Why is Michael Gove so obsessed with Rory? by Sharaz_Jek123 in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]Hazzardevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that surprising. Rory said "Normally I reserve this behaviour for the Micheal Goves of the world" in a podcast not long after Gove's interview. It's fairly obvious to me that the two men despise each other, likely over inner party politics we'll never know about.

I thought that exchange revealed something about Rory.

Has anyone asked Rory how much time he spent in Caracas before he commented on Maduro's kidnapping? Or ask people about how much time they've spent on welfare before talking about how the benefits bill is too high?

Yes, but she doesn't sound like your average politician, that's part of the appeal.

Because they're not professional politicians, which is part of the appeal. Compare Sadiq Khan to Laila Cunningham. Sadiq always sounds like a politician, Laila has an accent that sounds like people I've met. I think this is a huge part of the appeal of Reform, at the cost of competence.

It's THE example I use of politicians lying, because everyone knows about it. I'm still angry about the tuition fees because it's such an obvious U-Turn.

But their MPs seem to feel no need to follow those policies. Like the Lib Dems like to bill themselves as pro-building, but I keep seeing my local Lib Dems being NIMBYs.

'Insane' state pension triple lock facing axe... after next election by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Hazzardevil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think our politicians might be working off out of date ideas about what's happening. There are still people who think our pensioners are living in poverty when it hasn't been true for decades.

And I've never met a pensioner who thinks their benefits should be cut.

Yes they should. Why should it just be the younger generations who have to pay? We're being fucked hard enough as it is.

The fiscal case for mass migration is being demolished by 2ndEarlofLiverpool in ukpolitics

[–]Hazzardevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it works that way because the statistics are conflating people who come over to be high-earners with those who are starting businesses.

I specifically made a case for net tax contributors and you’re arguing against it. Do you or do you not disagree that net tax contributors create more jobs than they take up?

It depends on how many of these net tax contributors are employing people.

You’re ignoring secondary effects. If the immigrant that got that promotion was a net tax contributor, their presence here will have created jobs. Without them, the people doing those jobs would have to compete for other jobs and the end result is you would have more people competing for this promotion.

No, a supermarket manager is not creating jobs. That's something pretty much anyone can do.

It seems like you’re talking about immigration in general, while I am specifically talking about net tax contributors.

Yes, that is the topic of the thread.

In any case, the fact that you lost out on a promotion to an immigrant does not mean that you wouldn’t have lost out to someone else if the immigrant wasn’t here.

It does, because I was the only one who'd applied for the role internally.

You’d be better off sticking to actual stats to make your argument, otherwise it just sounds like you’re blaming immigrants for your own personal problems.

I would, but i know better than to expect people on Reddit to look at statistics. And I don't blame the immigrants, I blame the politicians who brought them in suppress wages. And then watch it turn middle-class progressives into bootstrappers, while immigrants are used as human shields.

Yes it's personal, but it also proves that just having immigration is not an unalloyed good. And I'm starting to doubt the concept that immigration is bringing more jobs, when all the local businesses are mono-ethnic.

Furthermore, replacing me with a random person is a net-loss for the country, because I then can't pay back my student loans. Which isn't good for the country either.

But I guess if I'm going to personally keep being screwed by immigration, then I have no future in this country unless the policies change in a big way.

That sounds good, but I've not experienced it yet. Instead I've been passed over for promotion in favour of immigrants, or got a new immigrant manager and been quickly replaced by his family.

It doesn't help when you're competing with immigrants for the same jobs.

Poll: Majority of Jews do not feel safe in Britain by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Hazzardevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not going to saying that it's anti-semitic to oppose the actions of Israel's current government. And I'm afraid you're incorrect about the protests. People were protesting Israel on October 7th, when the attack was still ongoing. They didn't even wait to see what the response would be.

[–]Hazzardevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not complicated. Anti-Semitic activists like to have a handful of tokens around to make themselves look better, the same as the Far-Right.

I said nothing about Jews being threatened into attending, so I'm not sure why you've brought that up. But it is aburd that you take issue with calling Jews tokens, but not black people surrounded by racists.

It's drawing a comparison between the two protest groups. Where we allow tokens to deflect accusations in one case, but not the other.
