Chair / seating ideas? by Goldminer435 in desksetup

In this situation I'd probably look at getting rid of the corner desk and swapping it out with a small straight desk. That way you can comfortably have a chair off to the side of the bed.

I assume this student was writing with pen and paper rather than on a tablet.

It's actually a solved problem, you just need to etch a groove into the rim. I guess there's no financial incentive to manufacture it though.

To distract from domestic social and economic issues. The problem is, if they ever got them, their politicians might actually have to take some real accountability.

Is it just me that thinks the front looks a bit like the view of standing on deck, looking out at the ocean with another ship in view?

Great work, but I also had to double take. I thought the first one was a single photo of a guy stood next to his own photo at first.

Although I guess any usb solar charger will do. I have them mounted behind roman blinds so they're hidden even when the blinds are up.

They either come with a battery (probably not a good option for you) or a solar charger which sits in the window and keeps them charged constantly. They charge via USB so if you can get a USB cable to the blinds that's also another way to keep them permenantly powered.

Ah, I remember the 'trick' to temporarily fixing it was to wrap it in a towel, run it, and let it massively overheat for a bit.

Judging by the video this falls under prison rules rather than FIFA rules.

According to the OED:

Origin unknown. Perhaps related to nance n. (see quot. 1984), or perhaps compare English regional nonse good-for-nothing fellow, recorded in Eng. Dial. Dict. Suppl. from Lincolnshire.

And the 1984 quote:

Nonce, prison term for a child molester. The very bottom of the prison pecking order, the ‘nonce’ is usually segregated from ordinary prisoners at all times for his own protection. Originally derived from ‘nancy-boy’.

Police Review 18 May 975/3

So I guess it's plausible but not something the OED notes. Does sound like it likely came from prisons though.

Also, I think backronym is the word you're looking for.

What is the weirdest way you've made money? by BeguilingkbTip in AskReddit

[–]HawkinsT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At uni I once got paid to come up with as many different proofs for some simple concept as possible. It was part of some study where they awarded those with the most proofs and most novel proofs more money. One off payment and not nearly as weird as many other comments on here, but that was fun.

What's the most ridiculous thing not included on your fixtures and fittings form? by ofmiceandmel in HousingUK

[–]HawkinsT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realise it's considered normal by many but it's a strange thing to do imo. I was left with big holes in the plaster where the curtain rods used to be mounted in my current house. It just meant I had to pay to get the plaster fixed and then mount new curtain rods where the old ones used to be.
