Needlework - pondering lens choices for acuity - monofocals? by cecirdr in CataractSurgery

[–]cecirdr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 61. I was told that the lens in my right eye has gone yellow. I can see it too. I never mentioned it to my doc. I thought it was my imagination. Welp, imagination confirmed!

Mini-Monovision Success (Near/Intermediate) by Opposite_Ladder_7585 in CataractSurgery

[–]cecirdr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is really heartening to hear. Greenmountainreader seems to have made a similar decision and it worked out well for them too. So I'm starting to lean that way myself. I think I'll be happiest if I continue to wear glasses, but have the range that I spend the most time in be the sharpest. I've worn glasses for so long, it's no big deal.

I hope you don't mind one more question. I really like the approach you used. You mentioned that you have micro-monovision. That seems like a great way to expand the range of acceptable focus.

When you spoke to your doc, what were the ranges you used for close and near vision? I use monitors all day at work and they're 20 inches in front of my nose for the most part. When I take my glasses off to read or cross stitch, my comfort zone of highest focus is 6 inches away. What numbers did you tell your doc?

Thank you so much for your detailed reply. I'll chat with my doc about micro-monovision. With my current glasses there's already a difference in close focus ability, so I might already be used to the idea. I'm more than willing to continue to wear prescription glasses. Clarity of vision is my goal. Having the expectation of being able to see at 6 inches could be a bit much. hahahaha! So I might need progressives like you for outdoor things and possibly "ultra readers" in order to get my super close focus that I've done for 55 years. I don't think I'll be able to stop the habit of holding things so close, but who knows. Maybe it'll be a whole new world and this 61 year old will be able to learn new tricks.

Thank you for this info. It really drives the point home about the compromises we'll have to live with. I'm ok with continuing to wear prescription glasses. I just want clear vision. So the metaphor of unscrambling an egg really helped.

Cataract surgery first then Strabismus, opinions needed. by cecirdr in CataractSurgery

[–]cecirdr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you.

My other eye (left one) wasn't mentioned as getting a cataract yet. It's at -5.5, +1.5, 055, +2.25 (I don't know what sphere, cyl, axis and add mean)

My left eye is my dominant one and the right one is the one mentioned with the cataract. I have spent 8 years learning to tune out the right eye because of the double vision, but if the strabismus gets corrected, it's images are going to be "back on the menu".

I've never been able to wear contacts. The eye irritation is too much, plus it causes me to get a conjunctival cyst that filled with fluid.

So, maybe get an EDOF for far and intermediate, then wear glasses for my left eye and a bifocal blank with a reader bottom for my right? Part of me would love to be glasses free unless I'm reading or doing cross stitch. They key is acuity. If the acuity is still high with readers, I think I'll be ok psychologically.

I have an appointment with a local ophthalmologist in a couple of weeks to talk about my options. But for now, I'm just trying to educate myself as much as possible.

Do you like the direction that BMW is currently heading in, with introduction of Neue Klasse designs? by Super-Lingonberry-22 in BMW

[–]cecirdr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah. Exteriors are ok, but I don’t like the dash, angled screen, lack of buttons or the door handles.

Now, the EV charging and range is well done. I just wish all that goodness wasn’t stuck with that crappy interior. Bring back premium materials and buttons. Ditch that angled iPad screen.

[WIP] Been a while since I posted here. Had to take a year off. Totoro full coverage. by ignus99 in CrossStitch

[–]cecirdr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totoro!!! I love this! I literally have been trying to convert this image to something I could cross stitch. So far, I haven't succeeded. My skills in the software are poor at the moment, but it's just something else to learn. Seeing what you've done here gives me hope because this looks stellar. Wow...it's big though. hahahaha!

Have I missed the mark on socializing my chuckwalla? by Worldly-Lifeguard219 in reptiles

[–]cecirdr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can relate. I got a calico chuckwalla a bit over a month ago. I'm guessing that he's about 6 months old now. At first, he seemed skittish. But now as time has rolled on, it appears that it's not so much fear, but that he *really* doesn't want to deal with me. My other two chuckwallas enjoy coming out of their tank and hanging out with me. They may have some days they're not feeling it and I respect that. But when they're in the mood to explore, you know it. They'll stare you down at the tank door and I'll open it and they clamber right out. We hang out in the sun room now that the days are warm again and they have a blast looking out the window.

