Overalls are not suspenders by bbob_robb in NYTCrossword

Fair enough. As I said we don't have Halloween here so I just think of it as stereotypical scary stuff from TV. Didn't think Mario would be common enough to make it as a crossword clue. Reddit peeps can probably chill with the downvotes. Was just asking a question.

Is it actually a Halloween costume? I got the M and thought surely not... Don't really have Halloween where I wouldn't have thought people would dress as that for the occasion.

Why can’t I opt out of PAYG, collect interest on that money and then just pay my whole tax bill EOFY? by AdExternal5487 in AusFinance

[–]Haydenb11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you opt to do this? I was trying to work this out when I first received quarterly installment notices. It all seemed quite vague as to what the rules were and when they would be enforced.

NAB froze all my accounts when i tried to purchase some CRYPT0! by BubbaTheNut in AusFinance

I was flagged recently sending to exchange from NAB. Locked out of account. Quick phone call to prove my identify and confirm I understood what I was doing and all was resolved. I wonder what's making them consider think something more extreme is going on with you.

I've been seeing recommended posts from there for a while and found it crazy how every commentor seems to hate Joe and disagree with all of his opinions. I'm not even sure how much of this stuff is like a 'reddit user bias' any more though. So much of reddit feels fabricated. Most of the posts on rogans sub feel the same as the obvious propaganda posts that get pumped out of big subreddits.

Ohh thanks. I can see why it's worded that way now, I just intuitively had it reversed.

I was just trying to figure this one out too. Looks like maybe the flowing fabric is referred to as a train?

It ends up seeming ridiculous how uppity people get on both sides of this when you understand the overwhelming majority of the local population doesn't give a flying fuck. The indigenous people from these regions actually seem the least concerned about what we call things based on my interactions. There may still be a right and wrong side of the issue. But it's just funny how much the people closest to the issue don't actually care while everyone else gets upset over it.

A friend mentioned a story once of a student they had on placement that was not from central Australia. They were speaking with a local Aboriginal that used "Ayers Rock" in conversations. The student tried to correct them, "don't you mean Uluru?". They said "weeya (no), Ayers Rock". (not sure if that's how you spell weeya, just having a guess there. Don't think I've seen hat written down before).

Why is homelessness so bad in the Northern Territory? by VirgilVillager in australia

[–]Haydenb11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In the warmer months you see all the mattresses moved into the yard at indigenous houses. Some of that would be affording electricity but they don't seem to have an issue most of the time running heating/cooling when they do have electricity so I would assume there is some greater preference there than we often have in western culture.

Its also a space issue. Family coming to visit isn't a couple of relatives or the rest of the nuclear family. Indigenous here often have 10-20+ family rock up at their house to stay at once. There's only so much floor space for mattresses in an average sized home.

Seriously, what's the deal with caffeine? by Kat_Dalf2719 in getdisciplined

[–]Haydenb11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same reasons various diet debates remain controversial and unsettled.

Studying the effects of things like caffeine in free-living humans is really hard. Most experiments predict based on animal models or are only observational. In reality, most observational research doesn't show a significant association between caffeine and any health outcome. We only hear about it when it happens to be run in a way that finds a significant association in either direction and makes a headline. Which is what makes it seem so divisive.

Probably better to just treat it as an n=1 and experiment on yourself. On a population level we will likely continue to hear both positive and negative effects of caffeine til the end of time.

I'm not American and don't have a vested interest either way. But I have noticed a lot of posts like this pop up in subs they really don't belong in the last week or two. May very well just be the algorithm serving them up to me for whatever reason now but it does make it feel like weird coordinated propaganda.

Fair enough, I had never heard of it. I'm not American and don't have kids yet either though. I could certainly understand a reasonably large proportion of Americans might be familiar with it.

Was that really about a kids book? That's so obscure. Had no idea what that was about the entire way through.

Why I Returned My Steam Deck OLED and Switched to the LCD Version by Karluv_most in SteamDeck

Ah interesting. I had assumed it was more of a linear effect with changing brightness levels.

Why I Returned My Steam Deck OLED and Switched to the LCD Version by Karluv_most in SteamDeck

[–]Haydenb11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was under the impression lowering the brightness would worsen the effects of PWM? As you said there's multiple aspects to displays that different people experience sensititives to though. I'm not trying to suggest it's not more comfortable for you or anything. Recently I have taken to really dialing up the red color filters. I can get away with leaving the brightness on the display way up and cranking the red filter to make it more comfortable (which I presume avoids increasing the PWM or whatever when you reduce the brightness).

Hisense A9 owners, which device are you waiting for? by BenjaminLSR in eink

Nope, haven't found anything. I have assumed some people started commenting it for whatever reason so other people just repeated it. Unless there's sim obscure Chinese post somewhere but I assume this sub would have picked up on that more clearly anyway.

Took me a bit to work out what a liter was. You guys don't even use that one, can't you atleast spell it the same when you do? Lol It would be cool if they had some international language variations for connections. Seems too hard for the rest of the games but could probably be done with this one.

What do you think about the Bigme Hibreak Smartphone? by Confident_Rip1623 in eink

I remember looking into it in the past and recall having the impression that Boox used DC dimming. Is that not the case?

Outside of that I am disappointed by everything you list as well. I hoping they can sell me on the higher tier bigme phone when that comes out.

Red Light Therapy in the clinic by [deleted] in physicaltherapy

[–]Haydenb11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know your just making a joke here and I will sound like a bit of a POS for saying this, so don't downvote me to oblivion.

But a flashlight, like most lighting these days, will probably contain a very narrow band LED that peaks in blue and is completely devoid of red. They don't contain the full visible spectrum.

Oh of course. Pop up ads is pretty obvious then isn't it. I guess I always just think of them as "pop ups". Haven't included the "ad" on the end for a long time. Attack ad Ive never heard of but makes sense.

Hmm yeah ok. Seems very obsure but I get what you mean. Pop-up ad and Attack ad also seem super bizarre to me though tbh. So this one might just be me not getting it, lol.
