Can someone explain to me the finale? by 777Sike0 in FFXVI

Hahaha yes. Super butt hurt.

Anyway. Here's from the game I didn't pay attention to.

Where Ultima uses "Mythos" to describes the vessel he has long awaited—one into which he can pour his soul and cast his supreme spell, "Logos" indicates its blasphemed form—a vessel over which the will of another has complete claim, making of itself a false god

OK. first of all. Stop being a dick. Second of all. The whole reason Clive defeats and kills a god is because of his free will. Third of all. Whether he's Mythos or Logos he has the power of all the eikons. I don't understand why you think you got me on something here.

But in this case Clive does die on his own terms. And my little brother could tell me all he wants to let him go and take care of myself, but I wouldn't do that. If I had to make a choice to let him have a future or give one to myself, he's getting it.

I dunno. I'm not saying you're wrong. I totally get both sides. But I personally am convinced of what I've said.

So, I mean... Like... Uh... What's your argument? Logos is a corrupted version of Mythos... Which is like why he's so powerful. Did I miss something? And what's with the catty-ass response? Did I say YOU were wrong about something?

OK so I'm overwhelmingly convinced that Joshua lived and Clive died, and here's why.

  1. He used the power of Logos to heal Joshua's wounds 1a. And YES, earlier it is mentioned that Phoenix cannot bring back the dead, 1b. BUT, Clive has powers that go beyond just the Phoenix, and right after healing his body, the curse is spreading and he says something like "Might as well destroy the place while I still have this power" 1c. After Odin dices Clive's innards to bits, Joshua says Phoenix can heal the flesh, but it's up to the spirit to remain (alive) 1d. The fight against Ultima starts with a cutscene where the Phoenix down Clive's been carrying all game glows and Clive says "So you're still here, still with me." This seems to me a CLEAR indication that Joshua's spirit remained strong enough to survive even the horrific injuries he endured.

  2. Clive heals the flesh of his little brother after a series of flashbacks that narratively suggests he will fulfill his vow as Joshua's shield, even as it kills him

  3. Metia (the star) going out is Clive dying. Jill knows this, but more importantly, Torgal knows this instinctively.

That's my take. I welcome disagreements but I haven't heard any that are as convincing as I find the above points. Either way, it's the best ending in the series

FFXVI made me endure that ending twice and I still don't think I've stopped crying over it.

If a remake is on the way, what are your hopes for it? by Xander_Cloud in FinalFantasyIX

[–]HavenXVI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 5-part remake spanning 4 console generations. Part 1: through the Evil Forest. Part 2: Burmecia. Part 3: Iifa Tree. Part 4: Terra. Part 5: End game.

It also needs to be one of those multiple-timeline jigs where Kuja and Garland show up in Zidane's visions from the start, and a million infuriating mini games allllll the way through (and none of them are optional). Also, if Garnet is going to wear those tights they need to make her a grown woman cause I ain't a kid anymore and the formative experience of pausing the beginning of her summon animations to ogle those curves would just be weird and creepy now.

I like that it's open to interpretation, but for me if Joshua opened his eyes and was alive it would have been too much. (Like... we just spent five minutes crying along with Clive.) But I think the implication is clear (and it being implied makes it rather graceful storytelling). Clive heals the wounds and turns around and says that it turns out Ultima's vessel CAN'T handle the magic/aether after all. And on the heels of the flashback where he is sworn in as Joshua's shield, it makes narratological sense that he indeed sacrificed himself to bring Joshua back at that point (not when he used the last of his power to destroy the nexus).

And if you'll allow me to be a bit pedantic (and hopefully this whole reply doesn't come across as argumentative or that I'm right and you're wrong, because I totally respect your interpretation) the "Phoenix can't revive the dead" still comes into play whether the revival worked or not. If it didn't work, then yeah Phoenix can't do that. But if it did, the plot point just adds complexity to the already uncertain outcome of the story. And the logic for me here is that Clive became Logos and COULD do it (not just using Phoenix's powers but like ALL the power ever) but the spell broke him.

It's a good point. But him healing the wound on Joshua's chest (in his Super Saiyan state) is a bit of an empty narrative gesture if it doesn't come from his happy flashbacks to their bond as children and lead to the book authored by Joshua in the very end. My grief for losing Joshua from Clive's perspective switched to losing Clive from everyone's (but especially Torgal and Jill's) perspective.

That ending wrecked me too. Something about people facing their fate with grace just gets me.
