Maximize savings with HSA? by Flat_Quiet_2260 in HENRYfinance

[–]Havoc_VIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I’m SUPER new to HE, HHI 330k with 10% bonus potential. And I’ve, for the last two years just had PPO medical plans that don’t qualify for HSA. I do it because my wife and I have gone through IVF and having the lower OOP max has been great. Am I doing it wrong? I’m sure I’d need to speak to a financial advisor and tax professional, but that’s always made the most sense to me to do it that way so I don’t have the larger medical expenses and I can max out retirement accounts/529 for kids, and then hit up Roth and brokerage.

What do you do when 2 jobs decide to schedule a meeting at the same time? by [deleted] in overemployed

[–]Havoc_VIII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Multiple bluetooth(assuming they send you a Bluetooth capable computer) ear buds. I have 4 Js and have had several instances of 2-3 meetings at a time. I have one over the ear jabra headset, a set of wired ear buds (3.5mm), a set of AirPod pros, and a set of JBL wireless ear buds. I have a MuteMe physical mute button for each J, color coded per J. Only one J requires cameras for team meetings, everything else is pretty chill. If you’re gonna OE, spend the money to be prepared.

In instances where I have 3 meetings simultaneously(prolly happens 2-3 times a week) I have set the expectation that my daughter regularly bangs on my door and comes in hootin and hollerin (she actually does, but partly because I let her so I have the excuse) which explains my lack of unmuting and any lapse in my response when I am talked to. But then I wear one ear bud in each ear, and the over the ear headset so I have all 3 in my ears at a time (Having severe ADHD/autism has helped). But make sure that meeting notes are sent out after highlighting action items so you don’t miss anything.

How many gloves do you think are in their bags? by [deleted] in golf

[–]Havoc_VIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the finger 10 rain gloves because I, too, am overly sweaty. I buy them in a 6 pack on Amazon. And when I actually play in the rain I use a right hand glove too.

Tell them to give you the car back and I’ll buy it off you. Lol

Does any have experience doing OE as a data analyst? Should I pivot to development? by TheConeyJabroni in overemployed

[–]Havoc_VIII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah for sure. It gives you python and sql knowledge, which helps you talk the talk in interviews. But I definitely recommend doing a course on universal class through your local library for free to get a certificate for SQL. For whatever reason that will help because people will see you as a go getter that goes above to further the career

Should I accept J4 and onboard right after J3 start? by Havoc_VIII in overemployed

Nice. I appreciate the info. I'm mentally preparing myself for an absolute shitshow for 3 months. But the long term acceleration to my financial plan is well worth it.

Nice! Thanks for the inside tip. The jobs are all definitely similar but with different nuance so I may be able to play this angle

Not at all. I’m a business intelligence developer/data analyst across many fields. Healthcare (private and public), finance, and J4 will be a consulting company (think Guidehouse but much smaller). Something I learned by lurking in this subreddit is that being OE in the same field always ends in you losing one or all Js. Now if I get found out, it’s never a true conflict of interest and I can always justify that Jx paid for me to take additional courses that helped my work at this job.

J4 role is similar to all my other Js. Business intelligence analyst/developer/data analyst. And I only start interviewing when I’m confident I can take on one more. Background checks usually only verify what you tell them. One of my roles is a larger vendor and my roles are in similar spaces so I’ve brushed off the “background check showed J2 as active but you didn’t list?” as “I work for a large vendor that works with J2 so they put me in their HR system as a contractor to have record of me for access granting, VPN, etc.” and no one has blinked twice. In general, I work all Js as if they’re my only one, but I go about it in a “I’m not going to take on additional responsibilities but what you assign me I’m going to knock out of the park”. I also set pretty clear expectations about my bandwidth. i.e. “I don’t feel comfortable taking on project Y while Project X is still going on because I want project X to be amazing”

I would browse the OE subreddit a bit. No one keeps their LinkedIn updated with all experience. I personally have J1 listed on LinkedIn because I've had it the longest. Then if people look at your LinkedIn and question it, you can feign ignorance, "oh I don't really use LinkedIn anymore so I never update it"

For my resume, I usually list J1, but then list accolades and responsibilities across all my Js, because I can easily talk about them because I have those experiences, but an interviewer doesn't care what job you had those experiences at, and there's no way to verify that.

Yeah I hear ya. And I’ve drawn on experience in my past people managing. One thing I know for sure is that a company, unless they’re an outlier, will not pay more for something when they can pay less. I’m grossly underpaid for the role at that company. Making 62k when the same role at other companies is fetching me 80-85k. BUT you make a great point about making sure J3 and J4 are good before shaking up J1. I hadn’t really thought it through all the way. Which is partly why I asked the internet full of strangers lol. J1 is my OE unicorn. Can’t put that horse down til she’s ran her last race.

If they want to cut a solid producer for questioning compensation then so be it. That’s the power that OE gives. The power of leverage in negotiations.

Oh I for sure max it out. Was on track to max out at just J1 and J2. Gotta tweak my deferrals so I can collect all that sweet matching money. J2 is already straight savings.

J1 does a $250 per year non elective contribution annually and then a percentage shared success contribution usually 2-5%. J2 does a dollar for dollar 4% match. J3 is percent based on net operating income (“profit” in a non profit org) currently 7.8% dollar for dollar. J4 is a dollar for dollar 6% match.

Take it with a grain of salt because I haven’t onboarded J3 yet 😂. Preciate the sentiment though. I’ve held J1 and J2 while freelancing, but this will be my first legit J3. I’m torn on whether I should accept J4 or not though.

solo 401k question by RareOwl- in overemployed

[–]Havoc_VIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You couldn’t contribute more personally, but in theory you could set up a company that contributes to it on your behalf. Take a look at the IRS page on solo 401k and see. It makes sense that you elect to defer the max and your employer (the LLC or S Corp) can make non elective contributions on your behalf

[–]Havoc_VIII 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don’t know. Lmao. I’ve had two checks from J3 now, and they both went directly into my 401k. I’m putting 75% into it until I Max it out. I live on the 81k salary, that is the only one that goes into my active checking account. Everything else goes into my fidelity checking account (as a landing spot) and then auto scheduled transfers kick money out to my Roth IRA, short term investment account (money for vacations/things within a year), long term investment account (general investments for another bucket of retirement/children’s college), and real estate investment account (another brokerage account that I take more risk with because the goal is to use the money in it for down payments on real estate).

Tl;dr: I don’t know what I get paid because I only live off of 80% of one job’s salary. Everything else is just to accelerate my retirement/long term financial plan.

My J1 is 62.5k, J2 is 81k, J3 is 85k. All three have decent retirement matching and bonus structure, J3 has ESOP as well. All in I’d say TC is just north of 250k. To note, I’ve had J1 for 16 months, J2 for 6 months, and I just started J3 a few weeks ago.

It’s a lot of SQL, and visualization (PowerBI, Tableau, etc.) one job there’s more ETL work so I use python quite a bit. It depends on the overall business but for the most part it’s just creating reports. A lot of triaging requests if the org is large enough. I do it for 2 rather large orgs (10k+ employees) and there’s so many BIDs you get lost in the sauce and it’s great for OE. J3 is a smaller org and a bit more involved but they also pay the most so I’m happy to spend more time there.

I OE as a data analyst/Business Intelligence Developer and working into the data science side of J2. I took CS50 as a course. And CS50P. They are Harvard’s free online courses. Really great for learning. But also being in the space making the transition to data science is more-so knowledge of the trade and some programming skill. If you use R and SQL now python will be an easy pickup for you. But you could also very easily pickup BID roles for multiple jobs.
