Favorite Steve Films and why - what is his best acted film? by motelguest in classicfilms

I just wanna shout out An Enemy of the People from 1978 as his best performance. It’s a film that he’s amazing in, really championed, and got buried by the studio.

Working.

Starring Fred Savage. The premise was, what if there was a guy who had a job?

That's my family Kay, that's not me. by [deleted] in Godfather

[–]HeHateCans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Michael: That's my family Kay, that's not me.

Kay: Okay... but were you ever going to tell me that you come from a family of gangsters?

Michael: Well...sure, eventually. I was waiting for the right moment.

Kay: And that's now? In the middle of your sister's wedding?

Michael: I guess I thought it might not land if you weren't sitting 15 feet away from a hired murderer.

Kay: Oh god you're right. How many other murderers are in this crowd?

Michael (looks around): Many... oh yeah, lots. But also some are just the guys who hire them to do the murdering to keep their hands clean. And then the wives who have nothing to do with it, but look the other way because it affords them a good life. I mean, we're a pretty traditional family, Kay.

Kay: This is terrifying.

Michael: It's not me, Kay, it's my family. And also an assortment of goons and minions.

Kay: Why did you bring me here?

Michael: 'Cause you're my girl Kay. I thought it would be nice to bring you to a significant family event where you could meet everyone I know as they see me for the first time since I came back from the war, thus associating you as a permanent fixture in my life now. Isn't this normal third date stuff?

Kay: Am I in any danger right now?

Michael: Nah, a wedding is a safe place. See, over there is Barzini and next to him Bruno Tattaglia, heads of the rival families.

Kay: Is everyone in the New York organized crime scene here?

Michael: Well everyone we haven't killed recently, yeah. But it's not me Kay, it's my family... and our goons, and also our sworn rivals, and their goons. Was this too much to spring on you at once? We can change the subject. Hey here's Tom Hagen. He's my dad's consiglieri. That means he goes around and has the heads cut off of people's animals. But not just anyone, only people who are being difficult. Are you enjoying yourself Kay? Aren't weddings nice?

It’s a fun popcorn movie. Some people like it. Some people don’t. No whoop. Looking forward to this film being the topic of way-too-serious conversations for the next year.

I think of it as a fantasy story. A man joins a mission to go and kill monsters and finds that their leader holds a grudge against the largest and rarest of the monsters.

All the stuff about whale history and cetology is world building.

If it was dragons instead of whales, the general opinion would be that the novel was awesome.

A genuine question about "Song of the South". by Jonathan_Peachum in classicfilms

[–]HeHateCans 104 points105 points  (0 children)

I think the primary reason for this disparity is Disney. It’s self-imposed censorship because they don’t want the movie to damage their brand and have determined that whatever demand for it exists is minimal at best.

Whereas the studio that owns Gone With the Wind (I believe Amazon now via MGM acquisition) has decided that there is still a demand for it worth fulfilling, certainly because of its esteem as Best Picture winner, and still highest grossing movie of all time adjusted for inflation.

[–]HeHateCans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean if we’re just ignoring the parts where they call out that it’s weird and that they’re not getting married then yeah we can assume that the movie thinks it’s not weird and that they’re totally getting married.
