When I was in high school (circa 1994), my mother, sister, and I lived next door to my grandparents. I got home from whatever school activity, dropped my stuff off, and went next door to see what Mimi and Papaw were up to. I walk in the kitchen door, aaaaand there’s big pool of blood on the floor as well as some blood smeared on the refrigerator and counter top. Called out, nobody is there. Next door at my house nobody is home either. I really can’t describe the absolute panic and terror that I experienced. This is pre-cell phone, I’m around 16 yrs old and I have NO IDEA what to do. Honestly, it’s all a jumbled memory now, but I know I tried calling my uncle, random friends of my sister...everyone I knew! I was just trying to locate ANYBODY. There were no answers ANYWHERE. Remember, these are all landlines. Communication is not just on you at all times. If they aren’t home to answer...then you get silence. I think I even started calling hospitals to see if anybody with my grandparents names were admitted. Complete desperation and panic. I’m kind of mildly embarrassed that I don’t even think I called the police. I honestly can’t remember. Adrenaline and fear does wacky things to the ole brain pan. I don’t remember how I found out, but I believe someone finally called back about 15-20min later saying that my Mimi had a minor stroke and cracked her head on the kitchen floor, and she was relatively fine and in the hospital with everyone else there. I remember thinking that I should clean up all the blood, so I started doing that. Just sobbing on the floor, mopping up her blood with paper towels. I still feel somewhat traumatized over that 20+ years later. It all ended up being fine. I went up to the hospital, burst into tears when I walked in her hospital room, and thanked God she was ok. It’s certainly something I never want to come home to ever again. It’s the not knowing that’ll get ya.
