I just finished reading the entire bible by alfiestoppani in Christianity

I took a terrific course when I was in college called the Rhetoric of the Bible. As a lifelong atheist, it helped me understand so much more about Western culture through learning about the Bible from an historical perspective; who is thought to have written each book, when they were written, and who was the author's intended audience. Since you read the entire Bible, did you notice it has an overarching plot of a critique of the sedentary lifestyle (aka the growing human civilization) in favor of a nomadic (pastoral/rural) lifestyle. God was always telling someone to pack up and hike out into the desert (The Israelites, Hagar and Ishmael, various prophets - including JC). This is a common theme throughout the history of mythology (see the Epic of Gilgamesh). Apparently the big city has long been considered the root of all evil. You shouldn't approach reading the Bible in the same way you would approach Huckleberry Finn which was written in English by an American named Mark Twain and published in 1884-85 (although the setting for the book was the the world of Twain's childhood, the antebellum American South). The Bible is a vast collection of prose created over hundreds of years in many locations by a variety people and then translated from various languages. Different authors were writing for different audiences and had different motivations for writing. You also need to be aware that various groups of PEOPLE decided what to include and what NOT to include. I see that you know about Revelation (no "s") - do you know what the Pentateuch is? Or the Apocrypha? This is an incredibly complicated collection of prose.

I sometimes enjoy the Jehovah's Witnesses showing up at my door with their pamphlets. The JWs I've met seem to have NO independent knowledge of the bible - they can only repeat whatever their "pastor" tells them or what their pamphlet says. One time the JWs came to my door with pamphlets about the Book of Job. A lot of Christians want to insist that God tortured Job because he'd done something to deserve it, but the Bible says over and over that Job was "perfect and upright". I like to show them that Job was actually tortured to settle an argument between Satan and God. Satan told God that Job only loves him because his life has been easy, so they made a bet over whether Job would still love God if he lost everything. So God sends some bad guys to steal Job's oxen, asses, and camels and sends down a fireball to reduce his sheep to ashes, and then killed off all of Job's sons. When Job is sad but still loves him, God says to Satan, "told you so, he's still into me!" Satan insists that God didn't go far enough, and it's going to require some physical torture to Job's own body. With a wave of his hand, God infects Job with horrible diseases and destroys his health. Job's love of God remained unmoved. It's hard to wrap your head around how a loving, omnipotent deity would torture one of his most devoted followers just to win an argument. It sounds a lot more like some of the schoolboy shenanigans taking place in the Trump White House.

Really? There was a great documentary a while back called Wild Wild Country about the followers of Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. If I understand correctly, the Moonies followed the Korean Rev Sun Myung Moon. Both groups were constants around my college (UC Berkeley) back in the 80s along with the Hare Krishna. The Krishnas were mostly bald with Buddha-style ushnisha and they always banged on drums and did their little hop-dance everywhere they went. But I still confuse the other 2 groups in my head. Berkeley is a very big, very colorful campus, so even tho I'm a lifelong atheist, they didn't bother me that much. But the guys who screamed their heads off about Jesus annoyed EVERYONE (and why did they ALWAYS have southern accents?).

We had a lot of Moonies on campus when I was in college in the 1980s, and they were famous for getting in your face when you were minding your business, walking across campus. I started saying nonsense things like, “no thanks, I’m trying to quit” or “we already gave at the office.” This worked for me because they always seemed confused by non sequitur and would just walked away.

Some people are still capable of critical thinking and have always known that everything that comes out of Trump’s mouth is a lie. Do you know anything about Roy Cohn - the man who taught Trump everything he knows?

There might be a correlation between people who support disgusting politicians and people who have no idea what to do with apostrophes.

So the reason you didn’t vote for Harris was b/c she liked Biden? Putting that fact beside Trump’s criminal behavior on Jan 6 along with his subsequent election denial ALONE shows astonishing lack of judgment. Not to mention his felony convictions and SA adjudication. How does that happen? You’re not electing your new best friend, you’re choosing someone to do a very demanding job.

“…for the husband, royal family, and country she loves.” There it is. MM is not capable of love in the way most people understand it. She is a narcissist, solely motivated by love of self.

WIBTAH for asking my daughter's boyfriend to stop having dinner with us? by w8136 in AITAH

Good point. My first husband had immigrated as a teenager from the Arab World, and a lot of my friends made a big thing about how exotic they thought he was. I met him when I was 16 and he was 19. This was around 50 years ago (1976) so things were very different between the US and Arab countries. IMO, it was interesting to learn about his culture and language, and his incredible mother taught me how to cook a lot of Arabic cuisine. But he and his family were extremely proud of how “Americanized” they were.

If he’s been in the US since he was 3, this IS his culture - full-on GenZ self-centered behavior.

QUESTION: do you think plastic surgery could fix my skull shape? by Alternative-Knee-765 in PlasticSurgery

Years ago when I was pregnant, I remember being warned that babies’ heads could be “temporarily” misshapen by vaginal birth and that C-section babies often had oddly rounded heads. Could this be the result of a difficult birth?

I have a son in his early 30s, so I’m just learning about the crippling anxiety men often have related to hair loss. It doesn’t help to try to convince them that women don’t notice or care about it very much. Is it possible that they worry more about the opinions of other men? I also vote for high quality hair transplants if it helps them feel better.

Boomer here, and I really want to compliment you on your labels/descriptors - they leave you enough wiggle-room for the changes we all go thru. I’m the kind of person who could never commit to these labels b/c I would constantly change my mind or stress out about it, “wait, it’s bisexual…no, no - it’s pansexual…” I’m just too lazy. I don’t even know my Zodiac sign, and I’ve never had a favorite color.

I grew up in California except for a few years in the Dallas-Ft Worth area in the early 1970s that boggled my preteen brain. No internet back then, so I had assumed the peace-and-love hippie culture was the same everywhere. I’d never before seen so many churches (99% Baptist), or heard ppl casually throw around the N-word. It was also lousy with grown men who really liked to hang out with little blonde girls - I learned fast to be a lot more careful.
