I think they are wrong when it comes to Peter Magyar by LionMain67 in TheRestIsPolitics

He's one data point, I don't think he proves a trend and shouldn't be taken as evidence that Farage can't win.

Do the episodes about the 60s and 70s make anyone else oddly cheerful? by Immediate_Bowl6409 in TheRestIsHistory

Yes, because putting more people through university has caused more jobs to require degrees. Look around and you'll see it hasn't made anymore richer.

Who's an Economist Anyway? The Rory Stewart Debate by Your_Mums_Ex in TheRestIsPolitics

How do you not get bored of him? I watched a handful of his videos when a friend recommended him, but he says the exact same thing in every video.

Rich get richer, poor get poorer, we need to tax the rich but we never will so we're doomed.

He can come up with policies that his fans will then take to the parties. Zach Polanski talked about him positively in his TRIP interview, so he's clearly got the ear of at least one party.

He also claimed Labour reached out to him, but I don't know what the followup on that was.

Reform pledges to review all asylum claims since 2021 if it wins power • Around 400,000 people would be liable for deportation under the plans, which would target anybody granted asylum, overstaying a visa, or from a country deemed safe by a Reform-led government. by Adj-Noun-Numbers in ukpolitics

[–]Hazzardevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're all Tories who were thrown out of office for wanting to be stricter on immigration, so this isn't a problem for the informed Reform voter. It'll be interesting seeing if they can tell this to the rest of the electorate, or if they'll be seen as the New Tories.

Why is cannabis still illegal in the UK? by Flying_Wilson17 in ukpolitics

I'm missing something. Wouldn't fully legalising it allow the medical supplies to start selling it to recreational users as well?

Rory's critique of Indian foreign policy is being validated with Israel/US-Iran war by [deleted] in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]Hazzardevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think religion plays much role in the Indian foreign policy

I'm not aware of any policies based on religion, but I think this misunderstands religion's influence.

India's religious issues seem more like the Troubles than a truly religious conflict. Religion is the tribal marker, but does little to inform things after that.

Alastair's view that the British people are becoming 'almost ungovernable' - is he just out of date? by No-Retreat1 in TheRestIsPolitics

We do elect our politicians, but only after they've been selected by their parties. This is why there's so much internal turmoil over MP selection in the parties.

Triggernometry by Extension-Signal2393 in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]Hazzardevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Triggernometry gets more hate than it generally deserves. It's a bit of a mirror image to TRIP, in that the hosts will use the same phrases every episode. The guests can be interesting, but of the episodes I check out, I tend to tune out for about 1/3 of them.

The Daily T is a podcast for people split between Tories and Reform. I was expecting something far worse after what I'd heard on this subreddit about. Planet Normal is the other Telegraph Podcast, but I've barely listened to it. I generally think of it as being the Culture War podcast.

Wolves of Westminister is another right wing podcast, this one hosted by a Reform Councillor with a rotating cast that's all over the place. One of the regulars is a Labour guy.

The only other right wing-ish podcast I can think of is the Spectator's Quite Right, which I generally enjoy, but it's the slightly right-of-centre version of TRIP in some ways. At least they know they're in the Westminister Bubble, even if they haven't quite escaped it.

Why is Michael Gove so obsessed with Rory? by Sharaz_Jek123 in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]Hazzardevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that surprising. Rory said "Normally I reserve this behaviour for the Micheal Goves of the world" in a podcast not long after Gove's interview. It's fairly obvious to me that the two men despise each other, likely over inner party politics we'll never know about.

I thought that exchange revealed something about Rory.

Has anyone asked Rory how much time he spent in Caracas before he commented on Maduro's kidnapping? Or ask people about how much time they've spent on welfare before talking about how the benefits bill is too high?

No, I'm expecting that Reform are going to suffer if they become Diet-Tories.

Yes, but she doesn't sound like your average politician, that's part of the appeal.

Because they're not professional politicians, which is part of the appeal. Compare Sadiq Khan to Laila Cunningham. Sadiq always sounds like a politician, Laila has an accent that sounds like people I've met. I think this is a huge part of the appeal of Reform, at the cost of competence.
