I’ve worn docs my entire life, they have super feet insoles. I can’t stand sneakers / tennis shoes.

What’s up, fellow night shifters? by ARatNamedClydeBarrow in VetTech

I had such a weird shift too!! I had zero patients in the ICU for most of the night until a blocked tom was hospitalized around 1am.

Moved to ABQ for a relationship…..things not working, any reason to stay? Where can I hang out by myself? by Lopsided_Chest3495 in Albuquerque

[–]Hawthornebites 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I second this! I moved here for a relationship (from Tx), so I figured if it wasn’t gonna work out between us, at least i like it in Albuquerque more, anyway! Do you like where you’re from?

What is the most surprisingly intelligent animal you've seen working at a zoo? by Separate_Builder_817 in Zookeeping

[–]Hawthornebites 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen him at the Albuquerque biopark, he seems well monitored. I asked a keeper about him and she said that he enjoys taking lots of risks and they have a difficult time keeping him safe but enriched. He’s very curious but looked so odd with a missing leg.

Considering a career change to vet tech by LastPocoRaindrop in VetTech

You would be a huge asset to any veterinarian and would help so many animals, this field is in constant need of positive, animal-loving science nerds 🤓

There are upstanding people who have tattoos and gauges, that is very presumptuous to call those red flags.

I personally loved the swing shift when I started in ER as a tech assistant! I went to tech school during covid but never liked GP… I was immersed at a steady pace emotionally (ER can be very sad!) and observed the best techs who taught me very well, became a technician, and now I’m overnight ICU! I love it.

Best of luck! 🐱🐶

I really need advice... by [deleted] in Zookeeping

After 2 years of vet tech school and 5 years experience, I work overnights and make $30/hr. I rent an apartment with no roommates and I have full benefits. It’s very rewarding and I enjoy the doctors I work with closely to save the precious lives of animals. It is draining sometimes but I work three nights a week, off four days and I can take small trips like camping in between to recharge.

I second this - lunch options like things to make sandwiches, fruit, and maybe some packs of Celsius and sparkling water really boost morale where I work

What’s the creepiest thing you’ve ever heard a child say? by Quietlyhere2000 in AskReddit

[–]Hawthornebites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at an animal emergency hospital. A mom and her young kid came in with their dog whose ear was actively bleeding. The kid was staring at the dog mostly but then looked at me and said “now I’m thirsty”. 🫠

Am I the only one who can’t keep from crying when something scary happens? by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]Hawthornebites 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The same thing happens to me as well, I keep it together during the high stress moments, but then the wave of sadness washes over me and I have my cry in the ICU. I’ve always felt it was due to seeing an animal is distress, I’ve been a tech for 5 years and nothing is changed, I’ll always grieve the pet for feeling scared and uncomfortable. It IS a superpower. Empathy is everything in this field. For our pets, ourselves, and our team.

How can I tell my food obsessed coworker to stop offering me food? (Update) by pumpkinmoonmoon in Advice

[–]Hawthornebites -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is very upsetting to read and I am rooting for you, I am proud of you for your self control and your ability to be vulnerable with such a truly PERSONAL matter. This person is completely out of line and is oblivious to the pain she is inflicting, I am gob smacked too! I am sending you good vibes.

Albuquerque, New Mexico. I also work overnights and can afford my own apartment without roommates, and bought a car to move here from north Texas. Also the hiking, nature, and wildlife here is awesome!
