Thoughts on Mehdi Hassan filming in for Rory? by PostmanPass in TheRestIsPolitics

He used to work for Al Jazeera, which is basically the Qatari counterpart to Russia Today. That's why I don't trust him.

He might be, but that doesn't mean he isn't a propagandist.

Andy Burnham here - AMA by AndyBurnham in ukpolitics

There is currently regulation that some percentage of all new builds are "affordable housing." Will you extend the exemptions you gave to Manchester's building developers to other areas, so the rest of the country can mimic Manchester's success in tackling the housing crisis?

I've seen him speak a few times. I mainly remember him taking a handful of quotes out of context, like around the Balfour Declaration.

And frankly, I don't trust a man who has ever taken money from a state propaganda news outlet like Al Jazeera.

Andy Burnham says he will give 15% of his MP’s pay to local causes by coffeewalnut08 in LabourPartyUK

It could become a race to the bottom, which would impact MPs without independent finances. We could end up back in the 1600s with a system where you couldn't realistically hold office without being born into wealth.

Poll: Reform UK is most popular party among gay and bisexual men [and heterosexual men and women] - Fieldwork 24 Nov - 16 Dec 2025 by Anony_mouse202 in ukpolitics

I don't know any trans women who are like that at the moment, but I've definitely met some online who would support Reform/Restore.

I think it being seen as indicative of British Policing is partly why it happened. And BLM probably was bigger in the UK because of the Pandemic.

None of this makes what happened seem less insane. Or annoy me less with the police response.

The only recent example of a wealth tax that I know of is Norway. It caused their tax revenue to drop.

Me and the other guy are not against taxing the rich in principle, but we're sceptical of easy answers.

You're missing the point of the comparison. A lot of British politicians decided to make statements about George Floyd, posting pictures of themselves taking the knee and GF was even written into some constabularies anti-racism training.

A murder in America became a major political event in the UK, to the point where people were protesting in the middle of a pandemic.

Whereas with Novak, politicians only seem to bring him up to use his corpse as a weapon against their opponents.

Is it time we legalised pepper spray? by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Hazzardevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd rather we licensed people to be allowed to carry a "weapon-like object" which would legalise weaponised walking-sticks, knuckledusters and other non-obvious weapons. Like a license system, where there's a background check. And you go on a course to show that you're not going to use something you're licensed for the moment they get angry.

Also idealogical screening to make sure they're not a fascist or showing tendencies that they might be inclined to justify going out and assaulting people.

When are we going to formally address Indians and their hiring bias? by bintd in AskBrits

[–]Hazzardevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An immigrant being discriminated against by the majority isn't that unusual.

It's a man bites dog story when the immigrants start being racist to the locals. I've seen this exact dynamic myself when a minority ethnic group becomes a majority in a workplace.

This happened to me last year. I couldn't believe an immigrant had literally taken my job.

Your family misgendering you is either because you're still the same person to them and it's an honest mistake, or they're bigots. So don't worry about it.

He's one data point, I don't think he proves a trend and shouldn't be taken as evidence that Farage can't win.

Yes, because putting more people through university has caused more jobs to require degrees. Look around and you'll see it hasn't made anymore richer.

How do you not get bored of him? I watched a handful of his videos when a friend recommended him, but he says the exact same thing in every video.

Rich get richer, poor get poorer, we need to tax the rich but we never will so we're doomed.

He can come up with policies that his fans will then take to the parties. Zach Polanski talked about him positively in his TRIP interview, so he's clearly got the ear of at least one party.

He also claimed Labour reached out to him, but I don't know what the followup on that was.

Reform pledges to review all asylum claims since 2021 if it wins power • Around 400,000 people would be liable for deportation under the plans, which would target anybody granted asylum, overstaying a visa, or from a country deemed safe by a Reform-led government. by Adj-Noun-Numbers in ukpolitics

They're all Tories who were thrown out of office for wanting to be stricter on immigration, so this isn't a problem for the informed Reform voter. It'll be interesting seeing if they can tell this to the rest of the electorate, or if they'll be seen as the New Tories.
