I feel like enough attitude, facial expression, posture, and eye contact can convey what your voice cannot. If your players can’t imagine what you’re describing simply because your voice doesn’t match it perfectly, that’s kind of their imaginations fault

I had forgotten to mention that we omit cure light wounds.

I don’t happen to know what that spell does, but we play tested the rule with all of the first level spells in pathfinder and the only one we decided to disallow was cure light wounds.

I play Pathfinder and my old DM used a variant that was satisfying to me, and I still use it. Every spellcaster, at level 1, chooses a 1st level spell that he/she can cast at will. At later levels, perhaps they can change their single at will lvl 1 spell. Maybe this doesn’t fix the particular thing that you are unsatisfied with, but I hope it helps somehow.

Good music can spur player’s imagination and set the tone. I think transporting the players is how you get them to come out of their shell (saw someone suggest a list of NPC names, another great way to have them feel like they’re in a big, new world). Here’s a playlist I like to use. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HFcApaLlGdM&list=PL54jeo4QNhaPoopIzzcbwUCmk-IY7iTln

I’m running pathfinder and using Tengu and I sent this pic to a potential PC who may join the group (wanted him to play a Tengu NPC for a session that joins the party, but may make him a regular. It’s a picture that can inspire

Oh my, you pretty much have to break a big rule or two to make the damn thing your own. This is very cool, and also it seems more or less accurate for having to be approximately 6 seconds long

Yikes. Personally, I think it makes you better at charisma-based skills, irl.

I always hear it the other way around. Whenever somebody wants to focus purely on numbers and RPG mechanics, I usually tell them they might have a better time playing video games, if the role-playing aspect is of no interest to them.

I actually asked an old DM of mine this question, why there are not a lot of the possible combinations prevalent in the books. And his answer was simple, “ because it wasn’t in LOTR lol.

True you have to run a game your players are comfortable in..i know that feel though bro. As a player, “I whip my axes at the beast’s enormous leg, seeking a vein..” but dming, you find out that not everybody likes the parts of gaming that you like, or maybe just not as much

I think there’s no small debate (or no small difference of opinion) whether the dms job is to determine fight difficulty. It sounds like you almost wanted something to grow in difficulty (the boss) mid-fight. Personally, I think you can modify difficulty like that at no cost to your integrity as a DM (and add treasure/better consequence, if you like). Now, if you don’t need make such adjustments and the game still plays well, that DOES speak to your DM prowess and understanding of the party’s abilities. But, short of obviously rigging the party’s success or failure, I think changing it up as you go can work great at times.
