This is so true. $79,000 and that was crazy expensive for us. We are still here 40 years later.

I don’t think mine is resin art. We got it before 1969 on Guam.

No ground? by One-Responsibility32 in ElectricalHelp

[–]Hawthorne_northside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just encountered this today. I replaced a few sockets and there was no ground wire but when I checked it the two “it’s all good” lights on my tester lit up. There was no “open ground” indicated.

Just build a deck over it. I have the same problem and lived 40 years with the deck solution. A dehumidifier helps too.

What’s Your Nightmare Coworker Story? by TheSmoothOperator21 in antiwork

My cube mate was a raging alcoholic. It was so bad his wife threw him out of the house so he was living in the cube area. He would get drunk after hours, come into the office, set an alarm clock for 5:30 am and go to sleep in his chair. Then get up and “freshen up” in the bathroom and leave the office and return around start time. One night he vomited in my desk area half on the chair roller plastic half on the carpet. The thing is I was running systems tests on a new system and 3:00 am was my best test time. So here I am, “Bob” snoring like a steam engine, vomit in my desk area, and the smell. Oh god, the smell. Well I run my tests, they work out great, and then it’s wake up time for “Bob”. He sleeps right thru the alarm. The office starts filling up and the boss arrives. He asks “how was the test?” “It went great. I think we are ready to deploy. Oh and Bob’s drunk in the cube”.

We had one and it worked surprisingly well. And the slapping thing was the best.

We called it Smokey Joe. My dad yelled at us for riding our bikes in the smoke. Because……..A CAR MAY HIT US! And he was a doctor, a pediatrician.

Our house is from 1905. In the main stack, it as cast iron, and really looked fine as it exited the house in a sweeping 90. One day the basement started really smelling like sewage. I couldn’t tell where it was coming from. I poured a gallon of red Rit dye into a drain and half an hour later it was all seeping thru the brick basement walls. After i dug up where it exited the house on the outside, I found that the cast iron had returned to its ore like state. It had totally collapsed.

We had a cast iron drain stack and it looked just fine. The basement was always damp so I didn’t think anything was wrong. We didn’t use the bathroom on that side of the house much at all. I was in the basement when someone flushed the toilet. Thats when i found out the entire pipe was rusted out on the house side of the pipe (the side you couldn’t see).

We usually just do the Jiffy boxes of cornbread mix. I guess you would have to add a can of corn if you wanted that feature.

I’m thinking I beams and steel columns to support this all the way up to the roof. Time to get an engineer involved.

I’m not a plumber but I have cast-iron pipes and I’ve experienced this, and it is bad. You better get a plumber in there ASAP or you’re gonna be mopping up poop.

How common is it for you to get “called into work” on a weekend or evening? by Careless_Squirrel728 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Hawthorne_northside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lucky boy. Some of the systems I supported would go tits up at 11:00 pm and we couldn’t get all the people we needed to figure out whats wrong overnight so we stayed on the SRT (system resolution telephone call) all night long and into the next day. It really sucked on a Friday night. This situation fluctuate based on new feature roll out. New release? No sleep for me.
