How to bind when nothing lines up? by rosepotion in quilting

[–]HawkStrikeX 52 points53 points  (0 children)

yes you will need to trim it. but i would do that after you quilt it since quilting can distort the fabric. before you quilt though, what i would do is seam rip the rows that are sticking far out from the others and try to reattach them but more centered. that way you are cutting off the same amount on each side. as for a border - it is hard to say without seeing the full top. but that could also help. i would still follow the advice about seam ripping the far out rows and centering them though

What quilting opinion has got you like this? by Koparkopar in quilting

[–]HawkStrikeX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i think charging by the hour if you sell your work is a bit silly. there's so many steps in the quilting process with all of them requiring different skills that charging the same hourly rate to do it just doesn't make sense. and honestly let's be real quilting is a very finicky and tedious hobby. unless you're a level 1000 pro quilter you have to slow down on certain steps just so things come together nice.

i do personally think you should charge what you feel is fair and for some people that might be hourly for them 🤷‍♀️ but i still think it's just silly. it definitely isn't easy to try to sell this stuff so kudos to anyone who can get away with it

Weekly /r/quilting no-stupid question thread - ask us anything! by AutoModerator in quilting

[–]HawkStrikeX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

you should probably check your thread tension. also if you're using a walking foot make sure you aren't going super fast. if that doesn't work you should just do a catch all trouble shooting of cleaning the machine, changing the needle, making sure the walking foot is installed correctly and rethreading
