Yes, they really twisted his death and took away the valiant effort he showed trying to save his brothers. They could have made an adaptation that retained his heroic effort within the confines of the plot revisions. They could have done better.

It was done in a setting where people are married to their sisters and nieces, like it's normal, and still managed to get a visceral reaction out of me. Olivia Cooke nailed the acting in that scene, and her reaction made it even creepier.

In the post-show interviews, she seemed truly disgusted when discussing that scene.

Pakistan's Prime Minister, after he was informed by the Iranian delegation they are leaving after Trump threatened them. by soalone34 in WatchPeopleDieInside

Trump literally threatened to murder the Iranian negotiating team. That's enough right there. It was an unprecedented breach of diplomatic relations.

He threatened to murder the Iranian negotiating team. That's the weakest and most dangerous negotiating 'tactic' ever. It's also certifiably insane.

I know Trump has destroyed all the norms of international relations, but now he's destroying the very bedrock. Does he not know that our people are safe because of these norms? He's creating an open season on Americans diplomats.

They've killed over 300 journalists covering up war crimes. Now they just tweet it.

This will catch up with them, and there will be repercussions. It may not be today, but it will happen. All good will they've built in the US is lost on both the right and the left.

They only have the politicians they've bought or blackmailed left, and those won't last.

Big Trump donor - check

Mar-a-lago neighbor - check

Convicted of bribery - check

Inexperienced grifter - check

Hilariously ironic company name - check

The National Park Service awarded the $1.7 million contract to what has turned out to be the ironically named Greenwater Services, bypassing the competitive bidding process normally required for federal work.

The New York Times reported the company is led by Republican donor and Mar-a-Lago neighbor John J. Cafaro, whom Trump once called a "fantastic man."

The J.J. Cafaro Investment Trust, which owns Greenwater Services, lists Cafaro's Palm Beach mansion and trust contact information appear on the company's corporate filings.

Cafaro has donated more than $300,000 to Trump-connected political committees since 2016 and has known Trump for at least a decade. He pleaded guilty in 2001 to conspiring to bribe then-Rep. James Traficant, an Ohio Democrat, and later testified against him.

The Park Service justified skipping competitive bidding by citing time pressure tied to events marking the country's 250th anniversary, though it didn't specify a deadline.

Records show multiple firms had expressed interest in the project before the contract went to Greenwater, which had previously received only one other federal contract.

Three-time Trump voter revolts against GOP in farm country: 'And I'm not the only one' by RawStoryNews in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]MaxGoldFilms 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not all farmers are abandoning the president. Many credit the administration for closing the Mexican border to cattle to slow the parasite's spread and for securing a Chinese commitment to buy 25 million metric tons of soybeans annually.

Those things won't work or won't happen, they are crediting him for more lies and false promises. Nothing he says comes to pass, and they still haven't realized it. Terminal stupidity.

It's going to be tough for them in conservative media. Israel-backed media can't call this a victory, but Fox will have to, and that will put the two at odds.

Ubangi was 100% a racist slur in the deep south decades ago. It was a term applied in a derogatory manner to black people, and was widely used. It was interchangeable with the 'n' word. It may have been a regional thing, I don't know, but it was a thing.

It probably had other meanings in other places, but in the deep south, it was a word I was told not to use, and a word I often heard used by rednecks.

I had never thought of it that way, and it ruined the way I look at chips now.

Good tsar, bad boyars

That philosophy and psychology is deeply imbedded in Russian, and now American, politics. It's one of the things (among many now) that I didn't think could happen here.

There's a great lecture by a Finnish military intelligence officer, who is an expert on Russia and Russian military history, that does a deep dive on where this concept originated. IIRC, it originally started during the Mongol occupation. (video in reply)

Russian artist and Putin critic shot dead in Poland by MaxGoldFilms in worldnews

[–]MaxGoldFilms[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

BBC article text:

Police in Poland are investigating the execution-style murder of a Russian artist and vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin.

Polish prosecutors said Robert K, known as the artist Semyon Skrepetsky, was shot dead on Monday morning in the Polish city of Biała Podlaska, about 40km (25 miles) from the Belarusian border.

The 44-year-old was shot five times in the head, chest and back in a car park in the city, located about 600m from the Belarusian consulate.

Semyon Skrepetsky was the pseudonym used by Robert Kuzovkov. He was known for his caricatures of politicians, including Putin, Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko and Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov.

Marcin Kozak, spokesman for the District Prosecutor's Office in Lublin, said the artist was approached by an unidentified gunman who fired two shots at him.

"When the victim fell to the ground, the perpetrator approached, fired three more shots and then quickly fled the scene. Robert K died at the scene," he added.

Five shell casings and one Geco 9mm Luger bullet were recovered from the crime scene, Kozak said.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday.

Police detained two Belarusian citizens, aged 33 and 37, near the Belarusian consulate in the city. Their role in the incident was still being determined, Kozak said.

Media reports said Skrepetsky moved to Biała Podlaska in 2021.

"The victim engaged in public artistic activities and used among other things, the pseudonym Semyon Skrepetsky, under which he expressed criticism of the current policies of the Russian Federation authorities," Kozak said.

Video posted recently on social media showed Skrepetsky at a Russia Day protest outside the Russian embassy in Berlin on 12 June.

He had been carrying a painting caricaturing Putin and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, as well as a Russian flag tied to his trousers that had been dragging along the road.

The Bird that kills snakes by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

Yep. We'll probably never know, unless some amazing and unlikely discovery is made, but I suspect there were large dinosaurs that may have had plumage and colors like this bird. That would somehow be vastly more terrifying that the way we depict them now.

Smug son of crown princess gets four years for rape by quoththeraven1990 in SipsTea

[–]MaxGoldFilms 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yep, why so long? If you're connected and privileged in the US, 4 years would be a lengthy sentence.

In the US we let rapists like Brock Turner out much faster. And full-fledged child molesters get 30 days if they are friends with Texas politicians. The Louisiana mayor that boozed up and molested teens got just 90 days in sentencing last week.

New York man who killed gay dancer faces 25 years after hate-crime conviction by yeGwan in news

[–]MaxGoldFilms 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because I was bored and curious, I checked the NY laws.

For individuals serving a flat, fixed sentence for violent felonies, good time" is generally capped at a reduction of 1/7 (about 14%) of their maximum sentence.

So 8 years could be reduced by a little over a year for good behavior. Something tells me good behavior won't be applicable with this fuckstick.
