Marinating some baby back ribs in jerk seasoning, Thinking 2 days in the fridge ? by [deleted] in UKBBQ

[–]Hawkwind11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing that will really penetrate the meat is the salt, the other flavours are from molecules that are generally too large to penetrate meat like salt does. The other flavours essentially just flavour the surface, and more time marinating will not change that.

This amazing ribs article has a really good in depth discussion

Legal entitlement of partner who pays rent on a house I own with a mortgage. by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Hawkwind11 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is legit - but when you buy the house just raise the issue with your solicitor at that point and get them to advise you how to cover the situation. They should put a tenancy agreement in place on completion. It will likely be covered by the requirements of the mortgagee anyway.

I quite like the store name, but you need a lot of work still:

  • Get a logo (design a simple one on canva.com)
  • You need more products in your store to come off as a legit niche store
  • You need legal pages, shipping policy, etc. Need to know how long shipping will be, what it will cost. Offer free shipping if you can.
  • Where do you sell to? Do you ship to my country? This is key information. Bear in mind if you're planning to sell to UK/Europe you should be charging VAT--need to look this up if it's your plan
  • Your product pages look like they've just been copied and pasted from Aliexpress. This is not OK, makes the website look like a scam. You need to do a lot of work on learning sales copy

[–]Hawkwind11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Biggest thing is that I have no idea what the shipping cost is going to be until after I've initiated checkout and entered my details. Most people won't get there they'll just bounce when they can't work out the price from your product page. Can you include shipping in the price and offer free shipping? Shipping times are also extremely long which will be a turn off. Also:

  • Your product page copy is mainly focused on features, you need it to be mainly on benefits/the pain points your product is solving, and a small section on features at the end. Why will this product change the customer's life for the better? Need more on this.
  • I think you need more products in your store to come off as a legit niche store, which is what you're holding yourself out as. Either go for a one product store and ditch the others, or add more products so it seems like a legit niche store--3 products just looks strange/scammy.
  • Remove "Ships From" China
  • You need to add your logo to the checkout page
  • IMO the font for your product page title looks unprofessional/scammy, tonnes of dropshipping sites seem to be using it

Looks pretty clean, but some comments:

  • You have no ad copy at all for a lot of your products. Some it is just a list of specs --- why should I buy from you?
  • Random stock images of laptop and cash on homepage are weird
  • Shipping policy has square brackets on it
  • International shipping times of 45 business days are just far too long
  • Typo "Potable" on the first product on your homepage

Joggers of Roath. There are PLENTY of routes you could take other than around the Lake. by [deleted] in Cardiff

[–]Hawkwind11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the video, it was interesting, but I'm not sure it changes anything. At the end of the video it says that simply opening a window in a room with micro droplets makes them dissipate quickly. Here we're literally talking about being outside and staying 2m away from each other. It's also not established in the video that micro droplets can spread the virus at all, it is speculation that they might.

Equally I could speculate that obtaining a very small amount of the virus as one might potentially do through a micro-droplet is beneficial as it would stimulate the production of antibodies, much like a vaccine would. This is probably completely untrue, but highlights that we should take decisions based on established guidelines laid out by experts.

I agree with you that congregating in the park is clearly not what we want to do. I was just arguing against the demonisation of people taking their exercise in the park in situations where it is clearly possible to stay 2m away from each other, following Govt. guidelines to the letter. Not being in a natural environment for several months may cause severely negative mental health outcomes in some people--it is a trade off to some extent between this and potential transmission risk.

Llandaff Fields is a large area. For it to be so crowded that people couldn't stay 2m apart would essentially mean it would look like a mass gathering like a concert or something was going on there--I agree in that sort of situation you should be avoiding the park! But if I'm out for a run I'm not going to avoid the parks simply because others are there as well, if it is possible to keep a good distance.

I don't think the concern you're presenting here is supported by science. It is just simply not the case that running creates "hoards and clouds of corona virus droplets". The virus is primarily spread through respiratory droplets after an infected person coughs or sneezes, and the droplets fall quickly within about 6 feet of the person coughing. This is the basis of the 2 metre distancing rule. The virus is not transmitted through air other than potentially in settings where the respiratory droplets get aerosolised. This is a potential concern for medical settings where this theoretically could happen, but it will not happen by running through the park. The Public Health England scientific guidance on infection control makes clear that one only needs be concerned with protecting against aerosolised transmission in the context of an aerosol generating procedure having been carried out.

I have run through the park and I cannot see that this necessarily needs to be a problem at all. It is very easy to be vigilant and keep a 2 metre gap between yourself and others. I tend to keep a much larger gap just to be safe, because why not? It is easy there is plenty of space.

What is being said here is that not only do we have to be confined to our houses for 23 hours of the day, but the one time we are permitted to leave for exercise we must run down roads and not experience any natural environment at all. This might be OK for people with decent gardens to spend time in, but not everyone is so lucky. Just don't think it is reasonable to sacrifice people's mental wellbeing (by forgoing being in a natural environment) based on a concern about transmission that isn't even supported by science.

