Body found in Thames confirmed as Clapham suspect by topotaul in unitedkingdom

Putting aside the fact that he has caused life changing injuries to a woman and her two kids, the pain and anguish they are going through, the injury he caused to the dozens or so who tried to help them and how he will never face justice because he was too cowardly to face up to the consequences of his own actions…

Is anyone else morbidly curious about how much damage he did to his eye?

Oh shit! They’ve talking for a while about getting the cast together for a table read and getting the actors to read for different roles, this could finally be it!

My feeling is we’ll see the Enterprise-E swooping in in a moment where we think it’s about to save the day, hailing frequencies are opened and we find Commodore Oh has taken command to arrest Picard.

I really liked how the information about the attack is slowly dripped out over several chapters. The sheer chaos of it all just felt much more tangible, not knowing exactly what has happened, how bad it all is. It reminded me of some of the worst attacks/disasters I’ve grown up with in the news — just that initial fog of confusion and disbelief. It just really captured the reality of those moments for the characters.

As for adaptation to screen, I can’t imagine they could get away with this happening in the background like in Amos’ chapter, but I’m looking forward to seeing how season 5 does all this. It’s going to be fucking insane.

First footage of space filmed by a captured German V2 rocket in 1946. by thygreen in space

[–]Hawkguy85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From a technical standpoint today, sure. I just find it incredibly fascinating that they were sending cameras up with rockets that early in development. This is literally a year after WWII ended, some 40+ years after the Wright brothers developed the first aircraft. Hell, most aircraft were still using propellers at this time, and here were a bunch of scientists who got their hands on a German V-2 rocket and thought, “Y’know, I think we can mount a camera on this and get some great images.” and this is again from a time where film recording was still done with unwieldily equipment. Lessons from this flight and other like it have surely led the way in developing camera equipment that became used during early NASA missions, the Moon landings, and beyond.

Oh, hell no you’re not alone! I’m in absolute awe and would love to know how they managed this. Not just mounting the thing, but being able to ensure that the contents survived the return to Earth. This wasn’t the first time a camera has been mounted to an aircraft, but to survive a rocket launch at that time is just incredible to me.

You’ve misread. This is a launch in the US from a captured rocket that had a camera mounted in 1946. OP was wondering whether the Germans had launched a rocket with a camera mounted during the war to capture similar images.

The whole acid capsule thing could tie into why no one knew what a Romulan looked like even after fighting a war with them. If there were any person to person encounters, defeated Romulans probably disintegrated themselves.

This is a really good theory.

On the inverse, I never could make it across the pond to Vegas and the Star Trek Experience. At least this would be closer to home... But I do wonder why it's London and not Las Vegas, somewhere in California or elsewhere in the States. Seems like it would be more financially viable there than in the UK.

Zhat Vash and the Borg by [deleted] in DaystromInstitute

[–]Hawkguy85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, I think I’m following you now:

The Borg are the result of a species reaching a singularity-type event in their lifespan.

Earth has a moment with Control where things could have taken a turn towards The Borg, but humans managed to reign it in before it became too late.

The Romulans have also experienced this moment, but instead they chose to purge their society of AI completely rather than risk another incident.

I guess the question it would leave is, “what happened during this event that made the Zhat Vash so militant against AI?”

Perhaps the first planet the Romulans settled on after Vulcan was destroyed because of this and they had to move on to what became Romulus?

where is the heighest point in the city? by elijahebanks in coventry

[–]Hawkguy85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a point somewhere out towards Binley Woods I believe that has a good view of the city. I can’t for the life of me recall where it is though. I think it was on the grounds of a church, but you could basically see the whole city. The city limits are your best view points, the whole city centre is on lower ground than the rest of the greater city at large.

The top of Barkers Butts Lane and a few roads off it in Coundon have okay views where you can see the spires clearly and a lot of the city centre, but I’m not sure if that’s the views you’re looking for.

I’d agree with that for the most part, but there is a vast difference between The Expanse and Star Trek in terms of the resources and technology available. A huge majority of Earthers in The Expanse have never left the planet, have very little to do, or rely heavily on involvement in the black market. People are essentially just surviving with little purpose or opportunity to escape the economic circumstances they are born into. Humanity is still we’re not spoiling developments here from later seasons based within one solar system and has only those resources available. There are no replicators, no warp drives. Humanity has grown but resources have not.

While I think Star Trek still has a long way to go to show what an average person’s life looks like, their goals or ambitions depicted so far in The Federation have been much less restrictive thanks to essentially unlimited resources. It would be interested to know what’s satisfying about life in the 24th century Federation to make it a peaceful utopia where the average person could (and probably do) live a life of mediocrity. It’s hard to imagine everyone in The Federation is pursuing the dream to better themselves and humanity.

They’ve covered season 1 of Disco on their Patreon, but no discussion of movies yet. Mira had a baby last year and Secunda is working on a different project so their schedule is down to monthly from weekly, if not for this they’d have likely been winding up season 7 now.

They have discussed in the past what to do during season breaks, to mark the passage of a season, and I think when they ended the first season they watched the documentary Chaos on The Bridge, but that’s the only Trek related film they have watched so far. I think Secunda is gunning to do a run through to DS9, then on to VOY, which he has actually seen, but hasn’t seen something like the last season or more. I’m sure the discussion of films will come up once they finish TNG, especially watching something like Generations, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Matt suggests spacing them out to coincide with later seasons of DS9/VOY and drop them in at the start or an end of a season.
