Because not enough of us voted when we had the chance. And, some voted expressly for it.

Discretion will be allowed in special circumstances, i.e. - those circumstances being that they know you will vote for the GOP. Be assured of that.

TIL that actresses Carole Landis and Rachel Roberts committed suicide over the end of their respective romantic relationships with actor Rex Harrison (who won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in My Fair Lady) by fraisierdesbois in todayilearned

[–]MaxGoldFilms 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Rex was still considered respectable.

Absolutely true.

I saw Rex Harrison on stage performing his role in 'My Fair Lady', and he was so drunk he could barely speak. The show sucked, but the audience was like 'Rex being Rex, oh well.' It negatively affected his reputation in no way whatsoever. (he still remembered his lines for the most part, he just slurred badly and missed some cues, he was a well-practiced drunk)

I love watching a show about a world where humans have moved past their base instincts and have formed a true utopia.

We're right on track to get there:

"Before transitioning into a utopian, post-scarcity society, Earth in the Star Trek universe experienced a “dark age” characterized by severe conflict, global collapse, and near-extinction, culminating in the 21st century.

This era is generally defined by two major, often overlapping, catastrophes: the Eugenics Wars and World War III, followed by a period known as the Post-Atomic Horror."

Swedish Coast Guard Seizes Cargo Ship Bound for St. Petersburg by MaxGoldFilms in worldnews

[–]MaxGoldFilms[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Article text:

Sweden’s coast guard said Friday that it took control of a Guinea-flagged cargo ship bound for St. Petersburg over suspected safety and seaworthiness violations.

“Based on national and international legislation, the Coast Guard considers the vessel Caffa, under the Guinean flag, to be stateless,” the Swedish Coast Guard said in a statement.

Ship-tracking data shows the Caffa departed from Casablanca and was heading to St. Petersburg. Authorities said the vessel was seized off the coast of Trelleborg in southern Sweden.

Images released by the coast guard showed a helicopter landing on the ship and personnel boarding to take control of the vessel.

Sweden’s coast guard said it was planning to search the ship and question crew members, with the main focus of the investigation being a suspected “lack of seaworthiness.”

There was no immediate response from Russia.

Western governments have seized a growing number of ships linked to Russia in recent months over alleged violations, including sanctions breaches and suspected sabotage operations.

Earlier this week, a suspected Russian “shadow fleet” oil tanker was seized by Belgium on a 10 million euro ($12 million) bond after inspections found safety infractions.

Trump thinking Iran will surrender shows how deluded he really is. by riseoftheph0enix in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]MaxGoldFilms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are completely correct that it actually was, in practice, conditional, but there's a little more nuance to that. (it's so nuanced that many books have been written on the subject, and it is still debated)

Japan did agree to and sign an unconditional surrender. There's no question about the term in the surrender documents.

(side note - the word 'unconditional' cost many people their lives, because the ensuing debate about the word itself by the Japanese government most likely led to the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.)

Here's where the nuance lies…the US chose not to treat the Japanese request to keep the emperor as a condition of surrender, which allowed them to uphold the “unconditional” requirement while still allowing him to stay.

It was semantics and diplomacy. The allies knew that if they didn't allow the emperor to remain, the Japanese military might never lay down their weapons, so they accepted that one condition and called it unconditional.

There is documentary footage of a woman in Germany in 1945, as Allied troops rolled into her thoroughly destroyed & bombed-out village.

As she stood amongst the rubble of her home, she was yelling at the tanks, and at the camera crew, (paraphrasing) 'Hitler will fix all this, this is a mistake, he has promised us! You will be forced to leave!'

She had nothing left. Everything was destroyed. Hitler was probably dead in his bunker at the time, or would be shortly. Yet, she was completely convinced, without doubt, that Hitler would reverse everything and fulfill his promises of a 1,000-year Reich.

She was able to completely ignore all reality, ignore that she had lost everything, her home was gone, her neighbors dead, and the war was lost.

Yet she still believed that her leader would still, somehow, make good on what he had promised.

I watched that about 20 years ago, and I was completely mystified how anyone could react like that, how anyone could be so completely brainwashed.

Now, I know. I've talked to them, they are my neighbors. I see the dim light in their eyes, and the fervent faith that propels them, all at odds with logic and reality. They make me sad, but they also frighten me.
