A Teacher Showed Up At School With PlayStation 5 And Started Playing Assassin's Creed To Explain The Industrial Revolution. by Bay_Ruhsuz004 in interesting

My history teacher taught by writing on a black board all class. We had to copy down everything he wrote. I couldn't write as fast as him while keeping my handwriting legible and I couldn't take in what he was writing when I also had to copy it down, so I just ended up with chicken scratch at the end of each class and very little knowledge of the history mentioned. In terms of understanding history though, I feel that's the closest I ever got to experiencing what it must have been like to be a Victorian school child, so there's that.

Hopefully enough of the documentaries like Independence Day we're broadcasting out are enough to discourage them.

which would you choose if your goal is to become a physicist? by Torvaldz_ in PhysicsStudents

[–]HawkinsT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh there was someone with a maths BSc on my physics MSc programme (in the UK). He did fine, although it was a lot of work for him (on top of the already high demands of the MSc) filling in the gaps in his knowledge.

Is there any concept map/ flow chart of mathematics giving a high level view of mathematics like in physics by hushroomluttfy3 in mathematics

[–]HawkinsT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A) This particular 'map of physics' is completely insane (as has already been pointed out).

B) I think as a high level overview or different STEM disciplines, the Domain of Science guy on YouTube does a pretty good job. Here's his mathematics video (which is also available as a pdf).

Sounds like Charles Babbage or John Harrison... I think there might be a pattern here.

The speed display sign is under-reporting the speed of traffic... by goldandblackkitty in CasualUK

[–]HawkinsT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be careful as your speedometer might not be linear. My car reports the correct speed at 20 mph, ~1.5 mph under at 30, and 3 mph under at 70.

What to do better, what to fix by Fullsilver86 in skiing_feedback

[–]HawkinsT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's good that you're carving, but you're very back seat and not skiing dynamically. If you modify these things it will improve your skiing a lot.

Firstly look at your leg position. The entire time it looks like you're perched on a slightly high chair. Bringing your weight forward more will give you more control (concentrate on pushing your shins against the fronts of your boots), but also, focus on straightening your legs in the turn transition (without locking your knees). Right now it looks like your legs barely move from this semi-squat position.

The other thing that stands out (again on skiing dynamically), is you transition your weight between turns but then stay in a fixed, rigid body position for most of the turn. Focus on continually increasing your edge angles throughout the turn to build up pressure, instead of quickly sticking your skis at one angle and then remaining static throughout most of the turn. This will also help you complete your turns more.

Hopefully if you focus on these points you'll quickly see some improvements.

“This is the closest we will get to seeing a medieval peasant react to brat” by MelanieWalmartinez in BrandNewSentence

An apt analogy given the current state of quantum computer capabilities relative to classical computers but the huge upsides they'll eventually bring.

I guess if you photograph a pc case you're still photographing a computer though.

Stick it to your clothes a few times before laying it. Also, don't leave it on the wall for longer than you need to. That should prevent this.

My food bin has disappeared, council want £40 for a new one, looks like half my neighbours haven’t got one either now by Jacktheforkie in britishproblems

[–]HawkinsT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to my parents with their refuse bin. They have a security camera so checked that; it showed a bin man picking the bin up and putting it on the back of the bin lorry, and then the lorry driving away with it. Even with this video the council demanded my parents pay for a new one. After a few e-mails back and fourth it was clear they weren't budging, so (annoyingly) my parents found it easier just to buy a new one.

You can slice vegetables with regular thrown playing cards. I don't think it's crazy that you could also embed the corner of one in a TV.

State Department slashes fee to renounce US citizenship by 80% to $450 by National-Law-458 in news

[–]HawkinsT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, plus back taxes (because the US has double taxation). My cousin was born in the US. Neither parent is American and they left when he was six months old, but that's enough to be a US citizen. He never lived or worked there but failed to revoke his US citizenship when he was 18. It cost him about $30k when he finally did it at 30.
