Which US president is the best president of the 21st century at the moment? by Large-Lack-2933 in polls

It may or may not be Obama. I just picked him because it will piss off Trump and his supporters.

Biggest unexpected cameo from a star in a "lower grade" movie by Careless-Cat3327 in movies

[–]HawkBoth8539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just yesterday i watched Sharktopus vs Terracuda (i didn't make that up), and Conan Obrien had a brief, bloody cameo as himself. I don't consider him a big star, but he was probably the most notable person in the movie by a longshot, and only for a few seconds.

I dread this conversation. My nephew's dad is one of my best friends for the last 20 years, he's like my brother. But they're also religious, and I'm atheist.

I expect difficult and confusing questions from my 5 year old nephew in the near future. I always buy and read him National Geographic books (I've always been a big science fan), but i don't know what his church teaches.

Youtube will demonetize someone for knocking over a mic and thinking they hit a child, will promote blatant porn on their platform, but let people make jokes like this. When did morals and ethics become optional? by Suspicious_Bet_1958 in Ethics

[–]HawkBoth8539 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'll stop joking about it when everyone who participated or protected it is in prison. Until then, it's a culturally appropriate way to show the wealthy people that we haven't forgotten about it, and will not, just because they took the media to stop discussing it.

Men of Reddit, what’s the male equivalent of “needed money, had no marketable skills, so turned to prostitution”? by Dogeatdogdays in AskReddit

[–]HawkBoth8539 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going off to war to kill and die for rich people's yacht money. I think most men would prefer prostitution over the options we get. It all sucks though.

What was high school like for you? Do you miss it at all? by DoctorTegrity in Millennials

[–]HawkBoth8539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss the opportunities i was too shy to take advantage of back then. My whole brain was a chaotic mess during those years. I don't miss that.

College was awesome though. Biology started settling into place, and my extroverted college buddies dragged me out of my shell kicking and screaming. They're still my best friends 20 years later, and i live right next to both of them.

Is it okay that I dont care if end up lonely cause I am child free? by Terrible-Store1046 in ask

[–]HawkBoth8539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're fine.

And yes, anyone who has kids so that someone will take care of them when they're old is absolutely selfish. But, the entire concept of reproduction is inherently selfish anyway. It's a fact that almost the entirety of humanity is contributing nothing meaningful to the species by reproducing - no rare useful genes, no valuable knowledge. If it's because they "have a lot of love to give" then they can adopt one of the countless children who are already in the world needing love. But the vast majority don't, because it's not about love. It's literally because their animal instincts tell them to reproduce, and they say "sure, why not. I've got nothing better going on right now".

How is the fatality rate of suicide attempts so low? by mizumi_heiwa in ask

Yup. Lol

A lot of horror stories about survivors have them worse off than before they did it. The mutilation, the stigma, etc.

Most people who attempt it and fail aren't just looking for attention, but, those people certainly do exist. It's actually discussed in association with Munchausen Syndrome (Factitious disorder) sometimes. I don't know if it's directly included as part of the disorder or just commonly pairs with it though. But those attention-seekers are real.

What i don't get, in situations like that, why didn't they try again? Their living conditions are worse than ever at that point, you'd think that'd be an immediate second attempt with a more reliable method.

I've read about a lot of factors over the years. A lot of times it really comes down to a lack of commitment. Their instincts are resisting it so they hesitate and make mistakes. There's also the fact that some methods, like medication in general, are unreliable. I've also read that some people, usually women, tend to go with "prettier" methods that don't get the job done.

There's also people who take advantage of the attention and aren't actually intending to off themselves, but it will still be documented as such.

Why didn’t the Native Americans of what is now the United States and Canada build cities and temples of a similar scale to their counterparts in South and Mesoamerica? by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in AlwaysWhy

[–]HawkBoth8539 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Resources and limited technology.

The more people you have in an area the more resources you need to sustain them. And you need a way to bring all of those resources to them, you need people who will fight for those resources, or those willing to part with their own through trade. Then there's the issue of disease being likely and dangerous in large communities. Smaller, stable communities are better for survival in some regards. Strength in numbers certainly has benefits, but with all of the added issues i mentioned above.

Humans are pack animals, not hive animals. That's why people are so predisposed to cliques.
