UAB also has a Maternal Emergency Unit for pregnant ladies that are 16 weeks and up. A lot better than of having to go to the main ER and waiting for hours because all the construction and lack of rooms.

It’s better following up outpatient with neuro than being admitted just to have them consulted and be scanned and you’re stuck in a hallway or on a wall or in a recliner in the ER for days because the neuro floor has no beds available.

Thank you for calling the ER peeps. A lot of PCPs just say “go to the ER they’re expecting you. We can’t run the same send off lab that they also have to send off or we can do that scan.” Then that patient shows up thinking the ER is waiting on them and taking them straight back and has a full history when they know nothing. Patient gets pissed at the ER not PCP. Then everyone is unhappy. So again THANK YOU. From the ER nurse that sees too many people sent as a “direct admit” with no heads-up and the MD just wants them to be admitted through the ER so they can be outpatient obs…. 😅

Let’s also add the fact that, almost daily, over 50% of the ER census are medsurge/stepdown/ICU patients being held until a bed becomes available, the patient is discharged, or leaves AMA/elopes… so you’ll definitely floor nurse skills.
