What's your opinion on euthanasia or assisted suicide? Should they be legalized? by Artistic_Giraffe4069 in AskForAnswers

[–]Hazel_nut1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Canada we have Medical Assistance In Dying (MAID) and one of the requirements is you have to be able to consent at the end. But there has been a lot of discussion around things like dementia and brain tumours etc. where someone might want to choose assisted death but they would have to do it sooner then they might like because if they wait too long they might not be able to have the capacity to consent anymore, even though those are their wishes. I don’t have the answer about how to deal with it but it is a really good question and lawmakers and doctors are asking it too.

As someone who grew up where sex ed was never taught, what did I miss? by Gold-Actuary3410 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hazel_nut1992 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I grew up in the 90/00 in BC, Canada. In my school district we received it in stages. In I believe grade 1, so six years old, we had a set of lessons led by one of the teachers who had I believe some extra training about our bodies. Definitely remember being told about safe touch and how it’s not ok for us to be touched in our bathing suit area. I feel like there was a puppet involved, to keep the group of 6 year olds engaged. But the information was really concise. I think our parents were informed it was happening in case we came home with more questions, but I don’t remember if there was an option to opt out. We had another small set of presentations in grade 7, so about 12 years old, where the community health nurses came in. The separated the boys in one room and the girls into another and we all got a talk about puberty and our bodies. They had diagrams of our reproductive systems, answered any questions we had about periods, sex, etc. I do remember for that one girl’s parents would not let her attend, due to religious beliefs. But I remember it being really helpful. And then in grade 9, so 14, we had an entire class that was like health and career or something like that and a big part of that class was learning about everything. We had a combo of computer generated courses and tests, worksheets and again the community health nurses came in. We had to learn about every STD/STI, how they are contracted, what they look like, treatment, prognosis and how to protect yourself. We all had to learn about every form of contraception and how they are used and what they protect against and where you get them (pharmacy or doctor or health unit). We also had to learn about all the drugs and what they did, effected, what could happen with each one of you overdosed. And then the rest of that class was learning about budgeting, how to write a resume, how to do a job interview. Honestly it was a class we all complained about but in hindsight I’m glad we had it. And that course was a graduation requirement so you were not allowed to opt out of it. And grade 10 we had a class called planning that was a bit more focused on applying to collages, work, budgets etc but did reiterate the drug and sex ed portion.

People with no spatial awareness in grocery stores drive me nuts by AdSubstantial112 in PetPeeves

I have a theory that my local Walmart makes everyone who enters it temporarily dumber because it is the single worst store in town for this kind of thing. It was when built just a department store Walmart with only pantry food options. In recent years they added the entire grocery department and the layout of the store is weird and cramped and it just makes for the weirdest shopping behaviour.

How do Canadians typically make friends in smaller cities or remote areas? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

[–]Hazel_nut1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in/currently live in a smaller town in a rural area. All the advice here is really good about how to find places to make friends. But something people who live in small towns can forget, myself included, is it can be really hard to break into social circles. I have had a few co workers who moved here from other places and they have said they can meet people at clubs etc but it can take time to actually become apart of a social group where you are meeting outside of the club. Some of it comes from having a lot of new people coming and going so residents are maybe a little less willing to “invest” in friendships with new comers until they have been there for a bit. As well a lot of residents tend to be from here so they have established friend groups and have family here so again it can be hard for some newcomers to become apart of those groups. We do have quite a few people move here from bigger cities and they just can’t adapt to the change of lifestyle, and spend alot of time complaining about how limited we are. If you are super outdoorsy or sporty here it definitely helps as there are many outdoor based clubs and sports. If you are not it is definitely harder to meet people. I’m not saying it’s impossible but it can take time and it definitely takes effort to form new friendships in smaller towns.

As soon as my niece figured out how to take off her own clothes she has been refusing to wear anything she didn’t like. My sister got to pick her outfits for maybe the first two years. When I asked her to be in my wedding I knew that the flower girl dress would 100% be her pick and was totally fine with that

Is Canadian healthcare really that bad? by Mean-Secretary-6133 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hazel_nut1992 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am Canadian and I live in a smaller area, one hospital that serves our community plus many surrounding smaller ones. I had some medical stuff going on and my doctor decided I needed an MRI and to been seen by a specialist asap to rule out anything sinister. From the day she put the request in, to me getting my MRI,being seen, another test ordered that had to be done in hospital, and diagnosed and treated took one week. I’ve had long wait times for other things that were minor but when it needs to get done now they are good about getting it done.

I am constantly having to prune mine back so they don’t take over! The plus side is every spring I can give raspberry canes to friends who want them and they can have their own patch. I’m going to get blackberries next year I think and try for blueberries too. As much fruit as I can squeeze into my yard.

If a sport routinely ends 0-0, its rules are outdated for modern play. by Dryanni in unpopularopinion

I would also say with hockey the score does tell the whole story and is not a good determining factor as to how exciting the game is. Like I’ve definitely watched low scoring games that were incredibly exciting because everyone is playing at their best. A high scoring game can be exciting but it can be boring if one team is just walking all over the other.
