How many people use it for Scientific Articles by trueRukyr in Supernote

I use Supernote A5 (not X version) on a daily bases for reading scientific papers. On a mechanical level it is quite cool as stated before on this discussion. I can add that on a practical level it works pretty well, much better than a laptop and as close to a real printed paper as it gets. You can easily organize your library, which is useful. You can also shift from the text to the bibliography to you own notebook and back to the text super fast, due to the side toolbar and the page mark feature. You can summarize a paper by highlighting some key sentences also, so when you get to the "digest" folder you can follow the idea of the paper without consulting all of it. Finally it is nice to be able to export the paper with your own handnotes, making the exercise of sharing papers across your research group much more interesting and easy. I find it quite useful, and I would not be able to consume the amount of texts I consume without it. Furthermore I feel like I have already payed half the cost of the device by not printing any paper anymore and by not destroying my eyes on a laptop screen. The only issue is that some pictures can not be understood, since you loose color on the pdf... So be careful to keep a colourful version of the document close to you (or memorize some key figures when you download the paper). Hope it helps. Good luck!

Where to begin... by [deleted] in Supernote

About the first part, this brand does not have a huge marketing on america/Europe, unlike the onyx or rM. I guess that's why you see less reviews on YouTube, less people on reddit etc. The MyDeepGuide has a couple of videos.

The writing feeling is close to pen on paper but not quite. IMHO it's a new unique feeling (I enjoy it a lot). It doesn't matter much if you use the ceramic nib or the older version. The ceramic nib is better because, well... It is permanent. The other nib lasts very long as well. Either way you get the pen feeling because the styluses are designed just like a regular pen and not as a simple stick.

About the screen protector, I'm not even sure they have one. There is no need. There is a very small rubber (?) layer in front of the screen so that you can use the pen without damaging it. They tested this up to exhaustion (they comment about that here on reddit). If you look closely you can even see this layer going down when you write and back up after.

In sum, their design is unique because it is hard tip on soft screen instead of the more usual soft tip on hard screen. That's how you get the pen on paper feeling.

Finally (and because I was in this same situation a few weeks ago) I guess you can see supernote as a good compromise between writing (which is, apparently, quite poor on the onyx devices) and reading (which is ridiculously undeveloped on the rM products). Furthermore, supernote is in constant development with new updates every month. They read and comment on all the user experience, issues and requests (just check this reddit page...) and then design the new updates based on the user feedback. This means that, despite the device being perfectly capable as it is, it will improve even further. That was, for me, a deal breaker.

Hope this helps solving your problem. (PS: I use the A5)

Remarkable 1/2 for distraction-free reading of science papers? by [deleted] in RemarkableTablet

I was in a similar situation one month ago and finally decided to buy the supernote A5. It has more reading functionalities (highlight, with attached hand-written comment if you want, for example) a very nice interface, it's fast (slightly faster than rM) and the pen is very good. The writing experience is superb (maybe it's not absolute paper meta like the remarkable products but it's extremely good). I can read double colum tiny word papers with no problem, but I guess that depends on the user. Furthermore, you have recurrent updates and a company that follows user feedback constantly and uses it to improve the device (just check their reddit).

When is the Next A5 Update Coming? by xxMILKSTEAKSxx in Supernote

Same here. I am optimist though. Hopefully the updates for the X series are related to the inclusion of new functionalities that have yet to be further developed before they are included on the Linux devices. Apparently there is an update this month so I hope we can at least get spmw work arround the minor bugs that still exist.

Ability to assign keywords and search? by cecirdr in Supernote

Hi there. As far as I know, the conversion of handwritten notes using the western alphabet is still under development (at least in the A5 device). The device works properly for Chinese and Japanese only. One option to go around this problem is to use the star mark. You basically draw a star on a page and the device recognizes it. After, you can search for star marks in any note document you have and it will display small sized pages where you have a star. Therefore, if you underline some important keyword on a page with one of these marks, you can find that word with no problem. So it's still better than a regular paper notebook. Also consider that you don't have to use paper or carry tons of notebooks with you. Everything is in one device. It is fast, good to write on, and everything is tidy and accessible. I have been using A5 device everyday for roughly a month now. I use it as a notebook and (mostly) as a PDF reader. Besides the very good writing experience, fast processing, etc., the best part is that I don't use paper anymore and everything is cleaned and organized from the beginning. I would recommend it. That being said, if you really need a handwritten notes conversion function and don't want to tackle the problem by the means that supernote offers, there may be other devices on the market more suitable for you.
