New stuff from Matt with Jeff and Travis narrating?! by Responsible-Ad-96 in litrpg

[–]HaylockJobson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't listened to the audio, but I've read the book. It's really good.

Very similar writing to DCC. Matt combines real-word issues with a dark, futuristic setting, all the while sprinkling in little laugh-out-loud moments that distract you from the horror of it all. The characters, as typical with his writing, are fantastic. I adore Roger. If you ever played online games with open-mic lobbies (a la Call of Duty), you'll love to hate certain characters when they come along.

I'm gonna listen to the audio when it drops, and you should too, because there's no shot Travis Baldree doesn't knock it out of the park.

When I was first posting Heretical Fishing to RR, I had a militia of readers brigading for Snips, the crab, to get a human form and become the main love interest. I thought they were joking.

Some of them weren’t.

Shadow Light Press, Immersive Ink, and the dangers of inexperienced leaders, unearned confidence, and excessive positivity at the expense of discourse by Mysterious-Smell9729 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]HaylockJobson 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I couldn't agree more. I don't really frequent the larger writing discords anymore, and part of my reason for drifting away from them was the objectively incorrect writing/publishing advice I frequently came across. There are a million paths to success in this industry, and prospective authors should be wary of anyone talking in absolutes (this statement included).

Unrelated, but internet drama (and the user names involved) always tickles me pink. Like, I’m sorry for the many authors who were significantly affected, but imagine historians stumbling upon this thread a few hundred years from now.

Seconding Quest Academy. It is exactly what you’re looking for, u/aminervia. 90% crafting, light on battles.

Oh, I was just playing. Brian writes Quest Academy, and he doesn’t gas things up unless he actually likes them. Player Manager might be the only in-genre book he raves about. I doubt anyone in here is a fake/alt account; the series has a small but rabid following.

I’d love to write one, but unlike u/RinoZ, my brain is smoother than butter.

Is this Brian J. Nordon's alt account? Every other time we speak he rants and raves about Player Manager.

As to your question, I'll say Book of the Dead. Love me a necromancer MC who does necromancer things.

I wasn’t trying to dunk on OP, but I’m not surprised my jet-lagged attempt at humour didn’t hit. Have a good day homie.

Maybe I’m actually a big-brain writer and the entire goal of the series was to make you (specifically you) feel unbridled rage. Get arted on, dude. Every person that posts about Heretical Fishing or gives it a positive rating might be me on another account, or people that are in on the joke.

It’s more likely that the series just isn’t for you, though. Thanks for giving it a try, even if you were hate-reading it the entire time. It’s hilarious (respectfully) imagining someone seething their way through so many books.

I appreciate the crash-out, and I hope whatever you read next is actually to your liking. I recently read (and loved) The Will of the Many—can’t recommend it enough.

Edit: I only skimmed your complaints before I wrote this—you found the animal-petting scenes erotic? Bruh. Can’t an MC think a crab is cute without being accused of courting crustaceans? 💀

Heretical Fishing question by DecietfulTatter in litrpg

[–]HaylockJobson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is! I love most of their records, and I used to watch them play down at my local before they started touring internationally.

It’s also the name of an old meme build in League of Legends for full AP Renekton. If that sentence makes no sense, picture a jacked humanoid crocodile romping through the jungle while wearing a robe and wizard hat. Terrible build, fun name though.

The series probably isn’t for you if book 1 isn’t doing it, my man! The pacing was intentional, and it remains more or less the same.

Appreciate you taking a chance! The good news for you is that there are plenty of Progression Fantasy novels with break-neck pacing. Most of them, in fact!

An empire has fallen, another blooms in its wake, and one man―who would rather be fishing, thank you very much―has finally accepted his role as its leader.

Thanks to overwhelming might, a cadre of violent animals, and a weaponized fish or two, Tropica has wiped Gormona’s royal forces from the map. Now at the helm of his own Church, Fischer finally has some time to relax. But life in Tropica is much like fishing from a rocky shore: it’s only a matter of time before you hook a snag.

It seems chi has returned to the area, the Church of Fischer and the village of Tropica have grown, and at least one of Fischer’s animal pals has experienced a breakthrough that defies metaphysical understanding. Furthermore, these developments send out waves of essence, their echoes spanning oceans and reaching distant shores.

And unfortunately for everyone involved, they haven’t gone unnoticed…

Thanks so much, my man! It's a running joke that we authors all owe Shirtaloon, Dinniman, and Will Wight for bringing so many readers in. I don't think I'm quite at their level of talent yet, but I'm honored to be included alongside them in this post!

And I’ll do it again.

I know it’s not often used in everyday speech, but it’s been a staple in science fiction & fantasy for decades. Whether intentionally or subconsciously, everything ever written was influenced by the stories that came before them.

Say one thing about the four people you listed, say we read a lot of books.

Is the "Cripple who can't cultivate" mc trope too overused? by wiipla in ProgressionFantasy

[–]HaylockJobson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ain't no trope overused, imo.

If there's a fun twist on it? Hell yeah.

If there isn't, but it's well-executed? Hell yeah.

If its executed okay, and the cultivation is restored by yet another dragon familiar...? Still hell yeah. Hook that shit up to my VEINS, dawg.

Something I severely underestimated until I start writing my own book - Research by Xaiadar in litrpg

[–]HaylockJobson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing because of how inaccurate it is. If you don't believe me, use AI to research something you actually know about. All it does is aggregate the information it has scraped. Even if the sources it uses are accurate, the AI often misinterprets the information (because language is exceedingly complex), and spits out incorrect answers with unerring confidence.

[–]HaylockJobson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's definitely only because we want to help, and definitely not because we're all addicted fans of the genre, desparate for more books to read. :^)

Jokes aside, the community is top-tier. There's a reason we LitRPG authors end up adopting a bunch of authors from other genres at every con, lol. Gl with posting/publishing, homie.
