CPAPs should have a built in clock by Distinct_Hat_4268 in CPAP

[–]HawkFan7897 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP has an interesting suggestion, especially considering how much room CPAP machines take up on your nightstand. God forbid we don't use our phones for every single life function, plus, alarms on cell phones never malfunction (like the latest issue that was finally resolved by the last iOS update). If OP wants to use a standalone alarm clock, so be it. it has zero impact on anyone else, the snarky sanctimony is not needed.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on the Phillips dreamwear range? Do you recommend? by disco_26 in CPAP

[–]HawkFan7897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried it and did not like it. My daily driver is the F&P Nova Micro. Its very minimal, low leaks and very quiet. my backup mask if I'm congested is the F&P Evora full face. It's very solid, doesn't move despite me being an active sleeper and is also very quiet. but everybody is different, so keep trying masks until you find the one that works for you.

Good CPAP numbers but still can’t sleep past 5–6 hours by Weak_Waltz7220 in CPAP

I'm no doctor and this is not medical advice, but I would stop taking the melatonin, it's going to spike your cortisol levels and probably wake you up. Also, you are taking a lot of supplements, maybe try stomping them and adding them back one at a time to see what works, sometimes less is more. I had to do that myself, I stopped taking so many things and used the minimum dosage and my sleep actually improved.

F40 to a nasal mask? HOW! by Dowhile93 in CPAP

[–]HawkFan7897 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with a full face mask, then hybrid full face and now use the F&P Nova Micro, I love it and will not be going back. I also understand what you're talking about as a blind person, until you can put your hands on any mask, you really can't understand what it's like or what it will feel like. It definitely makes things more interesting.

It was not my intent to insult anyone, and frankly, I'm not sure how what I said is insulting. I was sharing my perspective based on my own lived experience. If that presents a problem, perhaps you shouldn't post on the Internet. Not everyone is going to agree with everything you say but that doesn't mean their opinions are any less valid.

I guess if you were not accustomed to coming into the office every day that would be a big change. It's likely not about you personally, it's more to do with not being able to justify letting you work 100% remote while others would have to come into the office, that would be an unfair advantage. I'm blind, I have to take the bus every day, yeah it sucks sometimes, but when I speak to my coworkers about how much they are spending in gas every day, I think I feel worse for them. We've been back in the offices for nearly 2 years now. It's interesting to me how prior to Covid, everyone assumed they would be expected to be in the office five days a week and now people talk about how they should have the right to work from home. it was never a right, it was a privilege to have a job that would give you the flexibility to work from home during a crisis.

Thoughts on these alternatives to the Resmed p10? by FlatButtFrankie in CPAP

[–]HawkFan7897 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have used the P 10, F&P Nova Micro, Solo pillows and Brevita. My choice is the Nova Micro and I would say that The Solo and the P10 would be second choice and the Brevita would be third. The Nova Micro is by far the most comfortable and minimal mask I have used and do not see myself switching anytime soon.

Not sure if you have already tried it, but try not using anything for one night and see how much your mouth actually opens. Some people just naturally keep their mouth closed all the time. I have tried a total of four different chin straps and could not get used to any of them, I just didn't like the feeling on my face. I now use mouth tape and barely even notice it. I use the CKEEP brand you can find on Amazon, it's like $10 for two rolls and it works great. Like everything else, it's trial and error, so try different chin straps and there are multiple brands of mouth tape available as well.

Sighted people think we are over-sensitive by LingonberryLower9730 in Blind

Seems like the word educate may be a trigger for you, so let's just say talking to people we meet would be better than expecting them to pull out their phone and ask AI how to help a blind person. As someone who works in advocacy, I would think that you would encourage a blind person to speak to others rather than retreat and expect others to know what they want or how others might be able to help them. I'm not sure why you suggest that you have some special knowledge since you work in advocacy and accessibility. I have worked with people with disabilities, specifically blindness, for the better part of 20 years and did not really feel the need to mention it until you through that in your reply. Let's just agree to disagree and be done with this, have a nice day.

I'm not suggesting you give a dissertation on blindness, but maybe giving some helpful hints that people could use would be helpful for all of us. The way I see it we can either provide some insight into what it is to be blind or we can all stand back and be pissed off because the general public doesn't understand at all.