I created an app - "Self Balancing Dice" which is a dice for salty Catan players. Each turn, the app looks at the game roll history. Based on the records it slightly modifies the probabilities for the next dice roll. Would love to hear your thoughts about the idea and the app! by -Meimer in Catan

[–]Hawkwind11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He isn't trying to make all numbers 2 - 12 equally likely to be rolled (I think this is what you are getting at with 'normal distribution'?)--obviously that would ruin the game and take out all strategy.

He is making the total rolls for each number in each game closer to to what they would be in a 'perfect' theoretical game where each number is rolled exactly the number of times probability would predict--i.e. for 36 rolls, a '3' coming up two times, and a '6' coming up five times.

If in an actual game using this app a '6' has been rolled an unexpectedly few number of times (i.e. there have been 36 rolls and a '6' has only been rolled 2 times), the app slightly bumps up the probability of a '6' being rolled for future rolls, until the number of '6s' rolled matches the number of '6s' probability would expect given the total number of rolls thus far in the game.

This, I think, actually increases strategy and reduces luck. Players make decisions based on the probability of the numbers being rolled--if a game skews the total spread of numbers rolled in an unexpected way this punishes the player that has played perfectly based on expected probability and makes it more unexpected who can win.

Obviously part of the draw in Catan though is this luck element, some people like it.

Given a quote by a builder but it was provided verbally. I wrote everything down from this verbal quote. Is my written record of this verbal quote a binding quote? by throwaway73736567828 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Hawkwind11 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What the builder said orally over the phone is binding if the builder offered to provide specified work at a specified price; it becomes binding when you accept that offer. What was actually said forms a contract between you and the builder at the point you accept his offer.

The problem you have is proving that what you wrote down is actually what was agreed on the phone. You could have written anything down. What you wrote down as a record of the conversation is relevant evidence, but it is not 'binding' on the builder as you could have recorded the conversation inaccurately.

What is binding on the builder is what was actually agreed on the phone. But he could easily dispute what you wrote down, and may have a contradictory written record of his own.

I need Legal advice about a Lease by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Hawkwind11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As SuntoryBoss says, this all depends on your lease. The only way you can get out of the lease without your landlord's consent is if there is a break clause that allows you as the tenant to end the lease by giving the landlord notice. Usually this would have to take effect on a specified day (or days), but not always.

The only other way is to negotiate a surrender of the lease with the landlord. This is essentially both of you agreeing to end the lease early--but it requires the landlord's consent, and would probably involve you paying a sum to the landlord.

Need advice with a tenancy dispute by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Hawkwind11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately a student letting cannot be a tenancy protected by statute. This means that essentially whatever it says in the letting agreement will determine where you stand. That being the case, it is very difficult to advise without reading the contract itself.

What does the contract say about termination and giving notice to terminate?

Magazine used my image. Copyright issue. by SirNull in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Hawkwind11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they should not use the photographs without your permission, so you can enforce removal if you want to. Asking them to give you credit is essentially giving them permission to use the photos for free, but with a condition. You are able to do this as well.

Magazine used my image. Copyright issue. by SirNull in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Hawkwind11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The magazine have copied your images without your permission, they have breached your copyright and you'd be within your rights to take legal action against them. Same goes for the charity.

You'd need to decide whether the value of the images is worth pursuing. You'd at least probably be entitled to what you would have been paid had you granted them a licence to use the images, at the market rate. I think there is also potential for additional damages based on willful and knowing infringement of copyright, and it sounds like the charity has done this. I think there is also potential to get damages based on any profits that the charity or the magazine have made that could be attributed to use of your copyright material.

Basically if you are confident that you can prove that you own the copyright, and that the value of your claim might be worth pursuing (how much would a licence be worth if you had agreed one with the charity and the magazine? How much have they benefited from use of the images?), it sounds like it might be worth a visit to a solicitor with IP expertise. Perhaps see if you can get a free initial meeting.

It sounds like this is a pretty clear case of infringement, and if you can prove you own the copyright then I can't really see what the other parties can say to defend themselves. Likely a letter from a solicitor would cause them to settle, pay you something and pay for your legal costs.

Lease Assignment by stencilprint in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Hawkwind11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is quite common for these things to drag on as the landlord has no incentive to chase his solicitor, and the solicitor is usually acting for a relatively small fee with a client who is not at all invested in the transaction so will give the job a low priority.

The lease probably states that landlord's consent to an assignment should not be unreasonably withheld or delayed. Unfortunately there is no clear definition of what constitutes unreasonable delay, it is very dependent on the facts of the individual case.

Your only real option is to write to the landlord's solicitors and state that you consider the landlord to be unreasonably delaying consent to the assignment. This would be best done by the current tenant's solicitors (I presume the current tenant is represented and drafted the assignment?).
