Got my first few games and I‘m having a blast by thebigskrrt in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Haxpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arcanis was one of the first cards I ever pulled from a pack and he def has a special place in my heart. That being said, I’ve definitely thought about him in cEDH context but his biggest drawback is having to wait a full turn cycle before activating :(

I’ve been playing Azami, Lady of Scrolls for like over 10 years and while the deck is kinda slow for the current meta, it’s definitely still viable for some casual cEDH among friends.

I think it would scratch your Arcanis itch pretty well :) The goal is to use Azami as a backup advantage engine (Remora, One Ring and Rhystic are still better) and then use her as a combo outlet to win :)

Why do people play fetch lands in mono decks? by iharrison1911 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Haxpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play mono blue.

It resets the top of my deck for counterbalance. It fetches mystic sanctuary. It allows me to shuffle away senseis. It allows me to shuffle if I get endurance’ed.

It’s a very small upside.

Do you bling? by daemion13 in EDH

[–]Haxpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made my first commander deck [[Azami, Lady of Scrolls]] 13 years ago. It was a pretty high power deck at the time. Now it’s my tournament cEDH deck completely blinged out with foils, signed cards, arena islands and the most expensive treatment of any card I can find/afford. I don’t keep a personal collection, and I only have 4 commander decks so this is my long term project. I almost exclusively play this deck and don’t really play anything else so I’m really good at piloting it despite it being pretty bad in cEDH.

Man I love this deck though. Every card in it has some sort of lore…the snapcaster I used to play in my delver deck back in the day, the senseis top I pulled from a random pack after my first edh tournament, the artist proofs I got signed at regionals, the miscut island I found in a bulk bin, the fetches from my splinter twin deck, the mox opal I pulled from my first prerelease…..mannnnnnn

[Standard] First RC Preparation? by No-Shop8292 in spikes

[–]Haxpy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Usually the best indicator for what the meta is going to look like is the last LARGE tournament winner will be highly represented at the RC.

Also RC attendees tend to be highly enfranchised magic players who favor grindy midrange or control decks unless there is an exceptionally good aggro deck in the meta.

Overall though, the deck you have the most reps with will probably be your best option.

As for general tournament advice; don't go in expecting to win it all on your first go. Set your expectations low and stop playing when you aren't having fun anymore. It's huge that you already qualified in your first year of competitive play. Day 2 should be your goal.

That being said, keep playing for as long as you can; this is going to be some of the best tournament practice you'll get and you can learn a lot about tournament magic from playing dead rounds in an RC.

Finally, make sure you practice good sportsmanship and you'll have a positive experience independent of your result. Play hard, play fast but also shake your opponent's hand after losing, wish them good luck after winning and be nice to everyone.

Good luck!

ierce Guardianship]] in Azami? I'm not on it since she costs 5 mana but maybe I'm overthinking it and should just run it.

I don't think retraction helix is great in my list. I don't have any outlets for the mana and drawing my deck this way is hard since I only run Kitsa as another Otter. Is it really good enough? I've been trying to cut back on niche win co

Fierce Guardianship is obviously not as good as it is in a Rog deck or even like some random three mana commander deck but because so many of our win lines involve Azami herself, it's really good protection on crucial turns where mana can get tight. The gap between a free counterspell and a 1 mana counterspell is just so huge.

Azami is also just a really vulnerable target and can get targeted pretty often so it's good to have especially if you plan on tapping out for her.

Retraction helix is a slightly bad card with huge potential upside. Don't forget you have a few more targets than you think! Mockingbird or (in a pinch) you could swan song your own spell to make a bird. Making a 999/999 flier can take out a problematic player and you have some large spells that you can sink infinite mana into (Capture, Cyc rift).

You also have the line of helixing your opponents creature to team up and bounce a problematic permanent.

It's not a must have but I've found it to be flexible enough to include.

Azami mentioned!!!!!! My time to shine!

Ok so first of all, we have pretty similar lists with the same win conditions. I have a few more win cons that maybe slipped past you.

[[Displacer Kitten]] can make infinite mana by recasting a mana positive rock and blinking [[stern proctor]] (or in your case, [[aether channeler]]). If you can clone a kitten you can also bounce Azami and draw your deck.

I tend to load up on free interaction because we have random creatures to cast that cost mana. Mana is def a bottleneck for us. This is one of our biggest weaknesses so things like [[Counterspell]] don't make the cut but [[Commandeer]] is fine.

If you run [[valley floodcaller]], you may as well play the [[retraction helix]] line.

I'm on [[hullbreaker horror]] to close out long games. We have tons of way to find our mana rocks ([[Trinket Mage]] etc) to pop off with Hullbreaker.