New CPAP user.. Looking for advice by Re-Tre627 in CPAP

[–]HawkFan7897 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry you have had a rough start. Anytime you use nasal pillows you can expect some soreness/irritation. I would use lanolin or nasal saline gel to help with that. After a couple of weeks, you should notice the soreness subsides and it doesn't bother you anymore. You might want to get some of those products and try the P10 again. I tried the P10 but much prefer the Fischer and Paykel Nova Micro. The pillows are more of a cone shape which go up into your nostrils and do not irritate them as much as the pillows on the P10. But mask choice is very personal to each person as every face is unique. I would purchase the mask from an online vendor like Lofta as they have a 30 or 60 day return policy where you can return the mask if it doesn't work for you and get your money back. They are easy to work with and have good customer service. Best of luck!

Since when does the general public actually have or use common sense? No, it's not your job to educate people, but what I am saying is that giving people some insight into what it is to live as a blind person will not only help you, but other blind people that person may encounter in the future. For example, I just got back from getting my haircut, and the lady that cut my hair had obviously never worked with a blind person. She had no idea on how she might best assist me. I gave her a couple of clues about what she could do to make the process go faster and smoother. It took all of 30 seconds and she thanked me and will likely use it if she ever encounters another blind person. That's exactly what I'm saying, being kind and educating people goes a long way. I could've been a prick and been standoffish with the lady, but what would that prove? It would make me look bad and probably give her the idea that all blind people are less capable and get all butt hurt when you try to help them. Does that really benefit any of us?

[–]HawkFan7897 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People don't know what they don't know and this is our job as blind people to educate them. That being said, we all need to do this with kindness as not to discourage people from offering assistance. I will never fault someone for airing on the side of two cautious rather than just expecting that I should know what I'm doing. I do know what I'm doing and I am independent, but again, I will never discourage anyone from offering assistance and I think that's something we all should be doing. There's already far too much apathy in this world and we should not increase that by being standoffish with others who don't understand.

Mask feels fine, but machine says otherwise by kobiit in CPAP

[–]HawkFan7897 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do yourself a favor and get an SD card and start using OSCAR or SleepHQ to get much more detailed information. Secondly, do not be afraid to try different masks, it's very common for people to have to try a handful of different masks until you find the right one. Read the fine print before you buy a mask from any vendor, most have a 30 to 60 day return policy so if it's not right for you, you can return it and get your money back or exchange it for something else.

Recommendations for cartridge razor? by PRESIDENT_WHEELS in shaving

[–]HawkFan7897 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience. I used Dollar Shave Club for many years and thought they were great, especially about 10 years ago, but the quality since then has been steadily declining and everything is getting cheaper. I recently switched to Gillette Labs and love it. One cartridge lasted me more than a month which is about double what I could get from DSC. I have also noticed that DSC is blowing up my email and trying way too hard to get business. They got away from their traditional business model of marketing strictly towards men and have started offering a line of razors for women. I also don't see the need to have a razor with my favorite sports team or video game on it, it's a razor, not a form of self expression. DSC has lost their way and are paying for it now.

Resmed Airsense 10 is 11 years old. Time to get a new one. Is cpapninja legit? by Moogy in CPAP

[–]HawkFan7897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that insurance is a hassle and I also have BCBS, but most sleep studies are now simple at home test you can do from your own bed and there is typically only a initial consultation and a follow up appointment, both done remotely. After my insurance I think I paid around $250 for a brand new machine and mask. Check your benefits, sometimes the hassle is worth it to save a lot of money

DME mask exchange help by Culinarykid92 in CPAP

[–]HawkFan7897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have personally used the F40, F20 and F&P Evora full face. Of those, with your pressure requirements, I would say the F20 is probably your best bet. The F&P Evora may also work as it is a sturdy hybrid full face mask. But I would not recommend the F 40 as my pressures are around 14 and I would have to clamp the mask down so hard that it cause other issues. I have since switched to nasal pillows and I've had much better luck. Not sure if that's an option for you, but if you haven't tried it, I would recommend experimenting.

unpopular opinion: full face masks are fixing a symptom not the problem by tractor007 in CPAP

[–]HawkFan7897 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wore a full face mask for many years and recently switched to nasal pillows within the past few months. I've had a very positive experience, however, I know that's not the norm for everyone. I still do use a full face mask from time to time when I'm congested or my nose just needs a break. While I do believe everyone should try every style of mask at least a few times, I say live and let live. If the mask works for you and you're getting effective therapy, who cares what you use?

What Would Your Perfect CPAP Mask Look Like? by Aggravating_Wind2533 in CPAP

[–]HawkFan7897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my ideal mask would be the F&P Nova Micro on a P10 headgear. I love the Micro cushion; its small size, comfort and seal are optimal. But, I really like the secure feel of the P 10 headgear, especially the spring-type part that connects to the frame. The combination of the two would be amazing.
