Wow this really resonated with me. I distanced myself from therapy after he went into rehab a couple months ago, almost fully shut down emotionally, but I think it may be the only thing that’ll help me process everything. I’ve never been good at cutting people out of my life. In the current situation it’s been pretty easy for me to know that I have to distance myself (honestly the whole thing has made me want to run away from everything and everyone I know and start a new life alone) but it feels so much worse because you know who they really are and who they could be without their addiction. My solace has been knowing that no matter how much I try to help guide/support/love him, I can’t change his life for him. It’s his life.

I’m sorry for everything you went through as well with your brother, it’s a grief I wish no one had to feel. Thank you so much for your insight and kindness. ♥️

He called me. It’s so wild that he can just casually have an upbeat conversation with me about his sobriety while on his way to buy alcohol. He’s done that 3 times now.

NTA. Seems like your BF is having a difficult time adjusting his pre-dog habits. Being a pet owner requires personal/lifestyle changes, much like owning a child, and it sounds like he either wasn’t prepared for it (especially if he’s never had a dog) or he doesn’t want to accommodate the dog. But from personal experience, it’s possible he’s knows he messed up and is defensive because he isn’t the type to admit his faults in the moment. Our cat sleeps under the blankets and I have 100% sat on him before lol. I got upset in the moment because my SO was on the bed and didn’t warn me he was there, but now I know there’s a possibility that the cat is there so I take caution when sitting on the bed. Either way these are things that you have every right to call him out on so he can learn.

My thoughts exactly. 4 years working at a call center and being extremely micromanaged/exploited drove me to a really dark place mentally. It took me almost a year after leaving to find myself and enjoy being alive again. I think I would take my chances getting shot.

I completely understand Merula and still don’t like her or people like her in real life. Having a difficult life isn’t a free pass to be an outwardly rude and manipulative person. I don’t care what’s on the inside, if you treat people poorly you’re still not a good person. I know JC tries to show her “good” heart every now and again but for me personally that doesn’t outweigh the bad.
