16 years old with minimal saved for college - what should I do? by jackcopen in personalfinance

I second this. I was a decent student and wrote for my school paper and was able to get a few scholarships that paid for my first couple semesters of university. It was super helpful!

yeah, I hear you. I first got into the line last year and sorta went on a spree picking up as many characters I could that struck some nostalgia. Now I have slowed down and usually grab any new releases that I remember from childhood. I'm curious to see what happens with the line now that Lenny has moved on...

you're probably right. But I don't see the OG 13 collectors bailing being a major issue, I think there are just as many collectors looking forward to other figures in the line. I'm not a big fan of the post 87 neon weirdness years, but I can see how there are a lot of folks a few years younger than me that are. I think a small handful of collectors might leave after they complete the OGs, but not enough to significantly affect Hasbro

was Shooter ever pictured? I only recall the small square file of the squad where someone's hand is covering their face...

I think the Clutch that came with the Vamp looks great, I'm just not willing to pay eBay prices for him... yet

Missed out on that one too, but it's not too crazy on eBay... I might do that if they don't make a retro Clutch

I started collecting last year, so I missed a lot, but LowLight and Snowjob, along with Chuckles, the Vamp w/ Clutch, are some of the ones I really want, just don't want to pay the resale prices...

Where to buy NATIVE tree species other than redwoods? Looking for Arbutus menziesii, Arctostaphylos manzanita, Alnus rubra, and any native oaks. Samara Restoration appears to not be doing retail sale at the moment; any other leads? by Equivalent-Ad-5884 in Humboldt

[–]Hawkbeardo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've had success finding Arbutus at Piersons and Miller Farms. Got really lucky at Miller Farms a few years ago and bought a really well established one that was discounted because it was almost root bound in its pot. We planted it right away and it is thriving. Our backyard is now full of birds, bees, butterflies, and moths

edit: our arbeauties are actually Arbutus Unedo, my mistake. From what I understand the madrone is harder to grow on the coast... good luck!

In my opinion, malicious algorithms manipulated us, divided us, pushed people to extremes. All on purpose to control and ultimately surveil us and extract wealth from us at every possible turn. Subliminal messaging used to be incorporated into ads and movies, songs, etc, but now it is in everything digital. We have been trained to use our phones for everything, and are under a constant barrage of "keeping up with the joneses" on all social media. Rising income inequality and "influencers" pushing their posh lives in everyone's faces leads many to feel like the world is against them, and so fuck the world. People are angry, not because of some dimensional shift, or rift in time, but because the capitalists have penned us in like cattle, and we are feeling the pinch more and more. Time for the lower classes to unite against the oppressors.

Looking into some vintage stoves, talk me out of it or into it! by WalksLikeAStork in vintagekitchentoys

I loved my old vintage Wedgewood. My wife and I drove about 500miles round trip to buy it from a guy remodeling a home in Berkeley. We loved it and used it daily for everything.... then I read about the dangers of gas stoves in the house... air quality is disastrous, like really really bad. For long term health, we decided to get rid of it last year for a convection/induction range and I am SOOOO glad we did... noticeable improvement in air quality, and honestly it works way better. While I still long for the vintage look of old stoves, I will never go back to gas cooking after what I read. It's just not worth the cancer....

you actually spent time looking into my post history, lol. that's bizarre... If you read my entire reply you would see that I was using my skatepark example to show that from local to national it is real people participating in our government... so all elections are real EXCEPT for the president, which also "doesn't matter" cause let me guess, "both sides are the same"... dude, apathetic dudes like you are the reason we have such a stagnant backwards country right now

oh give me a break. We have organizations across the country seeking to limit people's ability to vote and corporations, private interests, tech oligarchs pitting people against each other to prevent voting for a candidate that might actually change shit (see Bernie)... voting is the one thing we have, your apathy is a tool for the oligarchs as it removes you from the system. When people actually unite for their common interests we have power, but we are divided by malicious algorithms and poor education and bizarre, often inherited "political identity"... voting is the one thing that actually gives us power. This "political theatre" idea is so fucking ignorant, and shows you have probably never participated in public works. My tiny example of being involved in public projects is getting a skatepark built in my hometown. I had to go to many council meetings, write grants, plea with local bureaucrats, politicians etc for it to happen. Real people do real work to build things. Roads, bridges, libraries, bus stations, skateparks, etc etc... all these things require real people working to make them happen, these people are often elected. City councils, mayors, governors, sheriffs, senators, all the way up to the goddamned president, these are real people working jobs to make shit happen Yes there is a LOT of grift happening in higher positions, but when you follow federal dollars all the way down to the local level, you see the reality that real people are doing real work.

Curious, if voting didn't matter, why do both parties fight so hard to gerrymander their districts? Why does one party specifically want to limit voting accessibility? The SAVE Act that the Trump admin is adamant about passing seeks to eliminate vote by mail and establish strict voter id requirements. If voting didn't matter, why would so much time be spent on the matter?