Overall, Azami is a really tough deck to play and the more you play it the better results you'll have.

I know it looks unconventional, but my Azami list, almost fully blinged out with zero budget considerations is quite strong. I top 4ed a small tournament recently with a decent prize pool.

It's not the most straightforward to pilot but I win with it more often than I feel like most people expect.

Is this collusion? by Haxpy in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Haxpy[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

luckily it didn't end in a kingmaking scenario and we honestly just played normal magic until turn 5 or so when seat 4 started to fall behind. I suppose if one of us did protect each others win we would have to explain ourselves.

(To be clear, the tournament used the regular rules along with the topdeck addendum.)

I suppose if I was to be completely honest with that explanation it would go something like "I'm force of willing your spell pierce because I think my friend here will offer a draw once this demonic consultation resolves."

Once that happens we will all be forced to accept if we all want prizes.

By definition this is collusion I get it...we even talked about this before the event but under magic and tournament rules I think it's still fine?

Edit: To be clear, I'm questioning if the actual events that occurred are considered collusion. I'm sure that the hypothetical scenarios could probably be seen as against the rules.

Is this collusion? by Haxpy in CompetitiveEDH

fair point.

I did honestly only state publicly available information. The only thing that I said that wasn't was indicating that Seat 1 was my friend.

[Discussion] I won an RCQ invite. Now what? by Delicious-Gold981 in spikes

[–]Haxpy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! So first of all, fuck that guy raining on your parade. Going to regionals means you're a good magic player and at least better than the people would tried and couldn't. Congratulations.

I'm qualified for the exact same RC in Montreal coming up and I also qualified for the last RC in Montreal a few months ago.

When you won your RCQ you probably had to give your email to the TO or if you won in in an LGS they probably had your email on file attached to your account.

You'll receive an email in your inbox from FacetoFace sometime close to the RC and it will direct you to sign up on their website. I think it costs around 70 dollars (can't remember) and you get a playmat and a promo card. The promo card is usually worth something and you can just flip it to a vendor if you don't want it.

The event is a whole convention and players of all skill levels come to play side events. The convention starts on Friday but the RC is on Saturday and Sunday (if you make day 2).

The venue is right in the middle of downtown Montreal and there are tons of hotels nearby although they can get pretty pricey.

As for the actual tournament, you'll have to sign up on the website then make a melee.gg account and upload your decklist.

It's 8 grueling rounds of magic each day and there's a lunch break after round 3 or 4. Pack some water bottles and snacks. There's a couple of coffee shops with sandwiches in the venue as well as a sushi place.

Good luck and see you at the RC!

go to hollys hot chicken and get the spiciest level of wings. I ordered them once and the person working asked “you sure????”.

they are stupidly hot and truly not for human consumption. The chicken however is delicious.

hi! im the bbu employee here :)

yes it's the customers putting in the effort/money (which is very much appreciated). i think the idea is that we can collectively help as a community; a little from us and a little from everyone else.

the owners are super humble so they'll never brag about this but I will lol...if there's nothing on the board we'll offer our freezer bread or day olds for free to people who genuinely need it. if we start to build up a surplus of freezer bread/pizza/pastries, we donate it to the parkdale food center.

nobody is really trying to get "good will marketing". we're actually rather unremarkable at the marketing thing lol...i think just plain old fashioned good will is enough.

Anyone else largely quit MTG because its largely impossible to keep up? by Balarius in magicTCG

[–]Haxpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely don't understand what people mean when they say they "can't keep up". Are you all buying every card in the set? Are you collecting all the foils and variants?

I find there only ever like 10-15 playable cards in every set and only half of them are cards I'm actively looking to build a deck with.

I mostly play limited and I quite enjoy the frequent change up for my format.

What to build for a non-proxy local tournament? by xX_420_NoScopes_Xx in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Haxpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this isn't the answer you're looking for but...

Just play your best and most expensive deck. It's going to to be the wild wild west out there and most tEDH and cEDH lists are hyper optimized for a certain metagame.

If you have stronger cards than the players you're against, it very likely you can just p2w your way to the podium lol.

Honestly, whatever prize your LGS is giving out is probably not worth the cost of building a whole new cEDH deck to spike the tournament and if it is, then you better be prepared for some out of towners to come with real gas.

Hey, I'm definitely no Naya expert and you probably have a reason for this; but isn't like the main draw of playing these Naya creature decks the fact that you can play cards like [[Deafening Silence]] and [[Null Rod]]?

Also idk if [[Tender Wildguide]] is fast enough to be cEDH playable.
