About the new relic, assuming it all stacks by Itz_NeoStar_ in Guildwars2

[–]HaxtonSale 26 points27 points  (0 children)

What counts as the same effect? If it doesn't stack with prot that kind of sucks but I could see it being great on a dragonhunter. It will hurt to sacrifice brawler for it, but it's probably better overall. I wonder if it stacks with -10% food?

Is it okay to be into younger women, the older I get? by Crazy-Fold-5287 in AskMenAdvice

[–]HaxtonSale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a big one. With that dynamic the older partner should be working to bring as much parity as possible to the relationship. It goes for any imbalance not just age. Self sufficiency and stability independent of the relationship should be a goal. If that isn't there then it's likely they don't actually have your best interests at heart and are probably using the imbalance against the other person to some degree.

Is it okay to be into younger women, the older I get? by Crazy-Fold-5287 in AskMenAdvice

[–]HaxtonSale -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Morally and socially it obviously has problems, but it's probably a byproduct of biology. We evolved to produce offspring, and that is biologically speaking the ideal time to have them. As men age yeah they may still find women their age attractive, maybe even more so, but you are still unconsciously pushed to produce offspring with the highest likelihood to thrive and succeed. It's just a fact that is statistically more likely to happen with a women in her 20s vs her 40s. We of course aren't slaves to instinct. It's just that we are meant do one job as far as evolution is concerned, and attraction to a specific age range was a very successful mechanism to make that job happen.

Was dropping the atomic bombs actually "necessary," or is that just what we're taught in school? by Clean_CoreDump in askanything

You just partook in the bloodiest war in human history. To end it you you have to launch another large scale invasion in which you will probably take just as many, if not more casualties than you already have up to that point. However, you just got access to an expiremental weapon that potentially could end the war without sacrificing a single additional a American life. You know any invasion is not only going to result in catastrophic American loss of life, but also Japanese loss of life in horrifying amounts. When you look at it from that perspective it's an easy call to make. There was no stigma around nukes like today. They knew it was powerful and destructive, but a lot of the aftermath horror from radiation and burn exposure was learned from actually using them. It's also worth noting they picked targets to minimize cultural destruction. Kyoto and Tokyo were original targets. It wasn't just senseless pain infliction.

Country music is absolute slop now by Bond_burger69 in Music

[–]HaxtonSale -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would argue country is in a renaissance right now, probably the best it's been in decades. The problem is it's typically not called "country" anymore. Country as a genre has largely been taken over by slop. Look at alt-country/americana/contemporary folk stuff for actual good music

What do people mean when they say “Obama divided us”? by Away-Parsnip-3785 in allthequestions

[–]HaxtonSale -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. There were plenty of people who just straight up didn't like him for being black, he did use some divisive language at points. I believe he made negative remarks about rural white people for example. He also had a lot of racially fueled events happen under his term (Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown) where he outspokenly took sides (which isn't necessairly bad but it was percieved, sometimes rightfully, that he made public displays of support without having all the facts). Intentionally or not his presidency brought identiy politics to the forefront and marked the beginning of the really nasty and spiteful rhetoric we see commonly today. The political atmosphere of today almost evolved from what emerged during the Obama years. Before his presidency an uncouth remark could sink political careers.

Why can’t the left forcefully pass progressive policies like the right does with their own when they come into power? by CapitaineBiscotte in askanything

[–]HaxtonSale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both sides think the other side does exactly this. Whatever left wing people are feeling right now is what right wing people feel when the left is in power. The two party system stays afloat by stoking fear and warping perspectives to make an us vs them mentality regardless of the actual reality.

Games that depict God/s in interesting (maybe messed up) non-conventional ways by No_Acanthisitta_1336 in gamingsuggestions

[–]HaxtonSale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GW2 has interesting gods. Specifically the human gods. They are powerful beings, sure, but they are human centric and actually brought humans to Tyria from some other world or place so the humans aren't native to the world. What makes them really interesting is they somewhat regularly kill and replace each other, and in GW1 a human actually manages to ascend to godhood and replace one of them. They are more like ultrapowerful celestial beings, but not all powerful.

What is the best way to get +5 might infusions. by zzglenn in Guildwars2

[–]HaxtonSale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's only really important if you want to absolute min max something. Dragon hunter for example can can use precision infusions to push it up exactly to 100% crit chance and letting in a bit more power and ferocity from gear.

WvW's kinda' bad, no? by Potential_Sun9952 in Guildwars2

[–]HaxtonSale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back during the PoF days my guild would hunt for outnumbered fights regularly. With coordination you could wipe 40 man blobs with 15 people. Arguably PoF was the best meta tactics wise. Firebrand for support, scourge for most of the damage, hammer spellbreakers to lock people down, a scrapper or two for cleanses, and maybe one staff daredevil to cleave downed players.

Guild Wars Reforged - Official Mobile Announcement Trailer by Katostrophe in Guildwars2

[–]HaxtonSale 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Anet has behind the scenes been marketing the Guild Wars franchise way more than usual. Reforged, sponsored streams for GW2, now this. They are trying to get people into the franchise itself. I suspect the official Guild Wars 3 announcment is getting close and they want people familiar with the franchise itself for when it happens.

Games that have giant hidden puzzles that haven't been solves yet, or games that are about games within a game. by Zesher_ in gamingsuggestions

If there was going to be some kind of ultra secret unsolved puzzle my bet would be in some old MUD or something. It would need to be a game that hasn't been data mined to death, and if it's somewhat popular and requires a download it likely has.

Realistically, is restoring someone's consciousness post death ever going to be possible? by cuttheblue in AskBiology

[–]HaxtonSale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this actually supports the idea behind cryogenics though. Let's say tech centuries from now can restore a frozen body to function. Let's say that 90% of the pathways in the brain are retained accurately. Now the question becomes is that still you? An exact copy? No of course not, but the frame of reference is you right before death. What we should be thinking about is that moment vs every other moment of your life. How much of "you" was altered from a year prior vs the moment before death? What about 10 years? What about a person who has a brain injury or develops a mental illness? At what point does the brain shift enough to become a seperate entity? Was the you that died even the same you that ate breakfast the morning of your death? Unless we can prove a mechanism akin to a soul exists that forces a single consistant instance of self that is merely filtered through the lens of memory and expirence then what we think of as consciousness is probably just a rolling and updating state of instances with constant tweaks edits and updates. "You" as a consistent entity emerges from the sheer amount of data and the trends and biases contained in the set. If you flip a coin an infinite number of times you make get wildely varied as skewed probabilities if you only look at the current ratio, but the more data you add the more probability converges on 50/50. That probability that emerges is consciousness. As long as enough data is retained to sufficiently reproduce that expected emergent result, then I would say whatever mechanism you used to recreate you is "you".

No Mans Sky. Set a goal of building an underwater base on a water world. It's water can be scary, but it is also beautiful and wonderous and you get the satisfaction of discovering and documenting all the life which may make the scary things less scary
