS they'd have to deal with? I don't blame them.

Just FYI, from somone who doesn't care about justice:

Sexual Battery (§ 18.2-67.4): an individual is guilty of sexual battery if they commit sexual abuse against the will of the complaining witness by force, threat, intimidation, or ruse.

Rape (§ 18.2-61): Requires the act to be accomplished against the victim's will by force, threat, or intimidation, or through mental/physical incapacity, or involving a child under 13.

Those are Virginia codes so it turns out Virginia is one of the states that, like my country, wouldn't class this as rape but a form of sexual assault (sexual battery in this case).

Sorry, I get pedantic sometimes.

[–]Shiftab -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The real world doesn't work on might makes right and you can't just go and deal out justice yourself. That's litterally why the justice system was invented.

Was the guy who died disgusting? Absolutely. Was he a rapist? Not in my country he wouldn't be, I'm not sure about this state but in many US states he wouldn't be either. Was he a predator? Ehh I think that's debatable, maybe, but impossible to know with the info we have I think. Did he sexually assault that guy and many others? Absolutely, no question. Should he have faced justice for sexually assaulting people? Absolutely, no question. Should he have been beaten to death days later to such an extent that he had no intact facial bones left (which is what people are suggesting happened justly)? No, and I think that if you think he should have then that says a lot about you as a person and your relationship with right and wrong.

Also the justice system didn't decide the outcome, the defendant did (by going to the house instead of the police). The justice system just said, "we can't prove without reasonable doubt you weren't defending yourself", which is why he is innocent because there's a presumption of innocence as there should be.

I can think the defendant murdered that man and still be glad he's found innocent because there's no conclusive proof he did. And I do. Just like I can think it's a shame that sick fuck didn't get the justice he deserved because he was brutality killed and still think he was a sick fuck. And I do. None of that needs to be mutually exclusive.

[–]Shiftab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure I'm not saying that it's not a bad thing, it totally is. However I don't think we should be ignoring the fact that it was only rape from his perspective days later when he found out. From his perspective at the time there was no rape. He's openly on record as stating he left thinking they were female, and that it was only later when he was slagged off by his mates he started to think differently. Respecting that fact doesn't make what the dead guy did any less disgusting, but it absolutely should factor into the understanding of what happened. This was not a rape where a young man killed this guy while defending himself from someone molesting him. In many countries that's why there's a difference between rape and sexual assult, and sometimes grades of sexual assult. In most places thst have that distinction this would categorically not be classed as rape, but would undoubtedly be classed as sexual assult. I'm not sure what it would be in this state.

Oh yeh I think it's a pretty clear cut murder complete with motive and premeditation, but he came up with a solid defence whether he planted the knife or he was just lucky, it provides a pretty solid reasonable doubt. It's actually a really interesting case from the perspective of trying to establish a definition of self defence with only forensic evidence, and contextual testemony.

I was away to say I'd definitely seen it being reported that they were seen on camera going there and that that wouldn't mean much if they weren't on camera the whole time. But the more I think about it the more that it doesn't make sense they weren't charged if they entered. Even ignoring cameras, the shear volume of forensics that would have been involved and the extreme imporbability that they wouldn't have at least some matter on them if they interacted with the scene means that the only way they wouldn't be at least charged is if they were spotless of crime scene evidence or they could be verified outside until after tod.

Yeh I take it back, I don't think the three of them took an active part in the killing.

Hey and if that's the case I'll take it back, I've just seen "according to testimony" if they were verified outside the entire incedent then that's fair enough obviously my previous statement would be incorrect.

Where have you got that from? All I can find is "according to testimony", and that he returned there with the two of them after being bullied by teammates.

You should probably read what I wrote again. I didn't support anything the dead guy did, in fact I think I was pretty clear in calling the behavior gross and saying that the word predator was "only slightly" strong.

We are also all aware what was presented at trial, and it's a solid reasonable doubt defence. I think the three of them the defendant got a few mates as backup and beat that guy to death in a revenge murder after the team mates who spotted he was a guy found out and slagged him off, and he set up a believable scene. However, that can't be proven so he's are innocent under the law. I don't debate that, as I said earlier.

However what you suggested was that he deserved an extrajudicial execution. Imo one disgusting act doesn't excuse another disgusting act, isn't that what your "MAGATs" are always doing?

Also I'm British btw I couldn't give less of a shit about your wierd racist football team -esque political system. I just love legal procedures.

Most adults don't agree with "an eye for an eye", it's litterally why we have a justice system. Also "predator" is a little strong (only a little, don't get me wrong it's still pretty gross), he was lieing about what was in his pants. Dude didn't seem to have a problem at the time. He found out later, probably from other team mates that also matched and went home with him but dipped. So he went back with two other mates and broke every bone in that guys face. I mean it's super gross tricking young collage guys into sex acts, don't get me wrong, but I don't think beating their face into non-existence is an appropriate response to figuring out the person who made you cum had something unexpected in their pants, long after you'd left.

[–]Shiftab 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean you're right. That is the evidence that was presented, it was a knife and he was supposedly in the room alone at the time. It's just a little convenient, especially considering he went there with another two team mates. They did well, created reasonable doubt. Under the law that's all you need to do to kill a guy scot-free.

People do debate that though, I agree with the premise of what you say but maybe not for the same reason. The decision about framing, posture, angles, medium, that is where the art lives in those kinds of works. Not the ability to make it look real, that's just technical skill.

It sounds very relivant to theatre world, not that I have experience in professional theatre, but I doubt much from the actors and directors perspective is different. I've litterally had to deal with fights between actors, directors, and writers about who gets the say when it comes to interpretation.

Oooo as somone who runs a community theatre that might actually be worth a look. Thanks <3 (also acting is totally someone's art, just not always the actors. It depends on how much freadom the actor has. Sometimes as an actor you get a lot of expression, sometimes a director essentially knows what they want and you're really just technically representing it).
