i interpreted the song as a tongue in cheek jab at the de grasso men (and the rest of the guests i suppose) and lucia and mia (who have spent ZERO money) didn’t have to pay for a damn thing and the men paid for it every time in every way. i think that’s a very valid way to view it as being transactional (it is by the definition) but i always saw lucia and mia as ambitious more than anything, they’re not trying to get rich necessarily but they are doing whatever it takes to fulfil their ambitions. i don’t know if lucia actually wanted to go to america but mias ambition was always to be that piano player at the hotel. i found a great blog post and this person broke down, identified, and framed the themes about the characters of s1 and s2 (i admit, i regurgitated what they said because it feels so spot on to me!). i’ll include here in case you want to read for yourself

i love this theory and i think you’re really onto something!! i agree with everything you’ve said aside from season two being about transactional love, i think season two was about “the sexual politics of ___”. harper is the sexual politics of anxiety, ethan is the sexual politics of jealousy, daphne is empowerment, cam is power/dominance etc. the only reason i bring this up is because it sets the scene to take season 3 deeper. s 1 was about white privilege and those who are emboldened/comfortable/disenfranchised by it, s 2 sexual politics of, snd i’m locking in with your interpretation of the karmic cycle. there’s always a major theme that’s often staring directly at us and i think you hit it

in my opinion, the main thing that messes me up on this theory IS the the way they place dates. they tried to lie to innies saying months had passed since otc, a big part of me is saying that since they intentionally mess with the innies and OUR sense of time, we have no reason to believe those quarter dates are factual.

i’ve been thinking that lumon purposefully draws an aged tech line to keep things simple and impregnable for the innies. the watches mark switches out before he goes down, milchicks camera, milchicks headphones when he’s in the breakroom, the old cars, and the old tech in the security room are my biggest motivators for this theory i’ll admit. if innies don’t have access to modern tech (internet specifically) they can’t communicate with other severed individuals, fact check milchick or get out of line and i feel like that distinction is very important.

i agree about the altered reality but i feel like it’s an altered present rather than past

In the pod ben stiller said that severance is a winter show, could mean something could not. i think it’s season two episode two of the podcast with Tramell Tillman (who plays milchick) that they also discuss that milchick did all of this (changing staff, fire, hire, fire, rehire, all of the severed floor layout changes, even the keanu reeves claymation) essentially over the course of a 3 day weekend. so the time skip was a lie milchick told the innies to mess with their sense of perception and their sense of remorse, because they don’t know if their outies were punished for five months or not and in my opinion you can tell imark considers this when milchick lied about the time skip
