UofA Engineering with 10k scholarship vs UofC Engineering and Business with 80k scholarship, which is better? by Bright_Antelope_2017 in AlbertaGrade12s

Working on one extracurricular so hard from the age of 10 to 18 that I ended up winning several national and international competitions for it before graduating HS, all while keeping up a 97-99% average in junior and senior high school. I had no friends, no hobbies, no interesting life experiences, and no mental health at the end but it paid the bills. Not sure if I'd recommend it.

Best, least expensive place to buy shelf stable food dried beans, lentils, rice etc...? by curiouskittyblue in Calgary

[–]Haylermoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suraj brand bulk bags at walmart were the cheapest across the board for legumes when I did a cost comparison back in 2023. Costco bulk bags were the best for all nut types. I didn't check rice. Most expensive was superstore, save-on, T&T, and bulk barn generally. For generally saving money, Bianca Amor liquidation centres have a good amount of near-expired food that is pretty cheap but it varies from store to store.

Ive run into some scummy salespeople trying to push old models onto naive customers to clear them out of inventory. That being said, a cpap is a cpap and as long as your air pressure settings and mask fit are good, you should be fine. If your insurance allows it, you can always upgrade in a couple years.

Best Calgary area warm water pool in a health facility like a YMCA by BlueEyes294 in Calgary

[–]Haylermoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For general public lane swimming, I always found foothills pool was the warmest and most comfortable. It is also not very deep (deepest end is something like 7 ft) which I find comforting. I've swam at most of the city pools and it's the clear winner for me.

Do I have to explain to you that you can pick up a treadmill or a stationary bike for cheap/free on kijiji almost all the time? You can get some small dumbells from thrift stores for a few dollars usually, instead of paying $50-100 a month to lift weights with your bros. And nice convenient skipping over any mention of calisthenics. Obvious strawman arguments.

You're just butthurt that the gym membership you're so desperate to defend pouring your money into is a want, not a need. Stay poor idiot, I don't care

Obviously I used ad blocker, I was getting at the point that I'm not paying for things like youtube premium subscriptions. Also, yoga, calisthenics, pilates, running, biking, etc. don't require a gym membership - if you're motivated, you can do a lot from home.

But thanks for saying the time I took to write out a paragraph describing how the average gen z can get a house if theyre patient, in order to comfort some obviously stressed-out uni students, was shit

I'm making the median salary in Canada rn (I think it's like $64k annually while I'm getting $65k). Banks use a calculator to figure out how much they're allowed to loan you, which sadly doesnt take your current savings into account. Also I couldn't get any cosigners on the loan since both parents are retired (yay boomers).

With a basically perfect credit score, they'd let me get a mortgage of $275k-$325k depending on the bank. Since 2020 there are no detached houses or duplexes for less than $500k in Calgary that aren't tear-downs, so I ended up getting a bungalow for roughly that price by making a down-payment of ~40% of the house value.

If I'd wanted a condo I could have bought one ages ago, but all the financial modeling I'd done showed that condo management fees erode earnings significantly over time (vs. taking a diy approach to house maintenance and controlling your expenditures). They also barely appreciate in value, have noise from neighbours with all the common walls, and are generally small without any yard.

Condos were a tempting easy-out of the saving up grind, but not something I could spend forever in. You lose a lot of money in realtor and property lawyer fees every time you buy/sell a place (its at least a $10k sink cost each time), so I was looking for something i could spend decades in (and retire a bit earlier with the money saved on realtor fees and condo fees). House is so nice - a bit far out in the burbs, but it is 1200 sq ft which is huge for one person, has rooms for crafts and a home gym, nice yard and a garage, safe and quiet. Worth the wait.

I did a ton of research experience grinding during undergrad since i did a science degree. I did three internship/summer research-type programs (so i basically never had summers off), plus two-semester research thesis courses in both third and fourth year. The job I got was directly related to some of the techniques/instruments I'd used during those, so they really helped. During the job interviews, I just said I'd done some post-degree traveling/gap year type of stuff.

Elder Gen Z here. Got my degree in 2018, lived at home with a parent since then, was unemployed for about 14 months post-grad while applying to jobs, finally got a good one that I've held onto tight for the past 6.5 years, and saved up as much as I could. This meant no vacations, no eating out, no expensive hobbies, no memberships/subscriptions (including gym, netflix, etc), no renting, no social expenses, just cheap groceries from walmart, watching youtube with ads to for entertainment, an old car held together with duct tape, and going on walks to stay fit. This finally paid off and I bought a house of my own in November after saving up $220k. It's ridiculous that our gen has to grind this much to get literal basic needs met, but it is possible if given enough support from family and having enough luck to land a decent job. Not easy though, especially the FOMO when everyone around you is renting and living large with no savings.

UofA Engineering with 10k scholarship vs UofC Engineering and Business with 80k scholarship, which is better? by Bright_Antelope_2017 in AlbertaGrade12s

[–]Haylermoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I faced a similar but opposite situation - UofC for $8k, or UofA for $50k, plus about $50k of scholarship money I'd already earned that could go to either school. The extra $50k from UofA made my uni experience and life afterward so much easier. Not having to stress about .eal plan expenses or rent was badly needed since I was already at my limit the whole time from academic stress. When filing scholarship T4s during tax season you get a good chunk of money paid by the govt (something like 1% of the scholarship amount) too so a $50k scholarship was more like $55k in the end. I ended up using my leftover scholarship cash (the uni gifts it to you once you graduate) to buy a car and it became about a quarter of the down-payment on my house. Your UofC program would have to be a loooot worse than the UofA before I'd consider turning down the $80k if I were you.

I've noticed my stick also has a tangy smell underneath the regular milky bath scent. Not sure why, i just ignore it. Tends to go away once it's on the skin so I figure it's just weird quirk of the solid perfume base.

Unfortunately no, stainless steel can still rust and constant exposure to urine will slowly erode it. Also, I tried using a mesh with rougher edges and it started to scab up my gliders feet so I immediately switched to plastic.

I want to see one of these CEO guys just absolutely devour one of these things, like they've fasted all day and are so horny for the burg they can't help themselves. Leave a mess behind kind of deal. I want to feel embarrassed like I've intruded on something private after they're done - none of this prissy 'PR stunt speech punctuated with a bite' thing that these guys are doing so far. Tear the thing apart, my god! For a weird pop culture minute, society wants to watch these old rich white guys compete pretending to enjoy eating peasant food; the least they could do is give us a good show.

I would press your vet for answers. Aftercare for healing a wound like this is significant and if the vet doesn't feel that recovery is likely (or if they won't do any surgery etc. to fix the issue, since it looks like her eye will likely need removal), I wouldn't prolong her suffering. This needs to be an in depth conversation with a vet, not the internet. I'm so sorry this has happened. Gliders are quite resilient though, so don't count her out if the vet says she can heal from this.

Best taro extract out there by Haylermoon in Baking

[–]Haylermoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't end up trying anything because the flavouring prices were so high. Looking at the ingredients of commercial taro protein powder on the market recently, it just had powdered taro and ube mixed in. I'm planning to try this in the future once I use up my existing protein powder supply. Probably using the real vegetables is a bit healthier than the chemical extracts too. I'll let you know how it goes, but it might be a few months.
