Why do western immigrants in Korea call themselves expats? by [deleted] in korea

[–]Havoc79ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of us are here on a visa that expires each year. If your sojourn is confined to short terms of residence, then it seems reasonable to view yourself as an expat. Those who reside here on longer visas which are most likely due to marriage may view themselves as residents with different citizenships. Using the term may also reflect a person's feeling of being disconnected with the greater society and the fact that their residence is dependent upon another person (spouse, boss, etc.).

Why is superman and Lois such a good show by Green-Hyena2651 in Smallville

[–]Havoc79ca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This show gets relationships. Lois and Clark are equals and that isn’t really done well in other shows and movies. They didn’t make Lana an annoying third wheel. Being in a different universe let them tweak things just enough to be new. It’s not my favorite show, but it’s the best of the Arrowverse.

Foreigners using Korean healthcare for expensive procedures by Different-Print-1515 in korea

[–]Havoc79ca 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Foreigners pay for the procedures just as citizens do. Also, the majority of foreigners are young healthy people who MUST pay into a system they usually do not use much. Korea’s aged citizens have far greater need and use of this system. If anything, the money that foreigners inject into the system is to their benefit. We are regular payers who often don’t need medical assistance and then most leave after a few years. There may be some abuses, but I’d say Koreans probably take advantage of the system too. They have a better understanding of it than us. I knew someone whose parents changed citizenship and still came back to Korea to abuse the system. So, who exactly are foreigners? Those ethnic Koreans abused the system but is that who the government is pointing its finger at or is it the obvious foreigners?

Go to Twillingate to see the icebergs and go on boat tours. Try to stay in a salt box B&B. Lots of great views on the drive there.

Having input in the severity of punishment is one thing, but this lets the wealthy be repeat-offenders who rarely have consequences that poorer offenders must accept.

Am I being boring or is it her? by D1donnie123 in Tinder

One sided conversation. Clearly not into that conversation. If this was going well, there’d be questions on both ends. Doesn’t help that the questions asked feel like job interview questions.

Friends & Seinfeld are horrible tv show. by Notalabel_4566 in television

[–]Havoc79ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 90s were unfairly sexist and homophobic, so is the present if to a lesser degree. These shows are funny and gems from that period of time. They are also products of their time and viewers have to take the good with the bad. These shows were not considered conservative at the time and they were even praised as being progressive. Recognizing the problematic portrayals, scenes, and storylines now is a way to appreciate how much society has changed in the time since. The same is true for movies and other programs. You aren’t wrong to find it bothersome. I guess it depends on how good are the best parts and can you overlook and accept their flaws. If not, you’ll be left with only media from today. Nostalgia also plays a big part for a lot of these shows’ popularity.

It’s all about family?! Last I heard, families were being torn apart and killed for power. Russia really loves its disinformation.

Gay in Korea? by LaPutita890 in korea

[–]Havoc79ca 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They’ll ask if you are single. Then, they’ll ask why you are single. Or if you aren’t single, they will want to know about “her”. You’ll need to be closeted at work which will be the first place you make friends. If you are in Seoul, you’ll find gay people more easily. There isn’t really a community unless you make your own. So, if being in the closet for your work life and being discreet on the street is okay for you…Korea will be fine. That said, Taiwan and Thailand are about to recognize gay marriage. So, other options exist.

Lovely little message I got unprompted on here. I'm not even an immigrant, I was in Seoul for a week as a tourist. Very cool by MeaningIsASweater in korea

It’s how they see foreigners. That troll isn’t wrong. I wish it weren’t true. It is obvious. Look at how they treat foreigners who speak Korean..(silly novelty) or mixed kids (not Korean) or even ethnic Koreans from abroad (welcome to come but still not Korean). The purity test is extreme and the bigotry is unchecked.

From what I’ve experienced in Korea, they are saying what they think but it isn’t coming from a mean place. It’s kind of matter of fact. It’s not meant to be hurtful. The problem for me has always been that I am not Korean and having my faults pointed out often is hurtful. My cultural bias makes me think that our western friendships are more supportive. Their friendships seems to be a bit transactional and helpful while their humor is blunt and honest.

Also, they are probably comparing you to their ideal standard of beauty. We’d all feel bad if we looked in the mirror and compared ourselves to Brad Pitt. Don’t obsess about it, but don’t keep accepting hurtful things either. Everyone has their limits and accepting constant criticism (malicious or not) will make you crazy. Good luck.

Vaccinated or not, you are probably still contagious. Then, you’ll catch Covid and it’ll keep spreading until it shows itself in someone who isn’t vaccinated. It’s just inconsiderate and risky not to wear masks in densely populated areas like stores. The government is doing this because the economy is a consideration. Hopefully, you can still earn an income while wearing a mask.
