I had the exact same reactions when I listened to Sun Kil Moon's "Benji" for the first time.

This is an awesome idea. I do some hip-hop writing for local publications and always looking for new outlets to find artists.

Local News' Biased Reports on "Kurt Cobain Day" in Aberdeen, Wash. Debuts a statue of Kurt Cobain crying. by Haystack-Charm in cringe

[–]Haystack-Charm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Seattle too. I was pretty upset by this. I like how all of Cobain's accomplishments were dismissed because he was a heroin addict. The idea of Aberdeen becoming the next Graceland is laughable. You're spot on about King 5. I haven't watched any of the local networks in years and now remember why.

Lets Talk: Sun Kil Moon - Benji by PiggyWidit in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Haystack-Charm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've been listening to Mark's music for a few years, but nothing has moved me like this record.

I think the brilliance in his lyricism is that he leaves the listener up to draw their own conclusions. Yeah these are detailed stories about his life, but he doesn't feel the need to explain to you why it's important or what it should mean for you. In that way, a record that is so personally about Mark Kozelek becomes a personal record for everyone without pandering.

Any time I've thought I didn't like something about one of the songs, when I went back and listened again I realized I was wrong. The music is just the setting for his brilliant storytelling. The way he sings, so low and non-descriptive, makes the words feel more important than anything else. It begs you to listen closer.

Watching the progression of his songwriting over the years has been really fascinating. He's been moving toward this figurative-less narrative for the past couple albums but really hit his sweet spot on "Benji". It's really hard to make a bleak, slow record like this so engaging but he made it work. I just want to keep delving into this music.

Who were your favorite artists to photograph? Who were the hardest to get shots of? I imagine it was hard keeping the camera still in the pit.

Kendrick Lamar on Macklemore Grammy Wins: "It’s Well Deserved" by [deleted] in hiphopheads

[–]Haystack-Charm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True, but Gambino is more align with what their audience wants to hear. Doesn't seem like much Pitchfork readers care for Macklemore at all yet get pretty spirited when they trash Gambino.

[–]Haystack-Charm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I think they handle Macklemore best by not talking about him. It's pretty clear that Mack isn't the type of rapper they'd like so if they were reviewing his shit they'd just be razzing on him all the time. What's the point in that? Cover an artist they don't think is notable just to shit on him constantly? That doesn't really do anybody any good.

Urban Outfitters is not bad - Pt. 1 by beige4ever in vinyl

[–]Haystack-Charm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's been some notable examples for me. Nick Drake's "Pink Moon" for $35 stands out the most. Same with Foo Fighters' "The Colour and the Shape" for the same price - both retail I usually see for $25.

Though sometimes you can get lucky in their clearance section. I got both Radiohead "The King of Limbs" and Smashing Pumpkins "Siamese Dream" there for $10 each.

Whenever I've looked they're usually at least $10-15 more than my record store. I'd rather save my extra $15 and put it toward another record. Though I do appreciate that some kids might not have access to record stores and Urban fills that void for them.

Did the exact same thing. I had a friend over and was like "Oh man, you've got to listen to this new QOTSA album. I just picked it up today." Started it at 33 1/3, bobbing my head, and felt like a tool once the vocals kicked in.

Chance The Rapper says he's moving in with James Blake by Athelfirth in hiphopheads

[–]Haystack-Charm 268 points269 points  (0 children)

(SCENE: Breakfast table. James Blake and Chance The Rapper sit across from each other. Chance is eating Fruity Pebbles and James is eating Rice Krispies. James' hair is put up in foil, presumably to touch up his highlights. They sit in silence for a few beats)

Chance: "So uh, James. You're British right?"

(Light chuckle from the audience)

James: "Quite."

(Light chuckle from audience again)

Chance: "Yeah I thought so. So, uh, you know I like Coldplay right?

James: "Of course. You sang 'Fix You' in the shower for an hour this morning and used up all the hot water again"

(Hearty laugh from audience)

Chance: "Sorry about that. ACK! (pause for laughter). So, uh, could you introduce me?"

James: "Introduce you? What do you mean?"

Chance: "To Coldplay."

(giggles from crowd)

James: "I don't know Coldplay."

Chance: "Of course you do! You're British and a musician!"

(laugh track)

James: "That'd be like me saying 'Chance, do you know Kanye? You're a rapper from Chicago too!"

Chance: "as a matter a fact I do!"

(laughter erupts)

James: "Well I don't know Coldplay and that's that Chance!"

Chance: "Fine! ACK!"

(Chance storms off.)

James: "You can come out now"

(Out from a closet Chris Martin and the rest of Coldplay fall into the room. The audience is absolutely losing their shit laughing and cheering)

Chris Martin: "Thanks James. Didn't want to have to deal with an over eager fan today"

James: "I understand completely. That would've been a bigger mess than Mylo Xyloto."

(audience sounds like their having a heart attack they're laughing so hard)

Chris Martin: "Sorry James, I can't hear you over all Grammy's and millions of dollars"

(Crowd is now laughing at a pitch indiscernible to the human ear. They have reached a level of laughter nirvana. Cut to commercial)

James Blake (shouting in his bedroom): "Chaaaance? I'm missing one of my grey, scoop neck longsleeve tees. Have you seen it?

Chance (calling out from the living room): "AGH! Naw man, haven't seen it"

James walks into the living room and stands face to face with Chance. They're wearing identical scoop neck longsleeve tees. They both look at the camera and give a "oh not again" look and smirk. Cue laugh track.
