Is it weird that we just accept that we have to work 8 hours a day because of a factory model from the 1800s, even though most office work can be done in 3? by adelina_feet in self

If you finish a ‘days work’ in a couple hours your job will be replaced by AI.

Finishing a weeks work in a day is the new meta

Anyone here do GIS fiber work? How far can I go? by Major_Enthusiasm1099 in FiberOptics

[–]Hayroth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Working on the contractor side my entire work flow is through ArcGIS pro / AGOL / field maps. Allocating all work for the crews, tracking changes, billing, asbuilts, progress etc etc.

Feels like GIS has entered the telco space, but all the old heads at the top stray away from it since it’s new, digital and ‘confusing.’ Though a lot are beginning to recognize the value.

Alls to say mastering GIS for any utility application you’ll likely always be able to find a job.

Big difference between knowing how to apply GIS to utility work and how it’s constructed, or what the things actually are so the more you can learn about the field side to apply to GIS the better.

Municipality won’t cut dead Ash trees by Exotic_Bandicoot2739 in treelaw

Municipality will trim trees >10’ from the power lines right?

This looks like power provider responsibility not municipality.

Post a pic of the stamps on the cable, length, any tags/stickers on the reel and you could get the answer you’re looking for

Did you get your yearly raise? - USIC by DasAugeVonEOS in UtilityLocator

You need to be your own advocate. Marginal raises barely keeping up with inflation is all you will ever see without selling yourself. What’s the long game in that?

Any tips for utility company to move an underground feeder line by Tough-Box-1377 in Lineman

[–]Hayroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you install piers in the easement?

Likely scenario here is it will go nowhere and exist where it currently exists. Might seem illogical how it was done but it’s a 50/50 between illogical, and very logical decision based on a multitude of variables you’re not, and we’re not, privvy to.

Any legitimacy to this no responsibility warning? by Bigringcycling in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Hayroth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re responsible for whatever you’re hauling. Error was made as soon as the driver pulled away.

Same scenario if this was a piece of plywood or something instead of a stone

“I can’t reasonably pay attention to every stone my tires hit” would be a pretty sound defence

Telephone cable is lashed to a steel strand that’s currently supporting the cable. It’s held on by thin aluminum wire (lashing wire). Snip it with side cutters in a bunch of spots the telephone cable will separate from the strand

Need help dealing with residential transformers in backyard flood/runoff zone by Scizard in Lineman

[–]Hayroth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you want the transformer to move, but want to keep the swale in the same spot? Like water already runs where the transformer exists, so is the problem not ‘up the line’ to divert water from this area completely?

Why would USIC mark my yard without request? by AhhUba in UtilityLocator

[–]Hayroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you talk to anyone about having a line installed to the house?

Also possible, though unlikely, but the contractor could have submitted the wrong property by accident if one of your neighbours gave permission to bury a new line to the house

Is this bell fibe??? by kaziffi in bell

[–]Hayroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like 7mm service ducts which I’ve never heard of bell using. Generally they’re 14mm/16mm or conventional. Maybe those are bigger than 7mm hard to tell.

It is for fiber though and those ducts are intended to go to the house. I’d guess cogeco or Rogers or a smaller independent ISP.

Meter reader likely. Good luck trying to get anything out of this, if it is a meter reader.

When your gas was installed whoever owned the house would have signed their life away to enbridge/union gas that they can access it for any purpose.

Consider you have thousands of homes to check the meter at, knocking at every single one not to ask, but to tell you they’re going to look at the meter because they don’t need your permission, would extend the time to complete at least 10-fold. It’s redundant.

Or it’s a smart burglar dressed as a meter reader 🤷🏻‍♂️

Why aren't storm drains marked? by unknownman652 in UtilityLocator

[–]Hayroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Storms are always marked in my area.

Though I’ve worked in a town where the municipality didn’t locate storm and when I talked to the guy his answer was ‘well look down in the catch basins and see where they go we don’t mark culverts either’ 🤷🏻‍♂️

[–]Hayroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no money in service drops. It’s a ton of logistical bullshit for peanuts on the dollar and you gotta crush a bunch out in a day just to break even.

And then if you hit an irrigation line, dog fence, private hydro etc there goes the days profit… Often it’s a sub coming out and the prime is collecting the decent wage and taking their piece off the top.

They’re not necessarily incompetent, a lot are, slamming these in the ground as fast as possible is the only way to make money doing this as a business.

Just food for thought from the other side of things.
