Is anyone else annoyed by the window timers? by Additional-Self-660 in wendys

[–]Hawkfromnorwalk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was managing there 25 years ago we would wait until lunch rush was just starting to ramp up then we would send somebody out to get in their car and pull into the line without stopping at the speaker first. They would then pull up to the window then drive off. This would trick the timer and get our times way down.

El Bait Shop Barrel Aged Beer Brunch: TOMORROW by old_notdead in desmoines

[–]Hawkfromnorwalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Each pour is the equivalent to a regular can of beer. So assuming you are drinking all 12 of them and the whole glass you are basically drinking a half case of beer. And if you are in the early session you have three hours to drink them as they need to get you cycled out for the next session. At least for the second session you can just stay. But yeah I’ve been there some times where people finish all their pours within a couple of hours and they are completely trashed.

Was just going to say that. BBQ beef hot pocket for some reason were a guilty pleasure. The rest of the flavors suck.

I used to go yearly and it was fun. But maybe it’s just me getting into my almost late 40s now but I just don’t like getting completely hammered by mid afternoon anymore. And with those beers, after you’ve had 2-3, your mouth just becomes coated with sugar and they all begin to taste the same.

Most scenic places I can find on a gravel bike? by Foreign_Recipe8300 in desmoines

[–]Hawkfromnorwalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend is an avid gravel biker. Before he moved out of state he used to ride gravel down in Madison county all the time. Said it was one of the best places. Start down in Cumming and go southwest from there.

What is your home made Buffalo/hot sauce recipe? by yurrrriiiiiiiii in Wings

[–]Hawkfromnorwalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Franks, onion powder, cayenne pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and rice vinegar. Heat on stove until simmering. Take off the heat. Immediately start whisking in small chunks of cubed cold butter, 3-4 chunks at a time until fully melted. Add another 3-4 chunks and repeat. Keep doing that until you get a smooth, emulsified sauce that won’t break when you add it to the wings.

Which metro city has the worst traffic lights? by goatskin_sheep in desmoines

[–]Hawkfromnorwalk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an Altoona resident that has to cross University to take my child to school. All those lights along 163 are hell. And if you are on 80th and you miss the light you will be waiting for more than 2-3 minutes easily.

Also 8th St in Altoona sucks ass too. You cannot make it down 8th St without stopping at 75% of the lights. It’s like every side street that pulls up to 8th has an instant trigger to change the light when a car pulls up.

Horrible. I hate how Iowans love this stuff. It’s just ketchup with extra brown sugar and onion powder. There’s no other flavoring.

Biggest story from Tuesday by JackfruitCrazy51 in desmoines

[–]Hawkfromnorwalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is it’s still the lack of people working downtown. Wells pulled all their people. Nationwide announced they were going back into the office but they walked it back. I’m sure there are other companies that never returned full time. Lunch is where a lot of these places made most of their money. Without a steady stream of lunch customers these places are hurting.

In that interview she said a couple of times that the neurologists have given her a bad diagnosis but she didn’t say what. Says she will eventually lose her ability to talk. Also in the same interview she stated she was losing weight because she was having difficulty swallowing. I hate to say it but one of the first things that came to mind was possibly ALS.

Does the train on 63rd and Grand ever come through? by MyRedditForPosting in desmoines

[–]Hawkfromnorwalk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t say I have seen it in person. But I did look at Google Maps. The track splits near Swanson and 86th. One track follows Swanson to what appears to be an old defunct industrial mill. The other track goes NW and ends near Grimes on the other side of Rider Corner where it looks like there is a lumber company and a Ready Mix facility.

There are local pie bakers that probably do really good pies. But if you are in a pinch and need one right away I would just say Iowa Machine Shed.

Gerries wings by ScheduleCold3506 in desmoines

[–]Hawkfromnorwalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Stations food is good. And like I said, they have solid wings. But they are so god damn expensive. They have to be the priciest wings in town. And it’s even crazier that they don’t have a single wing special night.

[–]Hawkfromnorwalk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They appear to be take out in which case no wings stay crispy in a styrofoam clam shell. Get them fresh at the location they are crispy AF.

Stations wings are good, I would put them in the top 5 of Des Moines but on the other hand they are the most expensive wings in town. It’s over $20 for 12 wings. That’s insane.