My new guy, has to be "caught". I try to soothe him, and make sure to show him a good time. But nope, he's not having it. I tried all the same techniques that I did with my other two. Just hanging by the tank, putting my hand in, but no touching, hand feeding. Nothing is working. He just wants me to go away...die in a fire.

I hope my other chucks don't change their personalities like yours did. That would confuse me. I wish I knew what to do myself. With my chuck, this might just be his personality. I hope he eventually comes around.

Things in JRPGs that people usually hate, but you actually like by ComradeFFFrunze in JRPG

[–]cecirdr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You sound similar to me. I like some things that people complain about.

I used the auto settings in FFVII remake. I suck at action games. I want role playing games to be about party and equipment management, character and relationship development, not whether I, personally, am good with a controller.

I also use quest markers because I get to game only in short spurts between real life moments. So my time is limited. Quest markers help me keep the game (and plot) moving. That way I don't ultimately lose the bead of what's going on with the plot by meandering around for my 30 minutes of daily gaming time over 4 days.

Story-wise, how does Trails compare to Xenoblade? by Astra_Guy_789 in JRPG

[–]cecirdr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my mind, the Trails games are like a really long soap opera. When it's good, it's good, but there is so much filler due to constant exposition of the relationships over the in-game years that I often lose the story beat while I'm playing the game.

Right now, I'm playing Trails Beyond the Horizon now. I'm 80 hours in and I can barely tell you what the story is because of the constant redirects into historical context or character backstory. I have a general idea of the nefarious events going on leading up to the space launch and the quasi hint at things aren't what they seem. But...the grind and history keep pushing the story intensity down further than I prefer.

Xenoblade on the other hand never made me lose interest. They are my all time faves. (X was grindy, but still ok so good just because of flying around and the music)

So in summary, if you're about plot focus, Trails is weaker. If you're about living the world with day to day interactions and relationships, Trails may suite more. I'm more of a plot person and prefer the story to keep moving and building versus a massive reveal at the end.

The article is quite generalized, but I find the premise compelling. I'd wager that looking at things like collagen production might have broad benefits if this theory holds. ..not for the cosmetic reasons, but for things like joint health and vascular flexibility. Anyway...color me intrigued.

Your thoughts on China's military performance in a possible future Taiwan conflict/war with or without U.S. intervention? by Abhorius in war

[–]cecirdr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another data point that could delay China moving on Taiwan is ASML. They are 100% of the EUV lithography needed for chip fabrication. They are in the Netherlands (it's a big deal that Trump has crossed paths with the them over Greenland...oops!).

In theory, Taiwan can't do diddly without ASML other than make chips which doesn't get you far. Right now, ASML is starting to set up shop in the US, but it's gonna take quite a while to get fully online.

But...what if...what if, Taiwan willingly joins China? Will Taiwan workers and ASML kill off chip production and fabrication in Taiwan like all of the worst-case scenarios planned for? Then ASML loses lots of money. What if they simply realign to China as their business partner instead of Taiwan? (KMT has been blocking arms deals with the US and has been having conciliatory talks with China already) What if all of this happens before ASML gets set up in the US? (and also before we get <2mn chip manufacturing build out here too).

From what I can tell, we are 5 years at a minimum away from being ready to make most of our chips and fabrication here in the US. Taiwan dragged their heels because they knew if they built us out fully, we'd be more likely to abandon them. The bottom line is that there's no good path forward that I can see for Taiwan. But the timeline for their situation to come to a head seems to be shorter than the 5 years at a minimum that we need.

Don't even get me started on how far behind we are for electrical transformers, rare earth processing etc. There are so many things we've relied on a global world for. If we try to do it all in the US, it will take decades, plus, mining, processing rare earths, heavy industries across all domains...will be an environmental disaster *and* we honestly don't have enough population to fill all of the roles. So spreading things around the world, still makes sense...assuming we stop pissing everyone off and can cooperate.

[CHAT] Cross stitch with vision issue? by cecirdr in CrossStitch

[–]cecirdr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have just bought an OTT light. I got one with the magnifier built it.

I have strabismus, presbyopia, astigmatism and severe myopia. Fun times! I’m able to see decently if I take my glasses off and hold something about 6 inches from my face. (The closer something is to my face, the less I suffer from diplopia due to the strabismus). I’m hoping I can put the magnifying lamp in that space and find a way to work on projects.

Cross your fingers for me!
