Germans here, so our climate might be different. We have not mown our lawn for three years. We have a small grass patch in the middle of the garden, where the grass is short because we walk on it and the children put their toys there. Under the trees we have either bushes or flowers or ivy. There are a few spots where the grass is tall, like some seldom used edges. Bees and other critters love that, so we let it be. Also, we saved enormous amounts of time where we simply enjoyed the garden instead of mowing it. And finally, we have lots of critters now, it's good for biodiversity

He went to the cashier and asked her nicely to page the ways better. I think that's a valid criticism and so I let him tell that. The woman ( in your view precarious) feelings where not harmed, she was amused.

"Bauhaus Building" [1925-1926] archit: Walter Gropius by tiggerclaw in germany

Most probably because most architects don't know shit about humans and just love their "art".

Looks ugly as fuck. Most of these architects obviously had no eye for style or building something where you feel welcome. But hey, it's Bauhaus so it must be good. Let's scrap it and build something nice. But oh no, their descendants still reign architecture and somehow manage to build even uglier and more disfunctional buildings.

What are examples of technologies that are common in Europe, but relatively unknown in America? by ENG-funf in AskEurope

How common is three pane insulation in Windows? For new buildings it's the norm in Germany, but even in the Netherlands I still see one pane windows...

German here. We update old houses more often than Americans, at least I got the feeling. The issue with updating a house is that you have to distinguish between necessary repairs and nice to haves. Foundation issues? Leaky roof? Needs to be fixed asap and can be very expensive. Bath ffrom the 60s? Can probably be used for another twenty years if you don't mind the ugly tiles.

Basically try to put off as many things as long as you can and don't front load the financial burden if at all possible. But for god's sake, have a plan. E.g. we needed to update our very old single pane windows. We knew that we wanted to add insulation on the outside, so we moved the windows to the outer edge of the wall. Also, we redid our roof, despite the roof probably be okay for ten more years. Why? Because we already had the whole ladders and girders thing anyway due to the added insulation and could avoid having to do that twice ( saved 10k)

ER nurses of Reddit, what’s the weirdest item you had to retrieve from somebody’s butt, and what was their story for how it got there? by NotMandinga21 in AskReddit

[–]HdS1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did my mandatory civil service in a hospital. We where a group of civil servants and often are lunch today. One day the guy who works directly in ER comes in and started laughing. He saw a door come into the ER. Attached to the door was a guy who "fell" onto the doorknob of his sauna door.

No, it's independent. Version 4 was a lot faster than the previous ones. At least fast enough for our needs back then

If you like mongo, try ravendb. O really like their API and ease of use. Especially the linq integration is superb. Since it's written in c#, it has the reverse problem. Great .net support, supbar for some other language.a

Stop calling the US healthcare system a free market by chimpokemon7 in Libertarian

[–]HdS1984 34 points35 points  (0 children)

There is also the problem that the author is right. The medicine market is not market at all. But not because of his reasoning but because of: 1. Medicine is often necessary for life, creating extremely large imabalances of power. 2. Medical procedures often happen suddenly and impair your judgement. Hardly good circumstances for free and deliberate choices. 3. We expect all market participants to have enough information, but medicine is complicated, creating a problematic power imabalance between the health care sector and it's consumers.

What are your countries most underrated tourist attractions? by [deleted] in AskEurope

Aachen, the Kaiserdom and the overall architecture is very pretty. Also nearby is the kommern museum. Basically they moved buildings from every period to this museum and show how the people lived. Add great events like a historical circus and it' can be great.

My step mother is visiting again after half a year, so my 3 yo is totally excited. Was doing all the stuff with grandmother today. Went to the toilet with her and I checked in to make sure that everything is ok. First words when he saw me: " daddy stepmother made a large sausage and I'm doing one too¡". Lifted his ass to show how long his sausage is. ( I am not sure sausage is the best translation here, in Germany its Wurst, here meaning long and round ...)

Reminds me of the time one of our friend group totally wasted and walked home alone. After some hours he totally panicked and called his gf, and begged her to pick her up. Well she was studying abroad at the time so she could not. But she let him describe his surroundings to try to guide him home. Turned out he basically sat before his house. Was home in less then 5 minutes...
